How do peeps?!

By far one of my fav games GW ever produced was Gorkamorka!

I won't go too much into the game/story here, some older gamers will remember it but if you've never heard of it but have a love of skirmish games (like Necromunda) and Orks doing what they do best... Killin' stuff and Racin' about in da Trukk! Then def have a look! Its easy to find PDFs of the rules and any of the current GW Ork range would work in the game setting!

I've been planning on making two mobs for it since picking modelling back up and thought I'd start a P&M Blog to document this process. This will be a bit of a side project for me...whenever I iz feelin' a bit orky, I'll have a bash at 'em so I apologise if y'all are expecting quick progress here...cause it is gonna happen' like that! Haha

The two mobs will be 1. Gorka Ork Mob: "Da Green Skull Boyz" & 2. Mutie Raiders: "The Immortal Sand Wraiths Of The Five Dunes"

I must admit I'm really looking forward to getting the plasicard out and making some dead Orky trukks and trakks for the Boyz to ride in. I've never built custom vehicles and there are so many great ork kits out ATM I smile just thinking about the crazy rust-buckets I could build...Secondly my mutie raiders will have a strong Star Wars "Sand People" feel to them which I'm also really excited about.

I'll kick off with the Orks...Each mob is led by a Nob, who's the biggest baddest Ork around and he's Da Boss! I showcased these two WIPs on my 'Munda Blog originally so some of you may have seen 'em before but they really belong here so here we go:

Nob 1: Deffklaws

CC geared Nob. I've not done much custom work here for him. I had a few nob bits lying around from other projects so was able to make him without spending more cash. I'm happy with him, I wanted to make an orky answer to Marneus Calgar. Hehe well sorta!

However upon re-reading the game rules I learned that two Power Klaws are not permitted so I may have to re-work one of them into a "counts as" cc.weapon or gun of some type. Also may have to re-work the muscle on one arm because they don't look quite right to me.

The orks of Gorkamorka aren't as "flashy" as their 40k Space Ork cousins...due to their isolated post-apocolyic environment and I hope to achieve this 'look' for my mob by forcing myself not to add too much to them and throwing in some WHFB ork parts to the mix to make the mob look more savage and tribal.

Nob 2: Unnamed as yet - Shoota/Shield

Again made mainly from my bitz box...whilst re-reading the rules it came to my attention that Nobs are the only members with starting BS 4, meaning they're probably the only ones with any real chance of hitting anything when shooting, as GM has lots of shooting mods. to represent the chaos of racing around the desert in the back of a trukk! So made him as an alt. option to a CC geared nob for more tatical play...well you know...for an ork haha

The rest of the mob is made up of Vehicles(Trukks, Trakks and Bikes), Spanners who maintain them, Boys who iz ment for fighting, and Yoofs, juvinal orks who are hungry for action but not quite as hardy as their older cousins. I have rought ideas for these but nothing built as yet. I'm not sure what I'll build next for them, probably da boys and yoofs and save the vehicles for last as they're the most unknown territory for me as a modeler.

As for my Mutie Raiders...well 3/6 of these guys are roughly built, as are their steeds, but not to the point where I want to show them off just yet...each will need a lot of GS work to get the look I'm after but I have most parts now and its all planned out, just a case of getting around to it. They'll hopefully be in the next update.

Well thats it for now guys cheers for reading and all comments/crits welcome.

I really like the work you've done so far. Its really stellar stuff, and I can't wait to see what you do with the Muties. If you want a real Sand-People feel, might I suggest using Tallarn models? Their style would really fit into the sandpeople feel.

If I had a dollar for every dollar I spent I'd have all my money back.

What great conversions . I really like the shield conversion a lot . I hope to see more !

The only poorly painted miniature is the one that is not painted.

@ Alfonso - Thank you! These two were pretty simple builds. I'll mix it up a bit with some kit bashes/conversions when I make the mobs boyz/yoofs.

@ Brotheralexos - Aw thanks mate! Yeah I had a browse through the ol'FW catalogue for inspiration when I was thinking about these guys...I remember this thing, have you seen this? Its awesome and quite bizzare!
Spoiler:
They'll def have a bit of this going on...desert robes, hoods and shemagh scarfs...the 3 I've made so far are mainly from Kroot parts for that tall/skinny humanoid feel, the other 3 will be much bulkier muties.

Hey, a Gorkamorka revival thread!

That's a fething good idea!

Have you thought of using pig iron heads for the muties?

@ Hyenajoe - Do you mean these guys mate?
Spoiler:
No I hadn't, they're quite cool actually . I found a pic of the Kolony Feral HQ on the net and was using it for a reference but had no idea what they were or who made them 'till now...so thanks for that I'll stick with what I got though coz I don't like metal and they're quite similar in a lot of ways.

@ Matt.Kingsley - Nice one thank you I'll get working on the next update soon.

Yep, it was exactly these heads I had in mind!

Apart from the mutie raiders on snagga, was there any other muties models released ?

I have all the Gorkamorka rules on my laptop inluding Digganob. Very fun game and considering the Ork miniature range these days, well worth getting into again.

One thing, do we all agree that the Gorkamorka planet is in fact a Necron tomb world?

Yes, it was a tomb world (but when the game was released, no one knew what a tomb world could be )

Yes, just been flicking through the rulebooks... a necron skull is clearly visisble in the pic on page 17 of Da Uvver Book

EDIT - And for trivia fans, the Imperial name of the planet is Angelis

@ Flashman - Oh yeah thats right...theres also some hints in the Digga story section...something about "terror in the dark" under the pyramids that killed off all the Orks...great stuff!

Yes, and eventually all the Orks are wiped out by the Necrons. Lord Damocles over on Warseer created a timeline based on various snippets where Angelis gets a mention.

Aw man! Actually going a bit nuts at the mo with this project. I think Flamekebab will back me up here, but its sooooo hard finding the right parts to make believable Mutie Raiders!

Here's just a few of the stupid things issues I'm having making them ATM:

1. There isn't really a 40k race with suitable looking tech to represent the Muties weapons and armor. Although they are originally of human Imperial descent, slapping a bunch of IG stuff on them just doesn't cut it in my mind...Kroot gear is the closest I've found so far for a nice mix of high-tech meets rustic. However the catch is nothing else GW really looks like Kroot weapons...even other Tau weapons don't really look the same...

2. Muties come in two sizes. Snaga, tall/skinny, and Unks, fat/heavy. Problem here is what fits one size doesn't look right in the hands of the other! Guns are one thing but its really noticeable when it comes to Mutie CC weapons. They either looks too punny for the Unks or too thick and heavy for the Snaga...really annoying. I don't have the skills to scratch build weapons, I can do most other things to a passable standard but weapons are just too damn fiddly for me so need to keep searching GW kits for a happy medium?!

3. Similar to the above point but this time its their steeds...I've seen a lot of different minis used for these...I'm happy with my choice. My Snaga fit...just about, in terms of scale, but the parts I'd planned to make the Unks out of will look stupid on them...like a gorilla sat on a dog! Which means I'll have to custom build all of the Unks limbs to scale them down to a more plausible size for their mounts...so much extra work!

I knew there was a reason I'd put this lot "on hold" haha

I will get there but it seems like everytime I fix a problem another issue pops up! *sigh*

Ooh.... I may need to look into this game. Sounds very interesting!
The miniatures you have photographed look awesome! I am especially fond of the guy with the shield. Very Original!
... As for the Muties, you could try and mix in some WHFB Bretonnian Men-at-Arms/Empire Flagellant pieces, to help convey the rustic feel and look.
However, when it comes to those scaling issues, I'm not the guy to turn to. For the cc weapons, use the WHFB Bretonnian or Empire one, but for the guns you could just splice some lasguns to make them look different or try and mimic the Autogun look. Then, rap around some gause or GS, and wrap it around the gun, to imitate rags. Kroot weaponry may also work, as you mentioned before.

I'm afraid that's all I can really say.
Really nice progress so far though mate. Keep it up!

@ Joshua - Cheers for the kind words dude...have a look at my gallery for more custom stuff for other GW games if ya interested, the Orks on here are very basic builds.

Cheers for the advice, yeah as yet haven't used any WHFB bitz on them (well the steeds are from that range but ya know)

I'm ok for their bodies and robes/rags, I'll GS what I need for those. Sadly WHFB weapons are just too low tech in my mind, I'm trying to stick closely to the fluff. Most of them have a wooden element too and as Angelis is a dead desert planet there wouldn't be any (or very very little) and that would bug me haha! I'll go for Tau stuff and try to age it/de-tech it.

Could you post some WIPs of the Muties you're doing? I think the problem you're running into is that you keep trying to make them too different from one another. From what I can tell, you're trying to make Unks and Snagas as different as Orks and Eldar, when the difference is more like the difference between Humans and Tau. If you look at the image of the old Mutie models, look at the Unk with Demilume, and the Snaga with Caliver next to him. They both fit onto the same set of legs, its just that the Snaga body is a bit smaller width-wize. If you try and get some form of uniformity in the parts you use, itll help a lot. Like, try using the same legs for both Unks and Snagas.

Also, you could look at using 2 different kinds of mounts. They can both be horses, but there is a difference between the Elven and Chaotic warhorses.

If I had a dollar for every dollar I spent I'd have all my money back.

No problem mate! I see your point with the weapons, and I understand the dilemma your facing, but I'm sure your ideas will prove worthy.
It certainly sounds that way anyway!
Good luck with any future projects!
I'm looking forward to more updates!

So you need a few idea on how to make muties using only GW plastic components, no 3rd party, metal or finecast? Quite a challenge! Personally I love 3rd party stuff, companies like Puppetswar make awesome resin accessories.

Anywhoo looking at them I had a few ideas: fantasy battle zombie torsos and legs seem a good start. Chaos marauder legs are a bit less obvious but if you shave off the knee pads you are left with legs with just leggings and wraps around the shins. Unfortunately they still have a bit of an awkward pose.

Weapons are tricky, I thought the skaven range would have more options but not in plastic. The Island of Blood engineer has a cool gun. The 'caliver' in the picture of the original models looks like the old style plastic lasrifle that rogue trader era squats and imperial guard used. The glaive looks like an old style chaos chainaxe, the demilume looks a bit like a power axe with a scratch built blade.

I totally understand about not wanting to use wood-based weapons, I had the same issue with my Necro stuff. The plastic flagellant kit has some nice crude weapons with hafts that don't look wooden. One cool weapon I discovered is the haft from an axe with the top cut off and replaced with one of the nuts+bolts from an ork weapon, just looks like an iron bar club. I have a Goliath armed with part of an engine block strapped to a two handed staff as a giant club. It's not so bad making your own weapons so long as they don't need to be uniform.

(I am totally going to have to get some of these items into Necro, sounds like these demilumes and glaives have cool rules)

@ Brotheralexos - Cheers mate, sound advice, yeah I'm taking that kind of approach now...I was just venting my frustrations...some WIPs will be up in next few days.

@ Brother SRM - Thanks dude! Not painting much TBH but will get round to them at some stage...I enjoy building more, quicker results

@ Rogue - Cheers mate, yeah I actually enjoy GM more then Necromunda in a lot of ways but got swept up in 'Munda first so left this lot 'till now...

@ Bruticus - I do/will use 3rd party stuff, these guys will have some Maximini stuff in the mix...I use resin, but never metal and not finecast (where at all posible!)

Skaven stuff is a good idea mate, thanks...I didn't really look at those...Well got all parts now for their bodies, steeds are sorted, guns I think I'll be ok with now, but still unsure which chain weapons to use for their Glaives?

Everything GW is so race-specific...if I could find some plain-ish medium sized chain axes that could be altered into 1h and 2h varities, space marine sized that would be perfect...hmmmm

I have a whole load of random chain axes but I'm not entirely sure where they are from. I think they are various generations of chaos chain axe, either from old plastic chaos space marine sprues, chaos terminators or berserker sprues. Forgeworld also sell some chain axes separately if you need a bunch.

But if you are ok with 3rd party stuff, maybe these: http://www.anvilindustry.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=60_88&product_id=144
