So, had a friendly 2vs2 game this weekend and I played with a handful of forgeworld units that I have picked up of late. With the new doom of Mymeara book out and it's rules for 40k games, I have a dream that some of these units may become truly available in the next codex. I will be trying them again in another game here before too long with some list tweaks, but I liked how they performed even though they did have to struggle/take advantage of 5 turns of night fighting. Imotekh and a chronomo thingy strikes again.
So the Nightwing: First off with the new rules I love the points reduction. They cut it nearly in half to bring it closer to a razorwings cost, and I think this makes it much more functional. I would love to see weapon options much like serpents and falcons though so you could customize your air craft for specific roles. I rarely found myself using it to attack troops until the bright lances were destroyed. I think the next time around I will spend more time shooting troops with it and less time taking on main battle tanks. It's kill total included a single wound on an obliterator squad, and a shaken result on a piranha. It did attract a lot of melta fire though, so that was a positive I guess.
The Hornet: I don't think my opponents truly paid a lot of attention to the hornet. With two pulse lasers I was able to destroy a piranha, two crisis suits (double tapped) and shook a hammerhead. With armor 11 it seemed like my opponents never put truly heavy fire on it, and just kind of hoped that gun drones and light weapons fire would take it out. The result was I never needed the holo fields since I was never even glanced.
Shadow Spectres: I get them for one more game, initially the opponents thought they were totally over powered. Then again they never shot at them. Obliterators got set right next to them and chose to take out a doomsday ark instead of targeting them. My spectres with Irillyth happily turned around and wasted all of them, then charged into close combat and slaughtered the last of them. Also in their kill total was 6 shaken results on piranhas, destroyed one rhino, and one hammerhead. Long range was never truly able to fully functional since the nightfighting was in effect, gave me a couple of opportunities to use them without the link, and they did pretty well. Six penetrating hits on the piranhas were great, if only I could have rolled better then a 2. I did lose two of them to a vehicle explosion, ironically caused by the hornet. I loved that they were in a fast attack slot and enjoyed the figures on the table immensely, but I'm not sure it was worth the 400 points sink in a 1500 point list. They just about broke even, and I think the next game they will be wiped out quickly since my opponents fear them.
I'll expand upon this when I have the chance to play them again.
