So, my store is setting up its league/tourney schedule for next year. A lot of the players there have shown interest in Malifaux, to the point where they've asked for a slow grow league. Since I'm our unofficial Wyrd guy (I own models, and have played a game or two), They asked if I would be willing to run it. I (without thinking) said yes lol. I've never ran a league, much less any gaming event. Usually I just play, and haul terrain where needed. So, I'm currently writing up the rules for the campaign, I want it to be more story based, but be open enough to allow people to play multiple games of Malifaux in a day. I'll be designing missions, etc.. as I go along, but here is the first draft. Please tell me what you think, even if you don't play Malifaux, but have experience running events, I would love to hear your wisdom.

C&C is greatly appreciated.

Thanks! I've looked over the gaining ground stuff before, but its not exactly where I want to go with the league. But, it's saved on my flash drive, so I know where to get it when I want it (I'll probably run a tournament or something after the league)

Ok having read your doc and running a simple league at the moment, the one Losing ability which shouldnt be allowed is the allowing ss to modify damage. You can't do this normally in a game so you shouldnt allow it in your league - having special ss that anyone can use is a good perk to give out, but i think normal ss rules should apply to their usage.

You state that players have to pick a Master and stick with it, which is aboslutely fine (its the same in my league) but from the way you word the Winning streak ability, are you saying players have to stick to the same list each week until they win 2 games in a row?? Thats quite a harsh rule, if thats what you are implying. Malifaux is an objective based game, and forces should always be tailored to meet the mission objective! So I think clarity is needed here.

Why does a loss only earn 1 point less than a win, and has exactly the same points as a draw?

You mention faction goals in each week of the campaign, have you given any thought as to what these are, as without this, its somewhat difficult to work out what you want the players to do. So there is one set scenario everyone must play, and then team scenarioes which can be done multiple times?

I know this must read as a very critcial post, but I do want to help! I love playing Malifaux and always demo'ing games at my FLGS

If you drop over to darksphere.co.uk forums, we've got a league going that's moving on well, but small scale really; only 8 or so players

I have to say I don't agree with sticking to one master; Malifaux is balanced around playing a faction, and picking suitable models/leaders for the strategy in question; if you're increasing soulstone value some masters would fall off the page a bit too (hell, I'd hate to touch Gremlins without having Ophelia at the front at low games, and Som'er at high games)

Currently you cannot modify damage flips because (and here is my reasoning behind it) is that the "Fate is smiling on me" special rule is defensive. And while you cannot use them to heal or prevent wounds, it does allow you to cheat in any other duel, whether its combat, spell, willpower, etc... Playing Rasputina, I would love the ability to have free soulstones that I can use to modify my damage flips. My thought was that Fate is allowing you to live via good defense. I'll probably play test this over the next two months (League starts in March).

From my documet wrote:This ability grants you the use of two special soulstones. These soulstones may be used to cheat any duel during a game. It may not be used to modify damage flips, heal wounds, or prevent wounds.

KoganStyle wrote:You can't do this normally in a game so you shouldnt allow it in your league - having special ss that anyone can use is a good perk to give out, but i think normal ss rules should apply to their usage.

I guess I'm a little confused here. You're saying I shouldn't allow it to modify damage (which it can't, but thats okay) and in the normal rules, you may cheat a damage flip if there are no negative flips applied to the damage flip. I'm chalking this up to a slight misunderstanding. From my quote above, you cannot modify any damage flips with the "Fate is smiling on me" rule.

I've clarified this: You may change your list week by week, unless you're on a winning streak, then you may change it every game. Missions will be drawn up before hand (i've got mission 1 almost done).

KoganStyle wrote:Why does a loss only earn 1 point less than a win, and has exactly the same points as a draw?

I'll be honest, I took the win loss thing from Privateer's Journeyman League, which worked well in that league. But we never had any draws, so I'm still figuring them out. Originally, in my mind, it is being used to generate competition, that way people will play for the win, instead of just trying to kill their opponent's master

I just re-read that part. Every week there will be two missions (maybe some weeks have a team game). The first mission is that week's "team" mission. You must play that mission once (as it advances the campaign), but you can play it as many times as you want... But it MUST be against someone of the opposite side (so Guild and Outcasts vs. Arcanists, Resurrectionists, and Neverborn). Since I don't want to limit people from just playing against the other "team," there is one mission where they can play anyone, regardless of faction.

Spoiler:
Clarified to read this way: Campaign Rounds
Each campaign round will last one week. During that time, there will be 2 missions to play, 1 basic scenario and 1 team scenario, which count for your side’s goal for that week.

Basic Scenario: This is a basic game, often with shared strategies and schemes. You may play these games against anyone in the league.

Team Scenario: This game is a special mission that advances the storyline of the campaign. The scenario will generally be a shared strategy, but allow players to pick their own schemes. This mission must be played against a member of the opposing team, and must be played once during that round.

Note on Rounds: Players must play the team scenario at least once, but are not required to play the basic scenario for that week. So a player can earn all of their points from just playing the Team Scenario, as long as they follow the normal rules of who they can and cannot play (see above).
1) Campaign Rounds will begin every Sunday, starting March 4th.
2) There will be a total of 6 (six) rounds, making the campaign last 6 (six) weeks.
3) The seventh week will be a one day team game

Critical? You didn't tell me the feth off. This is exactly the help I'm looking for. Either making me reason out why I did something in the rules, or force me to change or clarify them.

I agree that there is balance amongst factions, but this a beginner's league. I don't expect my players to buy more than a starter box and a few models to round them up to 35 soulstones. I know some of them already have multiple masters for The Guild or The Outcasts (and everyone has Lady J lol). So I want them to play in this league to get good with a caster that they like (or in my case from the Warmachine Journeyman League, get good with a caster I hated).

Thanks guys, Week 1's missions should be up soon.

Ahhh I see the not now lol! Then yes chalk up all I said about soulstones not being about to modify damage as a misunderstanding!

Well if players can see the team mission a week in adavance, then they can tailor there forces to that scenario (and start the arms race) so there shouldnt be too much grief about unsuitable lists (despite the valid point about some masters not excelling at low level games)

Have you thought about any fluff to tie the story together? Would love to see some.

Yeah, the problem is I'm very new to Malifaux myself (I've only played about a handful of games), but I have more experience and I'm always pushing the game at my flgs, so I'm our unofficial henchman lol.

Sadly I know very broad things about the fluff, so specifics are something I need to learn.

But here is the overall story-line of the campaign.

The Neverborn are seeking to reclaim Malifaux from the Guild, they've enlisted some help from sorcerers and necromancers, and are slowly making a concentrated effort to take back the city, and force the earthers out of the city. The Guild can't let this happen. They, as an organization, have too much at stake, should the city fall. So they're sending out their best enforcers to stop the Neverborn's plans from coming to fruition. While initially able to catch the Guild off guard, The Neverborn are quickly facing an even amount of resistance as the Guild reacts to their direct presence around the city.

From there, things will be decided on a week by week basis. The first week's team scenario takes place in a mine with a soulstone vein. In an attempt to muster their strength, each team is trying to gather resources. Week two will probably be a protect the prisoner sort of mission, and I'm not sure where to go next, but like I've said, I've got months to work this out.

Week 7 will feature a 35ss team game. Where you and a partner face off against two other players, and it will probably be done on lots and lots of terraclips (or at least the most we can muster lol). So it should prove to be really fun

Sounds a good starting point! prob go for a shared Treasure hunt to represent the prize, then I thought which ever side won could do a supply wagon mission the week after. After all, getting the loot is one thing, getting back to the base alive is quite another

Just a thought, will you be collating team scenario scores to determine an overall winning side for that week?

Yes, I was determining how I might show this... I'm thinking of adding a map to show progress, but not run a map campaign...

Well if its story - based would writing a paragraph on each week work. If there were some highlights from some battles, weave them into the story. Thankfully, as there are only 2 sides, your only going to need 2 versions to draft roughly (and even they could be very similar) and simply stick the correct piece into the story that week and tidy up the intro so it follows on from the previous.

Obviousily it helps if the scenarioes planned are linked well so that the story can flow easily eg:

Shared treasure hunt > Supply Wagon > Distract (making the opponent think your doing one thing, and really doing another) > Deliver the Message (War is coming!) > Slaughter?

I havent thought of what the losers strategies would be to counteract those.

Sorry for my silence everyone, its been busy dealing with school, among other things.

Here is version like 1.2 or something like that lol

I've got week 1 and week 2 scenarios done. Week 3 will probably be somewhere along the lines of like attacking a supply wagon (and will be a Special Team Mission).

Let me know what you think!
