Well I thought I might give a try posting some of my WIP painting and terrain here. This thread will all be LotR related so I'm afraid there's not much to interest the 40k fans here. Anyway, at the moment I'm working on making a Minas Tirith diorama and I'll show you what I plan to do in the photo's below. So far I've started the arches and I'm just casting some extra pillars. Progress might be a little slower than usual this week as I have an art exam, so revision is a priority. Still early stages so nothing will be put together yet. Hope you enjoy this blog.

I've decided to in fact change the pillars dumping the fancy top with a duplicate bottom adding more height and sticking to the computer model more.

I shall keep you updated

Cheers William, I hope to get some more done this week.

I tried a side panel using poster board which worked out okay. It's not quite as neat, and takes longer as it needs a texture coat as paper on it's own is just horrible - but it's generally the same. Here's some quick shots I took whilst working on it. Think the statue's fit? or are just out of place?

Fabulous work as always. I'd love to see you do some Minas Morgul/Barad Dur terrain.

You have an awesome talent for making terrain, which is further highlighted by your youtube channel.

Damn you! /greeneyedmonster.

Cheers man, thank you for the support. Hopefully the youtube channel works out. Hopefully I shall get around to building some evil terrain, have you got any suggestions specifically? I probably wouldn't do anything as large as Helm's Deep again as I just don't have the time but if you come up with anything give me a shout.

Great work! How do you make the bricks on the walls?

Well the Minas Tirith building with the arches was just done my carving out bricks with a pencil. The panel was more difficult as it was made using foamcore (or posterboard) which has paper backed sides. This means I first carve slits where the bricks are, widen them with a pencil and follow with a textured coat of sand and paint as the smooth paper is not a good finish.

In other news I have a sneak preview of my progress. Nothing glued together yet, but it's coming along nicely - what cha think?

hey, well I've been properly building terrain since I was 15, so around the 2 year mark now. I checked out your thread too btw, some fantastic stuff you got up there. Can't wait to see more. Hopefully I shall get some more terrain and painting done once I've finished my exams (on friday, whoop!!)

I have a nice update for you guys. I got a start on scribing the bricks for the first wall side. Don't worry about the ugly big gape in the middle as the arches will go there along with the sloped roof so it'll work out. Now I have a quick question, do you think I should add some more depth by using cardboard for above the windows (where the fancy brickwork is). I've got a few photo's to show you a progression but smaller details will be added later, tell me what you think.

Again just holding it together roughly to give you an idea.

Edited the pillars a little since those previous photo's giving them a captial at each end. This helps make it look a little fancier. I'm thinking of adding a ledge underneath the window and just general other small details later like lamps etc..

A sneaky update for tonight. Here's the bulk of the building pinned together. Might need to make a few small adjustments adding a cm on the arches. Again C&C's are welcome.

Okay here's the update for today. It's starting to get very difficult and tricky with the lower roof. Trying to get it match up perfectly with the building and get the angle at the right degree's AND look okay is proving difficult. Turns out I'm low on pillars, so I'll have to cast a few extra. Since I added an extra cm on to the end of the arches means one pillar part will look a lot wider, and therefore have a bad look. I'll have to ponder of that one for a while.

Officially glued and finished the roof now. Next thing that needs doing is tiles and casting some more damn pillars. My previous mould died of over use so I'm only casting 1 piece (and a pillar needs 4)

Got some work done on the roof with it now on properly, along with tiles and neatening it up. All the pillars have been glued, although I had a problem with the corner side as I had to lengthen it, therefore changing the pillar distance so I added two. That's pretty much the side finished now, so next is the smaller building like on the plans.

Looks pretty cool - for the problem corners have you thought about having an L shaped carved statue holding up the roof? Or a single person/creature with their arms/wings/etc held up to brace the two corners?

Not off the top of my head, but a 3/4 height pillar with an eagle on top with spread wings would fit the bill and be reasonably easy to carve from the foam - doesn't really need to be hugely detailed given it would have been weathered etc. If you wanted something more "integrated", you could try a "full height" pillar with a dragon curled around it and wings partially spread. I can't really tell the scale from here but I would think that a 54mm figure would probably fit under there reasonably well. I had a look on a couple of the mini sites that I know have 54mm sculpts (hasslefree and reaper) but I could not see anything that would really fit.

I got a start on the next building but I need to fiddle around with some measurements before I begin to get the arches on. Now I've decided to change my idea for the diorama as the wall in the back would have to be massive. So has anyone got a diorama layout idea? I was thinking a few buildings with a courtyard where the gondor troops are defending their position from orc attacks.
