I’ve been asked to demo a game of Warmachine Unbound (150 points and 3 Casters) at my LGS for their winter open day this December. It’ll be my Cryx vs Menoth

I’ve not played any games big enough for unbound rules you might wonder why they’d get me to demo it but no one has any experience of it, it’s just I’m one of the only players with a large enough army/paints fast enough to get that much ready.

So aside from cramming to get some more of my Cryx painted can anyone tell me what to expect? I’m guessing it’ll take a while to finish which is kind of the point l suppose so people can see it.

How do these games work? 150 points is a lot to keep track of, I only know a little about Unbound. I know each caster activates their battle group separately but how does it work with solos and units?

The store will be giving me a set of the rules before we do it, but haven’t yet. Where can you get the rules now anyway? I missed the mag with the rules in.

We love what we love. Reason does not enter into it. In many ways, unwise love is the truest love. Anyone can love a thing because. That's as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.

Blugh. This is like getting together twenty guys who play poker to demo a 2v2 x5 bridge tournament with swiss pairings.

Each 'round' has 6 different player 'turns'; on each turn, a player will activate a battlegroup and a certain amount of infantry and solos. When all battlegroups (3 each) have activated, then the 'round' is up and the game proceeds to the next round, rinse and repeat.

The battlegroup that a player activated last in the previous round cannot be activated first in the next round. If you played Terminus, Skarre, and Gaspy, then in the next round you would have to play Skarre or Gaspy first, then could play Terminus again.

Each round, initiative is re-rolled to see who gets to go first. Modifiers based on table quarters and objectives held can add to your initiative roll.

Battlegroups all have to be activated simultaneously, but the other units/solos in the 'list' do not have to activate with the battlegroup. A unit of Bane Thralls taken with Skarre's 'list' could activate the same round you activate Terminus' battlegroup, for example. A unit/solo is still limited to one activation per round, however.

All of these rules are detailed in a certain NQ issue (I think the one with the storm strider on it) and somebody at the store should have it if you're supposed to play this game.

The rules are in three separate issues, with a lot of errata involving turn sequence, mostly.

Each turn, you activate a battlegroup and some units and solos (with marshaled jacks).

Frankly, if you're trying to demo something, you should have played it at least a couple times before hand. I know that if I saw two people stumbling around for six hours trying to play 2 1/2 turns, it wouldn't get me interested.

One thing I keep seeing about it: Go Jack/Beast heavy.

Yes, you have more room. Yes, you have 150 points to spend. But TONS of infantry clog the board and turn the game into a slow quagmire. Too many units/solos and you'll be blocking your own avenues to set up important charges and LoS for range and spells.

Also, don't expect your usual combos to work as they usually do.

We will not be "stumbling round" as you so kindly put it, the fact that I've asked about it here and am researching it several weeks in advance (did you not spot it was not until December) should show that I'm taking it seriously and obviously we will be trialling it before the actual day, I'm not stupid. We know the warmachine rules very well we're not starting from nothing.

The primary goal is to introduce people to Warmachine, last time year what we tried was a 50 point game which was ok but didn't really last long enough.
We are not really trying to get people into Unbound but if existing players are interested that'll be nice but, I'm sure many would agree it's not something most players have the capacity for.

I'm hoping 300+ points of fully painted minitures is going to look exciting and poke peoples interest and hopefully get them to dip their toe in and maybe get start a small army.

Thanks for the info from everyone though, I'm not really worried about competitiveness just having a game that flows well. I may try and cut back on the troops a bit, at the moment its 38 warrior types 11 solos and 14 jacks don't know what my opponent will be doing. Probably jack heavy knowing him
