"This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine." Well, here's the start to my Imperial Fists force. Nothing really special about it, but this one is mine:

I was kicking around the idea of painting up some Imperial Fists when the Games Day 2012 miniature was unveiled.  I think it's a great mini, and I like the old school color scheme...a lot more variation than how the Blood Angels are typically depicted.  True, he's a captain and that's why he has more flair, but when looking at that old 2nd Ed. art I noticed some of the troops were different too.  Not every little part of their armor was red.

Anyways, I wanted to apply some of that aesthetic to my Imperial Fists.  I've always liked the black trim of the 5th Company, which meshes well with the black and white quartered markings found in the Insignium Astartes.  Here are my first few tests and the beginning of my IF force:

In Ultramarines the movie, the IF 5th Co. is wiped out.  I like to think that my force represents it's rebuilding.  Given the Fists' scrimshandering ways, I can see that the new brothers of the 5th mark their armor with more black than those of other companies.

You can see from the group shot that I couldn't make up my mind about the yellow recipe.  There are three different yellows, all combinations using the old paint line.  I don't know that it shows up very well in the pics though (can you pick them out?):

I think I need to pick out the 3D chapter symbols with some more highlighting, they kind of just look like black blobs instead of fists.  I added a little paint over the decals to make them blend with the model better.

I think I've settled on my yellow, which is good because these marines need a sergeant!  He's up next, until then, let me know what you think.

Damn.
I love any PLog that contains Imperial Fists, none have been subbed before though. I love this, love the trim and love the punchiness. Great work.

Huzzah!  The sergeant is finished and so is my first little squad of Imperial Fists.  As mentioned in my last IF post, my Fists might differ in their color scheme from the standard.  If I were to strictly follow IF canon, I think the sergeants should have a yellow helmet with a red stripe or skull badge.  However, I've decided to follow a more universal codex marine scheme, similar to what you'd see on Ultras.  So, red helmed sarge:

I've always liked the mini below.  I guess I'm a sucker for the raised power fist stance.  I built my sergeant with this guy in mind:

I'm still not thrilled with how the sculpted pauldrons are coming out.  If anyone has helpful suggestions on how to make these look better, please leave a comment or link.

I think I'll switch gears from here, work on some other unit before pushing this to a 10 man.  I love Space Marines, but it's good to rotate away from tac marine after tac marine.

Also, I think I've figured out what my first little giveaway is going to be, so come back and check it out.

Very nice. Your colors are solid. They have that brand new gear look which I think they should have since your replacing the old 5th company. Great start so for and good luck with the rest.

What yellows are you using? These guys look great and it makes me want to really get going on finishing the rest of my Imperial Fists, and I could use all the suggestions in the world to get them right =)

schank23: Thanks! That's what I though about the new look too. It seems that the battle damaged look is the current norm, but it can also add many steps to the process. I thought about it, but since yellow can be a headache to start with, I decided I was too lazy to add weathering. Fortunately, my fluff lets me off the hook!

LordRogalDorn: Thanks for checking them out. The first few are different mixes, but I think I've finally settled on one. Being a glutton for punishment, it's a mix of Tausepte Ochre, Golden yellow, Sunburst yellow, and Skull White. Actually , I'm going to post a rundown on my mix and some paint swatches for comparison soon, so check back for that.

I recently got a question about the yellow paint I'm using for my Imperial Fists.  I only use Citadel paints, not because I think they are best, they're just the only paint line my FLGS carries.  I tested several yellow combinations before I found a yellow I was happy with...and then the new Citadel line came out.  While I haven't used the new paints yet, I did buy a couple pots to include in this comparison (take with a grain of salt, I can't seem to take a picture that looks just like the real thing):

1.  Iyanden Darksun
2.  Iyanden Darksun (1) : Golden Yellow (2)
3.  Golden Yellow
4.  Sunburst Yellow
5.  My Imperial Fists mix (below)
6.  Averland Sunset (new)
7.  Yriel Yellow (new)

It seems like the current trend in 40K is to paint forces with lots of battle damage.  I think that looks great, but I didn't want to do that with my Fists.  From a fluff standpoint, this force is to be part of the rebuilt 5th company after being wiped out on Mithron, so I like the look of 'fresh' equipment for them.  Along with that, these are Space Marines and they probably have teams of servitors to clean and repair every piece of gear after it returns from battle.  From a painting standpoint, yellow is a slow process for me and I didn't want to add to that with battle damage.  Okay, okay, so I'm just lazy...but this meant the yellow needed to look good since it wasn't going to be hidden under battle damage, dust, etc.

I've seen some very nice Fists based around Sunburst, but it's a little lemony for my tastes.  I really like Golden yellow, but it's too bright out of the pot (if I could take Golden into Photoshop, I'd reduce the saturation...I actually tried this by mixing in traces of purples and blues, but never like the outcome).  I like the coverage of Iyanden and have used it for details before, but when I covered a whole marine, it looked too green to me.  I mixed it with the Golden, but again, when I finished the test mini, I didn't like the greenish that was coming through.

I finally settled (two marines on the right) and mixed up a pot of Tausept Ochre (1) : Golden Yellow (4) : Sunburst Yellow (2) : Skull White (2).  Yes, I'm an idiot.  The good news for this idiot is that Averland Sunset is pretty dang close to the mix I made.  In the color samples above, I really glopped on the paint, but the bottom two (5 & 6) are thinned and closer to what you'd actually apply to a model.  While 2 looks pretty close to 5 and 6 in the pic, it has a green tinge in person.

This is way more than anyone wants to know, so I'll shut up now.  After my mix is used up, or when it's time to paint a vehicle, I'll probably just go with Averland and Yriel.
Anyone else go a little crazy when working with yellow? I'd love to hear what you've tried/use

Great work so far, and I love the fluff connection with the extra black in your scheme!

I like the extra spot colors on your sarge (green eyes, purple purity seal), but I think the gold trim on his helmet is a bit OTT. IMHO, it would look better just red.

Keep up the great work!

Young_Logan: Thanks! I may not do a huge army, but I plan to build the IF force to at least 1000 and maybe 1500 points. I like the notion of doing a mixed force...different chapters coming together in the emporer's name. I'd like to pair Lysander with Shrike and some Raven Guard. An infiltrating, fleet Lysander, mmmm, that's a tasty treat (my main goal is fun, not uber competitive)

Rawson: Thanks, the extra touch of black in the traditional IF scheme is what made this project a 'go', really liked it when I saw it. As for the helmet, I actually agree with you. The helmet I used is one of the SW helms where the trim is a part of it, but now I find it distracting and wish I'd used a stock helmet or one with a skull. I might swap it at some point, but I'll let it slide for now. Thanks for the input, advice from others is part of why I'm posting (hopefully it will lead to better minis in the future!)

Here are a couple of test scouts, and I think I'm satisfied with the way they came out. I originally planned to give them black pants/sleeves, but decided I liked the contrast of the gray against the black boots and pouches.

My inspiration for the scheme came mostly from this art:

I left things pretty simple on these guys, didn't get into the details much beyond the markings. I think I'll finish the squad in this manner, and then put a little more into the sergeant.

Couple more scouts in the pipe, and then I'm thinking about some conversion work for the sarge, so stay tuned! Let me know what you think about the tests, and what I can do to make future scouts better.

Also, don't forget about the Mephiston Giveaway, which you can sign up for through tomorrow.  I'll announce the winner July 1st!

I just finished off a couple more scouts.  I can't seem to settle on how I want to paint things, so there are some little differences here.  I took the yellow highlight a little higher and changed my red up a little.

Also, I changed the black up some, adding in blue from the Space Wolves family for all layers.  I don't know if any of these changes actually come across in the pics, but in person, I'm liking the black better.

I think I mentioned this before, but when it comes to the chapter badge I start with a decal and then paint over it.  I think the transfer blends to the rest of the model better once it's shaded and highlighted.  Also, my painting is not perfect, so that decal looks way too crisp and neat by itself!

I changed the skin up too, partly to try something new and partly because I just finished Sons of Dorn.  The recruits come from all over, so I don't think I'll have a set skin recipe.

Again, I've missed some details that I'll have to come back for, but these are done for now.  Painted the lens on one scout but not on the gun of the other...Doh!

Coming up:  Scout Sergeant!  Conversion time...

You've seen the scout squad in recent posts, and here's their sergeant. When I started, I thought I'd simply add a power fist and a head swap. Once the fist was on though, I realized that power fists don't look quite right on scouts, even though I tried to find a smaller one. Things looked out of balance, so I set to fixing it, and making up fluff as I went along.

This particular scout sergeant took on his role as trainer/teacher after the catastrophe on Mithron, being transferred from his original company to help with the rebuilding effort. He continues to use bits of his armor even in this role, but for good reasons. He maintains his poleyns, greaves and sabatons to provide stability as he weilds the power fist. And since the fist is always "up close and personal" with the enemy, he has kept the full sized pauldron on that side for added protection.

So yeah, I was basically making modifications to get the model visually balanced. The original scout legs didn't look like a 'solid base' to me, and the fist without the pauldron didn't look at home.

I actually built this guy before 6th Edition came out. I'm not through all the new rules yet, but my original plan will now have to change. I was going to run a mixed force of Imperial Fists and Raven Guard with Shrike and one of several other characters. The army would consist of in-your-face elements and supporting, long range elements. As you have probably already guessed, the aggressive portion would consist of assault terminators infiltrating with Shrike and IC #2 (ex. Lysander, Libby, Khan for Furious Charge for LC termies or S5 I5 scouts), as well as 1 or 2 large squads of infiltrating and scouting scout squads. This element would be further supported by a couple of dreadnoughts dropping in, putting a large force right on the enemy's door step. With the changes to Infiltrate, Fleet, and Furious Charge, my plan lost it's teeth.

Oh well, I still like the model and am painting him up now. Let me know what you think so far!

The scout sarge is almost finished. I still need to clean up some shadow lines, knock down some highlights, and add the squad markings. I decided that my fluff for this I.F. force and aesthetics would both be satisfied by painting the greaves black, honoring his fallen brothers and visually tying him to the rest of the scout squad. If you're wondering why he has them at all, check out this post.

I primed with gray and then a zenithal spray of white.  It doesn't show up in the pics very clearly, but this does provide some nice contrast and a guideline for later shading and highlights.

We're blocking, we're blocking, we're washing. The yellow is blocked with my I.F. yellow mix, and the black is a 1:1 mix of Chaos Black and Fenris Grey. I apologize for calling out old paints, but I have a lot to use up! The red is a 1:1 mix of Blood and Dark Flesh, the gray is Codex, and the skin is Tallarn. The yellow then receives a wash of Bestial Brown while the gray gets Badab.  Red gets good ol' Devlan Mud, and Ogryn over the Tallarn.

Okay, you caught me, this isn't really much of a step-by-step. I lost track of the camera work once I began bringing colors back up and highlighting. I also apologize for the myriad lighting setups...the background is the same in all the pics.

Mostly happy with how he's turning out, but I think I made a mistake on the power fist. I should probably swap the wing and knuckle skulls colors...red wings and silver skulls. What do you guys think? It always sucks to go back and make those type of changes at this stage, but might be worth it in the long run.

Hmmm, you can see some of those highlights I need to knock down...

That's it for now, be sure to check out the current Marine Squad Giveaway!

The scouts are ready for the table! When it came to finishing off the sergeant, I just cleaned up the lines and took the black highlights down a little. I decided not to add many markings, just the 'X'. Pretty pleased with how they turned out, the time:result ratio was acceptable, and will hopefully improve over time.

I went ahead and switched the colors on the power fist...check the original version here. I think I'm glad I did, but I'm sure not switching back now! What do you think?

I didn't pull my paint-over-decals shenanigans with the 'X', and the decal guideline was sorely missed. I can do freehand, but not without a lot of back and forth with the colors to keep it neat.

Scouts out! I think a squad of Terminators is up next, so stay tuned. For you guys with some 6th ed under your belt, should I do a shooty or TH/SS squad? I'll do both in the long run, but I'm interested to know what's proving effective in the new game.

I've been pretty distracted with Dark Vengeance, but I finally have some terminator pics to share. Thanks to everyone who gave feedback on my "shooty or TH/SS" question. Obviously, I opted for TH/SS for this first squad. I knew I'd be painting up another at some point, and I thought I might want to use the rumored DV termies for my shooty squad.

If you've seen any of my recent posts, you know I've been drooling over the Dark Vengeance set, and have pretty much decided to start two new armies! Sooo, the Deathwing models will remain Deathwing. And yes, I'm a sap and GW rolled right over me.

As with the tac squad sarge, these minis are done more in an Ultras style than strict IF. I guess I like the punch of the white helmets.

I'm not sure about the heads of the thunderhammers. I toyed with the idea of painting them in the power weapon style (well, current power weapon style, wreathed in crackling energy). 'Eavy Metal is still rockin this metallic style though, so I went that route (yeah, I chickened out, I'll tackle crackling energy another time...if you know of any good examples of THs like this, leave a link in the comments).

Details and markings coming up. Question: Does anyone mess with painting the back of the storm shields?
