Hey All:
I wanted to make sure you all knew about my gaming documentary on "our kind" kind of gaming. I think what I am excited about most about this one is: I am going back to the gaming lair and production facility of real game mfg's AFTER the con to see what is done behind the scenes and in the hobby lair of a gamer. My intro "video" says it all. I would be honored if you checked it out, and votes yes by donating a pledge.
Happy Gaming.

Presumably to see if they obviously read the dictionary like you...
OT: Sounds like an interesting project, isn't there a similar Morgan Spurlock film about this kind of topic anyway?

The idea, from what I've gathered, is to create a documentary about what it means to be a gamer, by featuring gamers from several different 'disciplines'. Thereby you'd have a documentary that kind of explains what gaming is as a whole that you could show to people who are non-gamers to educate them. So instead of everyone thinking every 'gamer' means 'you play Dungeons & Dragons right?', they would now understand there are different facets of what it means to be a gamer via this documentary.
That documentary appears focused on tabletop gaming where as Raef's Documentary is going to look at several different factets of gaming, like board gaming, cosplay, etc.
Grimtuff wrote:OT: Sounds like an interesting project, isn't there a similar Morgan Spurlock film about this kind of topic anyway?
He just did a documentary about Comicon. I haven't seen it yet, but I think its more focused around people's experiences at that con than truly trying to explain the different facets of gaming, although it probably does share a lot of similar ground I'd bet.
Raef, have you seen the Morgan Spurlock documentary about Comicon (if not you probably should!)? If so, how will the themes in your doc compare to that one?

Thanks for the clarity Yakface that is exactly what I am shooting for and thanks for the help on the link Brett!
No I have purposefully stayed away from watching any of the great gaming/ comic documentaries for about 6 months now. I want to make sure I do not accidentally "copy" what they do. I love Spurlocks's docu's though that one may be hard to stay away from.
Regards,
Raef

I would suggest before anyone poo-poos too much to check out some off the documentaries that have been made int his style. http://www.darkonthemovie.com/ Darkon is an amazing documentary into the 'deviant subculture' of LARPING. Shows how these people are just like everyone else.
People look down on wargaming because they don't understand it and have terrible preconceived notions about it.

Oddly enough, the people of Darkon aren't as fond of the documentary as you might be.

I think the same is probably true about pretty much every documentary ever made (some of the people in the movie don't much care for their portrayal).

Good luck with it. As a rule, I'm not a kickstarter-kinda guy myself, so I won't personally be donating, but I wish you the best of luck with it.
I couldn't agree with this more. I was initially interested in this but I don't even get a DVD for $25? Seriously it takes almost nothing to push out a DVD once you are already doing it.

Seems like Kickstarters are turning into give me money. This is ridiculous, mod can flag me for whatever, but I have the right to give an opinion here:
This kind of kickstarter is a joke, you're asking for money from gamers to make a documentary, even the kickstarter pledge levels encourage this being a joke. You can pay to have yourself a pivotal person in the documentary? lol
Seriously, just seriously, April 1st was a few months ago by this point. By the sounds of it, your documentary could be produced in a day with a handheld camera and a few interviews.
If kickstarters keep going like this, I may as well ask for a Kickstarter to help me restore a Shelby Cobra.

But that's the beauty of kickstarter. It in-and-of-itself is a weeding out process. So if something isn't worthy, then it doesn't get funding and something that is worthy does get funding. So I don't think there's need to lament over the state of what projects are being kickstarted because only projects that end up appealing to people succeed.
So if you think this particular project isn't worth your money, then no big deal, you just don't contribute and if most people agree with you (as it kind of looks like they are from the initial numbers) then the project doesn't get its funding and that's that.

These kind of posts crack me UP. Seriously they do.
Well to shed some clarity for better or worse, and yes, I intend this kickstarter to do one thing and one thing only. I want it to tell me if others want to see the movie I want to make. The answer may well just be no. You know what? I am ok with that. I already have put my mark (such that it is) on literally tens of thousands of people through my time at the d6g. So my ego is full already. This is a movie I want to make for gamers. If we gamers do not want it, I am ok with that personally. That is what is cool. People can speak with their wallets.
As for the funding, here is a sample on the budget. I am wanting to film in 7 locations. 1 at gencon which is 5 days plus 2 of travel for the staff. So that's 7 locations with a crew of 3. Just add up the flights, and food and forget the technical equipment and you will start to see where the budget amount comes from. And, I am filming on the RED (Epic). Why? Cause it was offered to me at a great deal. Two, its kick-butt!! Could I do one on a hand held. Yep. But don't want to, I want it to look legit. Why? Because I am passionate that we gamers are not portrayed well in documentaries. I want to portray the real us. Also for the budget, Editing. Editing 30-60-100 hours of footage does not come cheap. BE Warned, I have been advised that many kickstarter documentary films do not properly prepare a budget for editors and therefore film one but run out of money in editing and as a result the documentary can be crap! I want to avoid that. Also, kickstarter fulfillment costs money as well for that matter. IE. It costs 1.09 to press 1,000.00 DVD's but how much to ship? 2.00 to 3.00 with a cool printed card board case. So lets call it that 4.00 per DVD. So if 1,000.00 people fund, that's obviously 4k and if 2,000.00 people fund thats 8K just in DVD fulfillment!
Anyhoo that is my two cents, thanks for listening. Oh, and I will be appearing on the d6generation to air this Monday, if you want to hear even more on the subject of the project and if I think it will fund.

You need to check out http://ubergoobermovie.com/, you simply do. It was done back in '05 and it's amazing. It interviews some of the leading (at the time) developers, provides as close as you can get to an objective view regarding gamers, and it's both incredibly well done and incredibly entertaining, and really provides great insight (the interview with the Wizkidz developer is especially good). And basically, I see no difference between Ubergoober and the reaf documantary, other than the first has already been out there for years and the second will focus more on board gamers rather than roleplayers. I see nothing in your KS that encourages me to donate, and a lot that points ignoring what has already come before (like what I quoted). I see a lot of asking for money for something that has been well covered, without any real new take on the subject, and no promise that it will be new and different.. Please take that with sincerity, and not hatred, I just don't see what you are doing that hasn't been done before, and your biggest failure is to impress upon poeple that it IS any different. Please keep your comments on-topic. Thanks. -- Manchu.

I've now finished the latest D6G podcast where Reaf explains everything including what he INTENDED to do with all this, and now I firmly believe he really doesn't know how to convey his vision into a KS project, let alone a documentary. Maybe he has a great idea for what could happen, maybe he has a great seed idea, but NONE of it translates into a strong enough final product. It's simply not a strong enough idea, let alone a strong pitch for KS.
GL to your future endeavors, hopefully you dial things in more next time, but based on wha you've (Reaf) shown and what you say you plan on doing, i can't see it going anywhere.

I just listened to Raef's explanation as well, but I had a different take; I think he has some really good ideas behind this project, and I really do hope that he manages to get it off the ground. I've actually just contributed; my first Kickstarter ever! Sorry for getting in on this late, but I have been a bit busy lately and this one kind of snuck in under my radar .
