Hi, thanks for reading in advance.

I have a bunch of models ready for use but i'm wondering about the color scheme. I started working on one soldier, tell me what you think and what can be better!

Right now the main colors are gw liche purple (for the inside of the long coats and certain details), and gw scaly green / vallejo ger. fieldgrey / vallejo uniforme aleman.

Any suggestions are highly welcome.

Life is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless and perfunctory gift nobody ever asked for. Unreturnable because all you get back is another box of chocolates. So you're stuck with this undefinable whipped mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down because there's nothing left to drink. Sure once in a while there's a peanut butter cup or a English toffee, but they're gone too fast and the taste is fleeting. So you end up with nothing but broken bits of hardened jelly and teeth shattering nuts. If you're desperate enough to eat those all you've got left is a. An empty box, filled with useless brown paper wrappers.

The purple may be a little too mid tone. I mean, the green is sort of desaturated, middle of the road teal green, which looks fantastic. For an alternate color, you want something significantly lighter, darker or very colorful. For DKOK, I'd think lighter may be better. I'd think a light grey or white would look really good. If you are really stuck on purple, perhaps one of the very light or bright purples would stick out better, but I do have to say that the purple kind of calls attention to how teal the uniform is. I think if you surrounded that great sage green sort of color with greys and tans and browns, it would look like a great uniform, but with alot of bright colors around it, it'll look cartoonish. I'll make a couple of mock ups and get back with you.

It's an ugly planet. A bug planet.

I spent some time messing around in MS Paint. I've attached some mock ups. 1-6 are based off the idea of the jacket being Scaly Green and 7-9 are based off the idea of the highlight being Litch Purple. I realized halfway through that maybe you were really big on the purple highlight whereas I was really stuck on the green jackets. Either way, I tried not to go too tradional, pretty much anyone can do brown on brown on brown, though it's probably worth noting I mostly did grey on grey on grey. For most of them, the light grey is Slaanesh Grey, which is a cool purple grey, the mid dark grey is Eschin Grey. I think number 8 came out surprisingly good, which is mostly Skavenblight Dinge and Stormvermin Fur. Either way, I figured this may be helpful. If you're going to use it to come up with paint schemes, don't use straight black in MS Paint, the borders to the guys are straight black and it will fill it in as well. And they should all be mostly usable for filling in, but the full sized one to the right side is most functional.

Hey wow! Thanks for the suggestions! Sorry it took me a while to respond.

I agree that the purple is too dull, too general a color to match with the green. You're really giving me better idea's. I decided not to go with the traditional colors because almost all dkok divisions are colored the same way. I personally like purple, but then again, the green does look more like a uniform color than the purple does. Perhaps the purple should be minimized (or atleast on the coats, and then perhaps use it on the standarts and small emblems?).

I think 8 really looks nice where the gold buttons really standout on the dark brown coat. Good job on different color schemes by the way, that will really help me deciding things

Also i made a few more pictures with some better lighting.

Keep posting, whether you change the paintjob or not. I'm a huge fan of the DKOK and I'm glad to see a nontraditional paintjob. Not to toot my own horn, but I think 8 came out really good especially if you want to keep the purple. I know what it's like trying to work that way around. I started my Guard regiment with it in my mind that orange would have to be the highlight color because I was sick of seeing red and blue highlights on Guardsmen, so I built the whole scheme around that idea. Even if you don't include purple in the uniform, you certainly can use it as a highlight color on flags, badges, tanks and all that. Keep doing good work.

Thank you once more. Its really motivating to receive replies!

And i'll do my best, i still have a bunch of Dkok models ready to be assembled. And even more that need a base-coat but i don't have a compressor for an airbrush nor a base-primer The ones i did work on i base-coated by hand, but that's really time consuming and demotivating.

Anyway i have the following already:
- 5 Krieg Death Riders
- 1 Squad (advancing)
- 2 Command squads (of which 1 HQ)
- 1 Light centaur vehicle (/tractor)
- 2 Heavy weapon squads
- 1 Engineer squad
And the following is still being handled in some country's shipping department:
- Gorgon Super heavy transport
- 5 + squads from gorgon infantry sprue's (that need to be taken apart for at least 4 squads)
- 1 more Heavy weapon team

I'll keep this topic somewhat up to date

Edited a few times with more things for the list, and pictures!

Please tell me you're planning on including Commissars and Quad Guns. The DKOK Commissars are so much better looking than the standard ones, and if you're planning on playing, they'll certainly be a real shot in the arm for an IG army that are more close combat oriented. And the Quad Guns are cool looking, but more importantly, are amazing on the board. I am glad to see you are capitalizing on the coolest models availalbe, the Cavalry. Great models and a squad of ten will statistically take out 6 Marines on the charge.

Well, actually I'm trying to find some cheap models of commissars on ebay right now But then again almost everything I use is somewhat converted to make it fall in more with the rest of the division.

However i must admit that i don't play. I wish i could, i wish i did, but i never got the motivation before to actually finish an army. Although the Dkok i have been loving for years, and like a month ago i found some relatively cheap on ebay

What i want in any case is a nice board, which would consist of a sort of stretch of land, (no man's land), a few trenches and a (visible from the side) tunneling squad underground. That's pretty much what i had in mind, but with this hobby, idea's are constantly changing. Right now i'm thinking of doing a model with purple and brown (scheme 8: ). Also i made more pictures of some of my favorite mini's so far (of Dkok).

Edit: speaking of Dkok Commissars, i got the 2 full miniatures (http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Imperial_Guard/Death-Korps-of-Krieg/DEATH_KORPS_OF_KRIEG_INFANTRY_AND_ACCESSORIES/DEATH_KORPS_OF_KRIEG_COMMISSAR_SET.html) for 30 euro's (including shipping, which is still cheaper than forgeworld).

These may help. And if it makes you feel any better, I've been playing for about a year and a half and I've painted about seven squads in three different armies and most of those are unfinished. I hate playing with dudes that are primered, but whatever. The hobby and the game are both a hell of alot of fun.

Also, it's worth noting that the color swatches I got for those test figures are from the GW site, and the two colors I was using were Skavenblight Dinge and Stormvermin Fur, which are really cool grey browns with just a hint of purple in them. I haven't found an excuse to use them yet, but I've been looking for one.

Hey thanks,

I did find the codex and Imperial Armour books on the net a few weeks ago (i just couldn't wait finding pictures etc). Perhaps i should give it a chance, but even then I'm still short of a lot of models, and money is running out

I was basically just assuming you were pretty new to the hobby and showing you some conversion parts if you needed them. I have so much crap planned out and so little that I'm actually doing due to the money situation over here as well. This is an insanely expensive hobby.

Yeah especially if you want some things from FW/GW. I mean on the net you can find what you need relatively cheap or atleast good alternatives. GW/FW don't seem to care that much and rather keep it exclusive(?).

Well i used to paint some of these mini's like 8 to 10 years ago, but only recently i restarted on Dkok (but i've always wanted the death riders and infantry).

Here are a few of my favorite looking mini's so far: (which i should just finish up and paint!! - gakky thing is my green stuff is old, and its really hard with little sand sized rocks (or so say my thumbs.. )).

I'm including it here rather than a PM because I can't send attachments in a PM. This is basically the plan for my guard army. There have been a few changes since 6th came out. I can't use the Raven Guard Scouts as Storm Troopers anymore, so I need to come up with a new Storm Trooper unit. Also, the detachement I've found in the games I've been playing so far is the Space Wolves, but I'd really rather include Raven Guard as I feel like they look cooler, though I'm not sure how people would handle me saying "The Raven Guard are playing by Space Wolves rules". Small kinks to work out. Either way, I sort of wanted to show this off, I've been working on the plan on and off for a few months now.

Oh wow. You really put a lot of work into the concept and color schemes of your army. Did you already start paiting/accuiring the models?

By the way, would it be possible to use other models from other ranges in your army? - or would that only work with in agreement with your enemy?

And i must say, especially Chenkov looks great!

I've got three squads of regular infantry assembled, one fully painted, one just touch ups from being done and one base coated. The reason why I don't have more done is because before this I was planning on using Defiance Games' Marines for my infantry, but I found them very difficult to paint with my limited ability. All I'm capable of doing is washing and drybrushing, and it wasn't working out for me. I got about twenty deep on them before realizing I wasn't satisfied with the results.

As far as using other models, as long as it's clear what's what, I've never had anyone complain. In fact, the first time I've ever had someone complain is when I ran out of infantry models and had to use my buddies Dark Eldar models as Guardsman. Combined with the fact that the rest of my army was Imperial Guard, Space Wolves and Space Marines already and it was, admittedly, a recipe for disaster. I figure as long as the model is close to the intent with the same base size and comparable line of sight, I don't think anyone will have an issue. If you decide to use those Drop Troops you were showing me as, hypothetically, heavy weapons squads, you'd have to base them on 60mm despite the fact that they would look ludicrous on such a large base, but it would keep people from calling foul and coming up with reasons why a 40mm base would benefit you. The plan I have for my psyker squad is to have a fleet of drones with the Overlord being an operator. They're 6mm figures, so the model ends up being about 25mm long, which is perfect. So now no one can complain that I'm using a larger base for blah blah blah.

It's an ugly planet. A bug planet.

Yeah i see what you're getting at. Well I'm not sure as what they would function. Perhaps as a squad leader, or commander. A flamer guardsman, who knows. And i realize bases are important as they influence the game options (everything).

One of my Death Riders, i thought i would be super thrilled using resin bases (not meaning i don't!), but making them yourself is way more fun than just paiting..

The base is all dry, the mud is a variation of (different sands, small medium) PVA glue, some realistic water (which helps to give it a bit of shine) and some pigments to bring up the color a bit. I'm not sure how much i'll do to it later, although for now it looks pretty good (or so i thought).

Edit: also, i did a lot of green stuff work that had to be done last night. And i started building the 40mm base for the Ridemaster. Pictures as soon as i have the energy to make some - done it

Whatever your secret formula, it looks great. And I like the Captain bars on the lance of the Ridemaster.

The minis that I'll be using for the base of Black Flag Group 5 will be Warlord Games' Commandos. I don't have them yet, though. I didn't even hear about them until about two weeks ago or so. From scale shots I've seen, they're a bit shorter and a bit thinner than GW figures, but they look really good and they are really well priced. They're Veterans with Camo Cloaks, so I wanted them to look like light infantry, but good luck trying to find good looking plastic sci fi kits with less armor than a standard guardsman. So, despite the fact that they are WWII models, I'm pretty sure that by using the same beret heads for both veteran teams and adding the scoped lasguns, they'll fit in just fine. Throw in some gauze camo cloaks, an aquila to fasten the cloak and a vaguely sniper rifle looking heavy weapon conversion, and I'm all set. I'll try and figure out my wife's camera and throw up a couple shots of the one squad I have completed. I've never taken a photo of a mini I've painted before and I fully anticipate that I'll cringe when I see it fifty times the normal size.

These are some photos of the one squad I've completed for the 14th Redemption Cavalry Regt. and my one squad of Death Korps of Krieg. The DKOK squad was the first thing I had painted as an adult. As a little kid, I used to paint minis now and againt with dried up Testors paints, but I painted like a little kid. To give you an idea of my skill level, when I painted the DKOK models, I had never heard of wash. Those models are all done by basecoating and drybrushing.

Hehehe, well she can't feel that bad, she being the one who suggested it in the first place

And as far as the painting goes, i think they look rather good, gritty and slightly worn down (and the detail on the Sgt.'s chest looks rather nice. I haven't tried painting those little dials yet - to be honest, not looking forward to it I'll probably save those for some time..

Edit: do you have any idea how you used to paint the Dkok's masks? I think they look particularly matching.

Hey, i don't know why i haven't thought about this, but i think i'll go with scab red to mix with the liche purple, both are rather dark but smooth looking colors. I'll post pictures of a test mini asap

Also i started on 1 mini with a brown coat against a purple mask and the insides of the long coat. Also pictures coming. I'm not sure how i like how he looks right now, without the backpack/checkpack, pockets and gloves painted he looks too brown (mainly because i didn't prime the models black but gave them multiple washes of flesh wash, black paint and some brownish paint to get thin but covering layers).
