Setting
Clash of the Titans is a yearly tournament in Sydney Australia. There is no score component for how competitive your list is, so its regarded as the place to max out your codex in a competitive environment. This year points available were 1850 with six games variously table quarters, objective and kill points.

My List
I chose a list that was themed around organic elements to a Space Marine rifle company, in my case second company Aurora chapter. I wanted no ‘chapter’ assets, whether librarian, first company veterans or armoured elements that would come from the chapter pool, such as speeders, vindicators or raiders. As such this list was certainly not optimised and one many would regard with near contempt. Given the nature of this tournament, if this list held its own, then I figured I had a right to say the humble Tactical Marine, even though he constantly forgets his chainsword, is certainly solid and reliable. We will see.

Captain with Relic Blade, Plasma Pistol
10 Tactical Marines with Combiplasma, Powerfist, Plasmagun, Lascannon
10 Tactical Marines with Combimelta, Powerfist, Meltagun, Lascannon in rhino with dozer blade and Hunter Killer missile
10 Tactical Marines with Combimelta, Powerfist, Meltagun, Lascannon in rhino with dozer blade and Hunter Killer missile
10 Tactical Marines with Power Axe and Plasma Pistol, Meltagun, Lascannon in Razorback with Twinlinked Heavy Bolters
10 Tactical Marines with Combiflamer, Powerfist, Flamer, Lascannon in rhino with dozer blade and Hunter Killer missile
8 Devastators with 4 Plasma Cannons
7 Devastators with 4 Missile Launchers

His List
Wolf Lord in Terminator Armour, Storm Shield, Frost Weapon, Wolftooth Necklace
Rune priest with living lightning and murderous hurricane
5 Wolf guard, 1 in power armour with combimelta and fist, 4 with terminator amour, wolf claw and storm shield
5 Scouts with Meltabombs and a meltagun
9 Grey hunters with wolf standard and meltagun in rhino
10 Grey hunters with wolf standard and 2 meltaguns in rhino
6 Grey hunters in razorback
3 Thunderwolf cavalry with 3 stormshields and a powerfist
Land raider
6 Long Fangs with 5 missile launchers

Mission – Table Quarters (primary), Objectives (secondary) and Kill Points (tertiary)
Primary parameter was worth the most total battle points and determined the winner.

Deployment - Spearhead

Opponent won the roll off and chose a table quarter with lots of terrain, deploying everything except scouts.
I deploy in two defensive lines.

Turn 1
He surges everything forward.
In shooting his long fangs try for my razorback but are out of range.

I move my rhinos up and all three smoke.
In shooting I hit the thunderwolves with everything, but don’t get through those saves.

Turn 2
His rhinos move about a bit but hold back, the rune priest dismounts alone. The wolves move up aggressively.
His long fangs hit my razorback but do nothing.
The wolves just miss their charge! This was an important turning point in the battle.

I move my right rhino and razorback around to my forward left defensive line.
My plasma squad (combiplasma/plasmagun) unload on the wolves – the combiplasma/power fist SGT gets an overheat but makes his armour save. The squad puts 2 plasma and 4 bolter wounds on the wolves, my opponent has some bad dice and loses the power fist and both remaining wolves lose a wound.
My plasma cannons open up on the wolves, both wounds saved.
A lascannon hit bounces off the wolves.
4 krak missiles bounce off wolves.
A HK missile bounces off wolves.
A meltagun squad’s small arms bounces off wolves.
My razorback brings one down.
A lascannon misses wolves.
A Rhino lines up the last thunderwolf and hits it with a HK missile, killing the last one.
Yes it took my whole army firing everything to bring down 3 TWC with storm shields.

Turn 3
His land raider surges forward over the chain wire fence and unloads terminators just past where the thunderwolves went down. His rhinos continue to hang back.
His shooting does nothing.
Terminators assault my plasma squad. The wolf lord kills 2, the wolf claws hit 9 times and kill 4. My tacs hit back for 1 wound and my powerfist puts a wound on the wolf lord (eternal warrior means he battles on).
I choose to fail LD and fall back (no sweeping advance) and the terms consolidate into my defensive line.

I unload all nearby vehicles near the SW terminators.
My combiflamer/flamer squad puts 6 wounds on the terms, resulting in the wolf lord taking a second wound.
A combimelta/melta squad unload into the terms, killing 2 wolf guard and the lord.
My Captain with PW/PP and meltagun combat squad unload on the terminators with 2 plasma pistols, a meltagun and 3 bolters, killing another terminator.
4 krak missiles cause 3 wounds, all saved by TDA.
A tactical squad causes 2 bolter wounds, both saved.
Storm bolter bounces off.
Heavy bolter bounces off.
My lascannon combat squad hits the terminator and finally puts him down.
The last tactical squad fires melta/combimelta at the land raider from 4’ away and both miss!
Yes, it took my whole army shooting just about everything I had to put down the wolf guard in terminator armour and the wolf lord.

Having said that, due to him feeding me combat elements piece by piece, I have killed his assault elements and lost only 6 marines.

Turn 4
Wolf scouts come in next to my devastators, shoot 2 dead then assault. They deal 4 wounds for 1 dead, I give back 1 wound which scout armour fails to save. His powerfist then kills 2 more, I pass LD.
His land raider kills 2 marines and rips a storm bolter off a rhino.

I explode one of his rhinos with a meltagun putting 6 wounds on grey hunters but all pass.
My plasma cannons put 14 wounds on the grey hunter squad, but because they in their rhino-created crater, only 5 die.
My lascannon gets a glance and his LR cannot shoot turn 5.
I try and charge a squad into cover to support my devastators – I roll snakes eyes and give up that plan.
His scouts cause 2 wounds, which I save, my guys cause no wounds, the SGT PF misses.

Turn 5
His LR uses POMS to fire a TLLC, hits a rhino and immobilises it.
He meltaguns a rhino on my right flank, exploding it and causing 5 wounds, one dies in each of my squad and his in the resulting explosion.
His rune priest living lightnings my squd causing 5 wounds, which I save 3 using cover saves.
His razor causes a wound but I save.
His long fangs split fire, putting 2 krak rounds into my razor for a glance and a pen, both of which I save with cover. The others frag one of my marine squads, putting 9 wounds for 3 casualties.
In assault his scouts cause 2 hits, which I save. I give one back, saved. His fist kills one, I pass LD.

We ran out of time here so I just moved a squad away from the devastators onto an objective. I had 3 table quarters vs his 1.

Concluding remarks
Feeding me thunderwolves then terminators, into my defensive position, was great. Had those elements arrived together, supported by grey hunters, it would have been very different. Equally had his charge with wolves been better, its entirely possible the battle would have taken a very different path.
As it was he played my game the whole match.

The tacs performed well here. Massed fire proved effective (eventually) although both my positioning and my opponent had to be right for this to work. Throughout most of the game my transports were fine because his long fangs were so far away or obscured.

Game 1 of 6 – emphatic victory to Space Marines.

I have pictures and will post them shortly.

Good report. I'm interested to see how your straight Tac Marine idea plays out against different army types. Clearly your biggest concern is somebody getting into CC with you but you're definately packing a lot of heat with a nice variety to boot so that will help at least stall or weaken a lot of the MSU type armies with weaker armor saves.

Careful for that BA or GK assault though. They can almost guarantee CC by Turn 2 and I'd say their charges are more dangerous than SW.

Heh thanks Kellhus, I met GK in battle 6 on Sunday and without spoiling that batrep I agree their charges can be brutal.

There was a lot of interest from other players around my list, when you see the photos it will show you a lot of green! One guy described it as 'horde marines' although I would not go that far.

Yes the fists do bring some heat, they were more there to give me something I could thump a shooty army with if I had to than seriously resist a CC army.

Still this list, for all its perceived weaknesses, did ok.

Appreciate the comment, will post more shortly.

The report would be much better if the pictures where intermixed with the text to help tell the story IMO.

Really love the picture of his termies surrounded by green marines. Bolters work well with those numbers

Actually not really surprised you beat the Wolves, their list was pretty mediocre. I imagine it would be fun for casual play, but not so much in a competitive environment.

Not to mention the opponent was throwing the game away on purpose. Walking a single squad of terminators into your kill zones, and keeping the rest of his army at the back doing nothing? This looks like some kind of drama to me...

I hope the next batrep can be better.

@Isseyfaran - you make it sounds like I should be ashamed of this battle.

It was a tournament victory. Using a highly restricted list.

Im cheering I pulled out a victory, even if this guy was no Rommel.

I didnt say that.

I agree with you that your list was crap, but so was his. And his tactics were terribly horrible.

Nothing personal, but it was like the rotten against rotten. So it really wasn't quite interesting,

I see by the fact that you edited your comment 3 time you were probably aware it was pretty harsh.

You are entitled to make a criticism, but I highly suggest in future, you find more polite words than 'crap' and 'terribly horrible'. When you throw that kind of terminology in, you are still being unnecessarily rude even if you are not making a direct attack.

Let me demonstrate -

I agree with you that your list was crap, but so was his. And his tactics were terribly horrible.

to this -

I agree with you that your list was not the best, but then again neither was his. His tactics were definitely not great either in my opinion.

See the difference?

To be clear, I am not entirely sure you intended to be rude, which is the reason I wrote the above here instead of giving you an official warning and editing your post. To be honest, I speak very harshly in real life and probably wrote a lot like you do when I first joined up here... So please consider the above honest advise to prevent trouble in the future, and not an attempt to embarrass.

Anyhoo, let's all get back on topic shall we?

He posts that way to get a reaction. Don't worry about him. If he can't enjoy anything that is not a match of two Stelek lists, then that is his loss.

Yep, it sure did. And to the credit of my opponent I asked him to call it and he said nope, the wolf assault was short. Cost him the game but thats how your reputation is made, i made sure i told others how good he was to play.

2+/3++ they sure are. And lets not forget the TH they carry. Still if you roll 1s, even the mighty can fall. Wait for reports 5 and 6 and my gets hot rolls.

Maybe my dice need some love. They live in their cube, so perhaps getting them out sometimes in the sun? Or a bath?

Hahahaha.
