I'd like to hear the opinion of our talented rules lawyers: Do Vector Strikes confer a cover save?

My assumption is no, since it is done on the movement phase, and precedent set by the Necrons.

An Igloo Deep North in Canada, eh?

The better question is "where does it say you can't take cover saves?" 40k is permissive, and since we can take cover saves against shooting/psychic/whatever you want to classify this as so long as we are in cover, there needs to be a rule that says we can't.

I'm saying cover saves are in.

Both players should be using the least durable units possible, with the house rule that all players remove an article of clothing every time you lose a unit, and take a drink every time you kill one of your opponent's units.
I have no idea which army will be triumphant, but I can assure you that everyone wins.

RAW you can take cover saves, especially because of the Chariot Sweep strike precedent.

Now, this looks like yet another GW oversight and will probably be FAQed later.

I would say rules are restrictive in nature - so is most of game design.

Secondly, cover is taken on shooting attacks and psychic shooting attacks. Unless I am mistaken, cover cannot be taken for maledictions, they can be taken for witchfires. Furthermore, every instance of restricting cover saves comes in the form of something done in the shooting phase unless I stand correct.

This is also assuming we're not going into the argument of losing a model to a test and not being to take saves, despite there being no restrictions.

Can you write out the precedent? and does this apply for Necrons in their command barge?

JD - nope, permissive. The entire ruleset is written from telling you what you CAN do first, then restricting it if needed. If it were restrictive it has to explicitly state eery single action you cannot take. No game does this.

You cannot take cover saves for maledictions - they dont cause wounds, or g or p hits on vehicles.

Precedent is gained multiple times in the nid FAQ - Mawlocs, as an easy example.

@nosferatu - what about objuration mechanicum (malediction) cover saves?

True - you would still get cover saves, as pointed out GW have *repeatedly* ruled that you gain cover saves from anything that does not explicitly deny it.

Yeah RAW you get cover save. Trust me, it's a PITA and kinda silly since I *presume* you're swooping down and tearing the hell out of the vehicle / squad you're striking (ie a CC attack). The main problem is Vector Strike is such a weird duck to begin with because what exactly is it anyway? I lose a shooting attack in the shooting phase... so is VS shooting? I'm ripping stuff up with my claws though right? Where do I assign wounds?? From where I end up after the move? From the closest model before I moved? Random? C'mon GW, super freaking lazy stuff here.

As a Nid I pretty much start every game with, "so what are your thoughts on Grounding; what are your thoughts on Vector Strike cover; what are your thoughts on Vector Strike wound allocation..." so on and so forth.

Cover makes sense against vector strikes. If i was in ruins, I wouldn't stand up to let some giant bird monster swipe at me as he flys over. If he just blows through the wall, at least I tried, you know?
