Ah, a resurrection of one of my favorite game types, the old "Carnage" Mission. I'm working on updating it for 6th edition, so when I had the chance to con^H^H^H ask Skalk, Galorn and Skalk's friend Fionn to play...well, they stepped right up! Also, a total hat-tip to all the folks who have written narrative Batreps.

The basic rules: Terrain is set up with an objective in the center, and blocking terrain between corners. Each player has a 1'x2' deployment zone. No deep striking, you have to slog on. 1000 points of whatever you think can take and hold the center. 4 turns. Each close combat round, you fight whatever CC you're involved with. The goal is to have the most wounds within 3" of the objective, at the end of the game. Vehicles do not count, but Dreads (and other walkers) count for 5 wounds.

We're using Mysterious Objectives, Mysterious Terrain, and the center objective is some form of Archaeotech. Which will turn out to be incredibly amusing.

I had a silly IG force consisting of artillery and some flyers. Skalk took a 'zerker force, Finn had Necrons and Galorn had his mighty Nurgle force.

Please note: Mistakes were made. We're still learning 6th edition. I ask that you don't hammer us for the mistakes in the comments. Thank you.

Here's the table, pre-setup. There's a roll-off, and each player sets up their forces, the winner also goes first. Turn order is clockwise. Chaos 'zerkers won the roll.

+++ The feeble mind falls to Heresy. The strong mind falls to Chaos. +++

We'd been given our orders. The 114th Gryphonne Artillery Company "E" Battery was to push toward a beacon tower in Sector 49/A. The siege of Fallon's World had been going on for several years, disrupted only by the sudden appearance of Necrontyr. The AdMech boffins claimed there was archaeotech on the world, which may have explained the forces of of Ruinous Powers arrival...but we think the Boffins got in over their heads. Reinforcements were called for, and we're told that several Strike Cruisers belonging to Novamarines and Space Wolves are on their way. Until they arrive, we must chin up and do what's what.

Our path to the beacon was thoughtfully plowed by a group of Red Banner Leman Russ, and we were able to set up a Manticore and Deathstrike Launcher within easy sighting range of the target. We found, to our dismay, that two of the Ruinous Powers AND a group of Necrontyr had arrived as well. We immediately put in a call for air support, and I informed my crew to stay in their vehicles in case they needed to beat a hasty retreat back to the lines. While all we had for defense was our trusty Salamander Command Vehicle, I hoped the weight of fire of the Manticore would be enough to...dissuade the enemy.

Our job was to launch the Deathstrike and destroy the beacon...and whatever device it marked. Of course, this was an "at all costs" order, which we have been receiving far too often as of late.

First turn:
Spoiler:

A general push by all forces, except for the IG, who hold in place, realizing just how awful their situation really is. Skalk's Chaos Marines find that their pile of junk contains some ancient stabilization field, which makes their shooting a lot better. This will be felt by the Necrons. The Necrons discover that the sludge pool is, in fact, an "Iceblood"-like pond, which is dangerous terrain but also gives them re-rolls on their armour saves. They gleefully bathe in it, their reanimation protocols saving them from the worst of it. Mostly. A group of Necron Destroyers try to land in some ruins and...one gets ruined.

The Necrons savagely glance (and then penetrate) the 'zerker's Dreadnought, leaving it wrecked. ("I have fought for millennia, trudged all the way to this planet, only to decide I'm tired and I'm going to take a nap.") The IG Manticore bombs the Nurgle Rhino, but only manages to strip off 2 HP. A tactical note for my readers: Thanks to the change in blast template rules, the Storm Eagle Rockets (STR 10, AP4) may not be worth the 15 point upgrade. Yes, you may get that extra pieplate or two, but the loss of AP1 on the table? Jury's still out.

Well played! A solid bombardment of those pesky Nurgle by the Manticore crew. An extra serving of rum for them, if we all survive. Of course, now we have the attention of those pentilent bastards, so that may have been less well-played than one might think. On the plus side, those Berzerkers and Necrons seem keen to dash each other's brains out, tally-ho! I am told that the Missile Crew have locked down their stabilizers, and are now attempting to wake the machine spirit. Good luck, lads!

Second Turn:
Spoiler:

The loss of the dread has enraged the Khornate forces, who wheel around to assault the Necrons. The Necrons open up against the forces of Khorne. Meanwhile, Nurgle continues to push forward, with the Terminator element turning towards the relatively defenseless Imperial Guard.

The Chaos Marines destroy an entire element of Necrons thanks to the re-rolling pile of junk.

The Necron Command Chariot smashes into the Berzekers...only to be hacked to pieces in a single round. The Overlord engages mindshackle scarabs against the Chaos Lord, who then eats his own Daemon weapon, losing a wound, and then takes a second wound from the Overlord's scythe.

The Plague Marines take the hill, and uncover....an ancient virus! Just what they were looking for! And it is so virulent, it kills a plague marine! It is a good day for Papa Nurgle. The Plague Terminators, however, find only crates filled with "The Infantryman's Uplifting Primer".

A Vendetta from the orbiting frigate arrives, and combines with the Manticore to manage a whopping one more plague marine kill. The Deathstrike's machine spirit decides that it is too early, and hits the 'snooze' button on the launch console.

Guardsman Marbo appears in some wreckage, nearby the Berzerker/Necron feud.

Oh, jolly good! Finally, some air support! Look at that ripple of fire! The combination of heavy bolters, multilasers, rocket pods, and another excellent volley off of the Manticore should... Oh. Damn, damn, and triple-damn those Nurgle bastards! I think I may need to get out of my command vehicle and kick the Deathstrike crew into action.

Third Turn:
Spoiler:

The Chaos Lord manages to shake off the Shackles...only to find that his Daemon Weapon is very very angry. Very. Angry. The Overload fails to finish the job, thanks to good invulnerable save rolls. Meanwhile, the augmented Chaos Marines gun down the remaining Necron Warriors, who flee. The remaining Destroyers (who managed to lose another one getting out of the ruins) gang up with some Immortals and another Overlord, to try and take out the Nurgle Daemon Prince. This will end in a surprising result. However, the Chaos Lord whiffs an entire round of combat, only to be cut down by the Overlord's Scythe.

The Nurgle marines push onto the center objective, and the combat between the DP and Necrons pushes for another round. The Nurgle Terminators apparently find the Uplifting Primer to be hilarious reading, and they stick around (the Nurgle Terminators could not roll better than a '2' on their difficult terrain checks for the entire game.)

Finally, the Deathstrike Missile machine spirit wakes up, and blows the center objective to hell. The Rhino and a ton of marines cease to exist. Meanwhile, a full salvo from the Manticore thins the horde of Chaos Marines. An Imperial Navy Vendetta arrives, shoots up the Nurgle Marines, and the Valk pours some fire into the Chaos Marines (doing next to nothing, once again).

Well, you can always count on the boys from the Navy! When they show up, they show up in force! And, whoa, what a beautiful launch! That Deathstrike really showed those poncy Nurgle who's boss, yes sir! Wiped that virus out too, I bet. Score one for the good guys, now it is time to pack up and head back for tea and cake.

[Radio noise]

What? No, we do NOT have to 'examine the wreckage'! There's still a massive battle all over the place, and? What? Oh my god...

Turn the Fourth:
Spoiler:

In the last turn, we see the Berzekers beat the tar out of the Overlord who killed their Chaos Lord, and the Chaos Marines rush the recently-cleansed objective. Nurgle pushes some remaining forces up, but they get a bad difficult terrain roll to scale the cliffside.

The Necrons mindshackle the DP, and take him down. Mindshackle is simply AMAZING in 6th edition, and desperately needs to be FAQ'd.

Finally, the two Imperial Navy aircraft drop into Hover mode, and try to dump their precious, precious cargo onto the center objective. One unit lands On Target...the other unit...lands on the Nurgle Marines, and are summarily dispatched.

PROTIP: If you deploy Guardsman Marbo into some ruins...don't forget about him the entire game like I did.

I cannot believe what I am watching. Two squads of veterans are jumping out of the Navy flyers, and attempting to seize the objective. It is an absolute suicide mission, but we do what we're ordered to do. One group managed to land tight, good job lads. You'll never survive that Chaos Horde, but at least you can confirm the virus has been neutralized. Oh...the other squad's chutes mis-fired, and...oh. They're being torn to pieces by Nurgle Marines. They didn't stand a chance. I...I think I'm going to be ill.

LEFtenant, order a full withdrawal. Our mission here is done, and those guardsmen aren't going to survive long enough to be rescued. Signal the Navy and Command that we're moving out.

The final result is that the IG take the win, with 10 wounds. A pure luck victory, but what a battle. The mission certainly lived up to it's name, "Carnage". And I have some good ideas on how to finalize the rules for Carnage in 6th Edition.

Mysterious terrain, objectives, and archaeotech for the win.

Warlord Traits...not so much. We agreed, over the course of the day, that they're just too random to be useful in most games, and you can safely ignore them.

Thanks for reading.

That was awesome.

You know, the thing that really got me about Fionn taking out my Khorne Dread on the first turn was the fact that he KNEW I was working feverishly to finish the paintjob on it and that I was really excited to field it. Since it was all DCC w/ no ranged weapons he was as excited as I was to see it rip into some Imperial armor, etc. So what does he do on the FIRST TURN? Light up my Dread w/ gauss rifles.

So yeah. That put "Operation- Table Fionn" into full swing. I stayed true to my word- I didn't win, but I guaranteed that he lost. > hahhahhhaa
