I've been enjoying this game too! I've found translating the Heroclix abilities into Treknobable a bit of a headache, though.

I picked up Fleet Captains as well. Both are by Heroclix. Fleet Captains is for exploring with some combat while Tactics is pure combat. Anyhoo, I'm very much enjoying both. Here's picks of my fleets. I've added in a few Micromachines too.

I've been Star Trek crazy for the past week!

Star Wars Starship Battles was done by Wizards of the Coast (WotC), the same company that did Star Wars Miniatures.

The two new Star Trek starships games, Fleet Captains and Tactics, are both by Heroclix, a brand put out by Wizkids (not WotC) , now a subsidary of NECA. It's an entirely different company.

I tempt you only because they are both very solid games.

This seems pricey, even for Clix. One ship per booster means you're going to be shopping for a while...

It's no more expensive than any other minis game. For about $100 you can get the four ship starter plus a case of twelve boosters and that will give you 16 starships, half Federation and half Klingon, and that's all you really need to start playing - in fact, that will get you half the entire introductory set of 33 ships! A hundred bucks is pretty cheap to instantly buy half the complete set of a game! Just those 16 ships will be all you need to play competively and have a great time. When you want to get more ships you can when you feel you can afford it.

You have no guarantee of getting half and half, let alone pulling more than a couple of the rares depending on the case (assuming the vendor ships/sells the whole case sealed and not 12 random boosters). Following the Clix formula, the commons will suck, the uncommons will be ok, and the rares will be what you need to be competitive. This doesn't take into account dups that you will likely pull as well out of that case.

$100 will go pretty far with most skirmish type games...

How does the game play? I'm a sucker for starship combat, and might get into this game against my better judgement. But does it play well?

It uses the exact Heroclix rules that have been in use for many years now and are a proven game system. The Star Trek Tactics Starter set actually comes with these two exact rules resources that you can print off for free, the 2011 Heroclix Rulebook and the 2011 Heroclix Powers and Abilities Card (PAC):

http://wizkidsgames.com/v3/products/heroclix/downloads/2011HeroClixCoreRulebook.pdf

http://wizkidsgames.com/v3/products/heroclix/downloads/2011HeroClixPAC.pdf

It is a system designed for superhero combat but actually works just as well with starships. Klingon ships use Stealth for Cloak and large starships use Invulnerability and Impervious to represent their powerful shields. It doesn't exactly translate perfectly into Star Trek but it is a very proven game system. Check out the Heroclix Realms fan website - they have over 117 000 members with over 3500 online at any time! Check the bottom of the forum below to see for yourself:

http://hcrealms.com/forum/

Heroclix tried adapting games before to better suit a genre, like Horrorclix, but those systems, despite their improvements just didn't jive well with the already established fanbase, so they stuck with the standard rules. If you want to try before you buy, check out all the Star Trek starship stats here, read the rules I provided the sites for, set out any grid map, and throw down some paper counters of starships and have a few games for yourself:

http://hcrealms.com/index.php?page=units

Or, here's a few stat cards for you here to look off of:

Like I said, download the rules and try it for yourself with paper counters if you want to first. I'll try to post some batreps this Saturday.

This game is really starting to take off in my neck of the woods. My FLGS is selling the boosters like hotcakes. In fact, they're hosting a tourney later on this month.

The problem I'm running into, though, is the people who keep buying these up and playing are very reclusive, playing in cliques (or should I say "clix"?) in their own homes, so its hard for me to hone my skills and get good at it, and I REALLY want to. I was a bigtime Trekker in my younger years, and this brings back a feeling of nostalgia.

Also, I'm new to Heroclix in general, so even more so I need to find some casual games to better acquaint myself with the system And break it, and piss everyone off.

From my group's experience, you won't get half Fed and half Klingon. Its an even distribution of ship types, and there are about three times as many Fed ships as Kingons, so you will wind up with the Klingons being outnumbered 3 to 1.

CHAOS! PANIC! DISORDER!

How did the minis look when you got them...any of them bent out of shape or distorted?

As much as I hate the lack of scaling between the ships...Im still very tempted to get the set.

Whats my game?

There was some minor bending on the starter pack I got, but only on the Enterprise. And since it is so thin in almost every dimension (especially the nacelle pylons) I'm not surprised.

Scaling wouldn't work so well. The Defiant and a Klingon Bird of Prey would be friggin' tiny to the Enterprise-E.

On top of that you can buy the exact ships you want from ebay. So far they arent terribly expensive for the most part.

Ok Ive got a question...are the ships in the Fleet Cpt game compatible with the Tactics game? I mean the clix dials, can the different sets be used together?

No, they are not compatible. The two dozen ships that come with Fleet Captains have dials based on entirely different system that plays extremely differently from Tactics. I have both and very much enjoy both but they cannot be played together.

So, just wondering... Does anyone know where on earth I can grab these in the UK? Not seeming to turn up much luck. The odd site with the starter and individual boosters, but few places to buy bricks of the boosters, let alone physical retail stores around london.

The Starship Battle SWM game was terrible all the way around. I just picked up the starter and a couple of boosters for this Trek Clixs game, first clix fig's I've bought in 6 or 7 years, and so far it has been solid. THe starter set is well balanced and fun and it gives you two ships you want right a way (Enterprise and Bird of Prey) and a couple of other fluffy ships.

If not for the mediocre who would be great, and thank goodness for those who are just terrible they make even those who are mediocre look great

May the Sons of Dorn forever be vigilant
