So I was asked to do this tutorial thing for this model . I hope I can make this easy to follow and that it helps anyone looking to try thins effect. I am not the best at photography so I have done the best I can to make the pictures clear, I am sorry if they are not. Also the paints I use are just from my local hobby store so to help more I will give both the GW and valejo colors that are closest based on what the bolter and chainsword SM painter tells me. well lets begin

Step 1 First start with the model painted with all areas that will not be under the effect done with not including highlights. I would recommend picking out the areas that you want to do the effect on first and not putting more than a base coat over them.

Step 2 Apply two coats of Folk Art Dark Brown ( GW Bestial Brown, Valejo Orange Brown) and I used a wash following Les' wash recipe for soft body black from here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/261541.page

Step 3 Drybrush a layer of folk Art Burnt Sienna ( GW Terracotta, Valejo copper)

Step 4 Next is drybrush of burnt sienna and Folk Art Parchment ( GW Pallid flsh, P3 Trollblood highlight) mixed 1:1

After this a very thin drybrush of Burnt sienna and white mixed to whatever effect you want can be applied to give added texture and give certain areas more effect. Also follow this procedure on the base as well to match the model color and base color to help with the blending in effect.

Now start on the lightning effect. First is a line of Folk Art Thunder blue ( GW Midnight blue, Valejo blue) I use a 3/0 brush and the line is about equal to the brush width. Also at this point add in the branches out from the main line.

Next step is to add a line of Folk Art True Blue ( GW mordian blue, valejo blue fluorescent) leaving a bit of the thunder blue on each side.

Next is a second line of true blue and parchment mixed 1:1 again leaving some of the previous layer on either side.

The final addition is small patches of white at well whatever points you want. I placed it where I had several branches come together similar to power sword techniques.

and thats that. or at least how I do things Lastly here are some group shots of the three I have finished in this style.

I hope this helps and that everyone enjoys this tutorial. Thanks to all.

Absolutely, may be more difficult though as I believe they have smaller areas over their bodies, more intricate designs might be nescessary

That look's so cool! Very nice idea! The lightning/fading effect was very well done. I hope you don't mind me stealing this for my own stealth suits

@caminacambob
I would paint it the same color of the sand, but i dont like the sand texture on the model personally...
If you want to do this i would suggest the really, really fine sand mixed into the paint instead of sticking the sand to the model

Why buy expensive 40k at retail price?

See the link above and get decent 40k armies for a decent price.
