How Many People Did it Take to Break Diablo III’s Servers?

There was a Diablo III open beta over the weekend. You may have played it. Then again, you may have sat around like a bunch of other people trying to play it and being unable to because Blizzard's servers were melting.

Which sucks, seeing as its essentially a singleplayer game, but hey, welcome to 2012.

Anyway, those wondering just what kind of capacity it would take to create server issues with a company like Blizzard, know that the number of people playing concurrently "peaked at around 300k".

Which is a lot. And that's what betas are for! So Blizzard can say, OK, 300,000 people created problems, so when the game actually launches, we need to be ready for more.

An interesting tid bit of news Hopefully this sort of thing would never happen on a release (especially since they now know, but then so has dozens of other releases).

EDIT: Oops, wrong forum XD My bad.

Well this is exactly what betas are for I suppose. They lose nothing for this issue happening now.

The beta was publicly called a stress test and their servers worked fine for the majority of the weekend. I think the beta did it's job well. Also, diablo hasn't been a "primarily single player game" since the first one. It's a terrible single player game, almost every design decision in it is geared towards multiplayer.

I tried it, I couldn't login for about an hour after it started, but once I did get in I played with a random group for about 4 hours and had a blast.

I might have to come out of pocket for that one.

Every Dakkanaught gets a 4+ Pinch of Salt save.
When you suffer a Falling Sky hit, roll a D6 - on a 4+ the hit is ignored as per the Pinch of Salt save. On a 1-3 panic insues - you automatically fail common sense tests for the next 2 weeks and get +7 to your negativity stat. -Praxiss

Too bad most people think open betas are simply for playing the game for free. Now even more bad vibes will show up online.

Well they kind of are to an extent. Open betas have become the new demo for video games as it lets a company kill two birds with one stone (testing the game and getting people to play it to see if they like it).

Its being guessed that there were over a million unique users. (No actual data exists from Blizzard, that numbers the result of some number hammering by a bunch of nerds).

They've still got problems. I kept getting kicked off today. Why do you have to go online for a $F@&%&*(*^%&^$ing single-player game anyway???

Because publishers like to pretend it prevents piracy, which it doesn't. Really what they want is to shut out modders.

Because it's not designed to be a singleplayer game any more than starcraft 2 was. I played through the beta weekend with only a few periods where I couldn't play. It was a beta and there was a large box in the corner of the screen describing it as a "server stress test" the entire weekend. I rather enjoyed the time.
