Hello, Dakka. What is your opinion of the Dark Eldar? I personally like them, but feel that they should have WAY more units for Apocalypse. So, dakkanuts, what is your opinion?

Check out the new Forgeworld vehicle. It's like they read your mind.
But I dont really see the Dark Eldar rushing headlong into a major battle. Maybe combining them with other lists as "slaves" might work.

I like the look of them. Plus FW's new vehicle looks pretty rad.

I can't be unbiased about this, I loev me some Dark Eldar.

Dark Eldar don't really function in Apocalypse like any other army. They certainly don't use Titans like the Imperium or even CWE, and the Jetfighters are already in the Codex, so the only thing that fits is that typical 'Take X of Y Heavy Support/HQ/Elites thing in a big unit and get some cool gak to go with it'. The only one I've seen that makes sense is the Ravager Titan Killer formation with 5 or so Ravagers and the ability to disable Void Shields for a turn. The Tantalus is just a really big Raider AFAIK and the Reaper has that lame-ass Haywire Cannon that only puts it on the level with a standard Ravager.

From my experience, anyway, they totally blow ass in Apoc any way you put it. All the weaknesses of the army are magnified exponentially when there's more than 2 people playing or if orbital bombardments fly around, and it's hard to make a really good army when you can max your Troops, Heavy Support, Elites, and HQ in under 3000 points.

They're a flavourful, well-written codex with good balance and many playable builds. Honestly, it and the Ork codex are probably the two best codices overall written so far.

I wouldn't play them myself because they don't fit my style, but they make a great opponent and many of the sculpts are quite excellent.

Until the Tau codex gets rewritten they give me the fast shooty army that I've always wanted.

I love the look of the new jet bikes, venoms, and bombers.

The Dark Eldar are fantastic in my books. They reward my style of play...which is increasingly bold and fast. I would like to see some variety of units for Apoc.

But the 2 times I have played Apoc I teamed up with my IG buddy and we claimed his forces were a combination of my slaves and a unit who was duped into fighting on our side.

Know thy self. Everything follows this.

Unfortunately, DE don't have many units for Apocalypse because when Apocalypse was released, they were the oldest army and debatably the least popular, behind Sisters.

Currently, I think Dark Eldar are an example of GW at its absolute best. Gorgeous models, great fluff, and well balanced rules make them one of my favorite armies in the game. I'm not totally inclined to start an army of them, but I think they're awesome.

Yes, once I am a veteran wargamer, I may start a Dark Eldar army based purely on their looks.

Well, to me, the current DE are the best thing since Leman Russ Executioner Squads with Sliced Bread and Butter on top of them. They have nice rules, a fun and challeging playstyle, beautiful models, amazing fluff and everything about them is just awesome. I do find it quite amusing that one of their best models are also the ones that have the worse rules (I think we know which ones am I talking about) but it's still a great army. It's so great that I'll seriously considering in making them my first physical army. They ARE going to be hard to paint for a beginner like me, so I getter get me some tutors.

Dark Eldar look cool... I played against them awhile ago and while their units come off as devastating, they really didn't do much at all... However, my opponent was pretty weak so that probably plays into the equation much larger than the DEs.

I'd say that has more to do with your opponent than anything. In the back of the book there's a few pages that can basically be summed up as "IF YOU SUCK AT 40k DON'T PLAY DARK ELDAR"

Basically. I've seen people play Dark Eldar like marines then proceeding to rage when they get tabled by turn 3.

Dark eldar were kinda a backfoot army for years, so forgeworld didn't pay much attention to them. They should have more models, but they don't.

Me, I love me some elves, in any setting, whether that's MMOs, D&D, single-player video games, WHFRP, WHFB, Blood Bowl or 40K.

Good Elves? Like 'em.
Evil Elves? Like 'em.

Evil Elves with poor hormonal control and an apparent allergy to clothing? Yep, like 'em.

ive played my dark eldar in many apoc games. i find the trick is to take ALOT of units. so as many raiders, venoms, ravagers as possible, and as many troops as you can fit. the special characters also do decent.

that said, ive also converted a revenant titan (with a second in progress,) im also working on a phantom, and i have 5 fliers. the concept being that these units are holdovers from before the fall (in case of the titans) and its crew have been turned to the DE way of life, or are simply DE piolets in captured titans. and since they are the fastest titan in the game, figured it fits. plus fliers REALLY fit the theme, and work very well in apoc, as not much really works vrs them, and i find at least here not many people expect a flier, let alone 5. again i just use the eldar versions like the nightwing.

in apoc games the DE biggest advantage is speed. especially since apoc games tend to be gigantic blobs of slower moving stuff. take flank march and go second. let your opponent deploy everything and hold off till your 3rd turn. then bring everything on in one spot were they can absoultly crush a vital portion of his army, then work your way out. the idea is to deny him his alpha strike, and get him to commit to a particular area of the board. once that happens you know exactly where to deploy, what to hit, and can focus your entire force on a small aspect of his. (plus if he has flank march it forces him to use it before you do).

in normal games i think they are simply awsome. great fluff, great rules that make sense with the fluff, and awsome models that again follow true to the codex both in rules and fluff.

Right behind you...

Well, they have very cool models, especially HQ units, nice fluff, and a well written Codex overall. Personally I don't like Dark Eldar that much (being the psychotic masochists they are) but I think that GW has done a great job with them.

And, of course, the major plus about them is that the Codex is written by someone else than Matt Ward

There is only the Emperor, and he is our shield and protector.

I think that the problem with the DE is that they're fluff (which I kinda think GW is playing by) doesn't allow them to be an Apocalypse army. They're supposed to open the portal, raid, go back into the portal.

I have been a DE player since they can out, they went a long time without any support but finally got the codex they deserve. Right now DE and Orks are the best codexes out there.

You missed the important word 'xenos' between 'best' and 'codices'.

Silliness aside, I really like Dark Eldar. A good sign of a balanced codex is when pretty much everything in the book has some kind of utility, and with a few notable exceptions (Kherudaruk or whatever he's called, and the Dias) the book pulls it off. It helps that the model range is gorgeous as well

Usually, but not always. They actually have fleets and have engaged in large-scale, relatively long-term warfare, like the fluff examples of Lady Malys' quest and Urien Rakarth and the Tau show.

But yeah, they could use a bigger, apoc-built Talos, a formation for whole flights of Scourges and maybe a jagged, massive assault gunship.

In Boxing matches, you actually get paid to take a dive and make the other guy look good.

In Warhammer 40K, you're expected to pay cash out of your pocket for the privilege of having Marines and IG trample all over your Xenos/Chaos.

That has less to do with Mat Ward's quality of writing and more to do with how awesome Phil Kelly is.

I don't think so. The new codex paints Commorragh as a truly massive, sprawling city expanding on every axis possible. That's a lot of potential living space. Don't forget that many DE are now tube-born and can be grown fairly quickly, and that elders rarely truly die, owing to the Haemonculus' 'talents'.

I love Dark Eldar, every bit about them. Unfortunately I have picked them as my first army, so expect a lot of losses coming my way at the beginning of the game, but I really don't care. Their models got me into 40k and I've lost count of the times I have read the fluff part of the codex. Some people think they're shallow (as in the fluff, not the race themselves), but I just say you need to look deeper into the damnation of the elves and the reason that they are where they are.
