Kotaku wrote:Rumor spreading fast via Twitter on Sunday holds that THQ has canceled its entire 2014 slate of releases to position the company for sale.

Kevin Dent, a games industry veteran, tweeted late yesterday that THQ had canceled an MMO it was developing under license from The Games Workshop, meaning Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millenium Online (pictured above). Dent went on to say that the publisher had also canceled all projects due for release in 2014 and was in the process of returning intellectual property to their licensors.

Rumor is spreading fast. It says it right there. Wait for an official statement from THQ before jumping on board with what this guy says.

Ups, I've enjoyed some THQ games, so I'm sorry they are going to sell the company.

About the MMO... I never liked how it looks. I know it was on early stages, but it didn't convinced me, so maybe door is open to another company to do a better job (always IMO).

Why did THQ's share price drop from 6 dollars to 66 cents over the course of a year?

Homefront dropped their stocks down 26% alone. Red Faction: Armageddon was a flop as well. Space Marine sold alright from what I can tell, but not amazingly well.

Hmm, it does explain why Relic made mention of not doing a Space Marine sequel a while ago. If THQ releases the 40k IP then Relic can't use it either.

Hah! At least we'll be spared an undignified failure of a MMO, set against the likes of SWTOR and WoW

The head of THQ, if I recall correctly, said there wouldn't be one in the future because it would compete with Dark Milennium for sales. Two Space Marine-centric games in the same universe being released around the same time wouldn't be good for business.

WoW has been circling the drain for a while now. Also how is a game we haven't even played, let alone seen finished gameplay of, guaranteed to be a failure?

Assuming all this is true?

Unless another publisher can acquire both Relic and the 40K license, no. It's not gonna happen.

On the plus side, we may see Homeworld 3 sooner rather than later.

Sucks for everyone waiting for the 40K MMO, but I think it's good for the hobby in the long run; gamers will spend more time at the table and less at the PC.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

I've never heard of anyone spending less time playing 40K because of Dawn of War/Space Marine, and conversely, I've never met anyone who picked up the tabletop game because of the video games.

Excepting that SWTOR was a boring wow-like game with added lightsabers and alot of voice acting, yes.

I collect:

Hmm, be interesting if THQ did go under. Strange though, it seems so sudden

This may be more appropriate for the video game forum but imo MMO's is just a way for a company to shoot itself in the foot. These days its really hard for MMOs to do well aside from the first few months of "new car smell"

So many recent MMOs just fall flat on their face and end up a sinking ship. Maybe I have a skewed view so feel free to correct me but after watching WAR, Star Trek, DC Universe, Lego Universe, and numerous others fade into obscurity/movetowards F2P, I just dont see much hope

A lot of people have picked up tabletop 40k from the DoW games. I regularly see people post in the introduction section talking about how that's what got them started with 40k, and a few personal friends of mine got back into the game because of DoW. I know it's what turned my casual interest into the timesink obsession it is now.

So does this mean the BT will not be released then or it will now? Will they wait and hold off BT just in case the MMO comes back in another form or from another company?

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

Thinking there was any correlation between the two is/was wishful thinking.

Space Marine exceeded their sales expectations, selling/shipping (can't remember which) over a million copies on all platforms combined. That's not enough to save a publisher singlehandedly though. Sucks about the MMO if true. Between SWTOR and the 40k MMO, I was expecting one of them to make me take the MMO plunge for the first time. SWTOR seemed too much like WOW from the mechanics to draw me in, leaving only Dark Millenium.

Well, I'm kind of conflicted about this one. Personally, I couldn't care less about MMOs, but I know a couple of people who were really looking forward to this, so I'm disappointed for their sake.

"I have concluded through careful empirical analysis and much thought that somebody is looking out for me, keeping track of what I think about things, forgiving me when I do less than I ought, giving me strength to shoot for more than I think I am capable of. I believe they know everything that I do and think, and they still love me. And I’ve concluded, after careful consideration, that this person keeping score is me." -Adam Savage

I find it bizarre that the company could tank that hard and that fast due to a few games that lagged behind. Did they have no backup line of credit or capitol? If this is true then I'm sad, I had been looking forward to that game.

Modern video games are ludicrously expensive to make, one significant failure can put a company back hugely.

THQ was not a small production house though. They had over a billion in revenue in 2007. It should take more then a few games slumping to bring them down this hard and fast.

There's no proof in your statement about WoW. Your personal opinion? Ok, but no proof.

As for the 40kMMO, yea, this thing has been dead for a long time. How do we know this? NO MARKETING, no new screenshots, no interviews, no news of any kind about it since their HUGE splash at E3. Game companies advertise their projects to keep up interest. Notice how Vigil (makers to the 40k mmo) is putting out lots of new information about Darksiders 2, yet... nothing about the MMO? There's a reason: the mmo is doing horrible.

And now it seems to be dead.
