I created this thread a long time ago when i first started construction on this gate, and now, enthusiasm has struck me again, so I am going to revive the thread.

High Elf Phoenix Gate- I am building this thing to be fought over in real games, and I want it to be huge, other than that I had no real guidelines for how it was going to look.

I will be updating this thing regularly and hopefully finishing the whole thing before September!

I have three problems right now that I could use help in solving, pretty please:
1. Any suggestions in how to paint white rock/bricks and make it look good?
2. I'd like feedback on how the battlements should look. I want them to be functional, but still high-elfy!
3. I want to paint a giant phoenix on the gate itself. Inspiration and tips appreciated here!

This picture has been my inspiration for may of the features, although my original drawings, (see above) were made before I saw it!

Seems interesting, if i recall correctly the old high elf codex might have a picture of one of the gates, on the same page as a short story about Tyrion.

Alright well here's some general photos of the work. I still have some statues part way through construction. Comments are welcome!

Here is the main gate section with models for scale purposes.

This is the cliff, the idea is that one the whole thing is completed, this cliff goes up against one edge of the table, and the same on the other side.

Overall picture to give an idea of the full project.

This is how the wall piece with the cliff, and the main gate, connect. I used a series of magnets and large pins.

Inside the gatehouse. The archway in the back is going to be sculpted and painted to look like a magical portal, allowing access to an otherwise inaccesible building.

Top-down on the whole set-up.

Alright, here is the latest update, and WIP step-by-step pictures of making the second cliff!

Firstly, I glued together three sheets of polystyrene...

After a day or so under pressure, I had a solid piece of foam I could carve a mountain out of!

Here is my humble bread knife, the weapon with which I would wage war on the mountain until it resembled what I wanted it to resemble!

I then preceded to slowly shape the block, first rounding it out, and then creating spires of rock.

After all the carving, this is what I had carved off!

And after a little spackle and sandpaper, the finished cliff:

Here is the to-do list for today and the next, I'll be back tonight with an update! (below the list is a quick sketch of how I hope to make the battlements)

Alright, so update on what I did today! I decided I need to make some buttresses more for decoration than anything, and to hide the unseemly gaps between the bricks! I'll put two small ones on each side of the wall on each side of the gate so that means I need to make 8! I cut out four today:

And then experimented with one to see if i could make a shape similar to my inspirational picture (a few posts above). Here's the result! I think with a good sanding and some spackle it'll be perfect.

I also cut a bunch of bricks out of card to glue to the sides of the wall for texture.

And glued them on:

Tomorrow, I will carve the other three buttresses, make some more bricks, and put some sand and rocks on my cliff! Stay tuned.

Alright, sorry for the lull, but I just returned from a backpacking trip in Isle Royale NP. I'm gonna be working like a madman in the coming days, so updates will keep coming!

Sounds like a good reason to go on break.

Really enjoy terrain logs, especially well-done ones from scratch using cheap materials. Best of luck to you, it looks great so far and I'll be watching!

Alright, after a few days of cleaning up the workspace, my hobby-ing is again in full swing. Just to give you good people assurance that I haven't abandoned you, here are four finished buttresses for the wall! More updates to follow!

Alrighty, another quick update!

A lot of the work I'm doing atm is not very photogenic! I doubt you could even tell the difference, so here is something slightly more obvious! Using a choice selection of only the finest gravel found near my backyard, I applied a liberal coating of white glue, sprinkled the gravel, and voila!

This is ambitious project and I approve. I love seeing how these turn out.

Okay last update for today. (I think). Rear side of the right wall section has been bricked. Up next, making the next four buttresses and beginning to create the battlements.

I still need to buy a MDF board to make a base for this monster, I think it will help everything stay level and connect better, as well as giving me some space to put decorative statues and such.

Here's the work from today, (admittedly, it's not exciting at all):

Ladies and Gentlemen, here we are with the latest update! I have been hard at work making the buttresses presentable after cutting them out of polystyrene by hand. So needless to say there was much spackling and sanding. Also, I have cut out a few test pieces for the battlements. These individual bits are below:

Now I put everything together for a checkpoint look, to give you all, and myself (mostly myself) an idea of where I am, and what needs to be done next. Picture:

Now for the TO DO LIST:

-Cut out and glue more bricks. (as you can see there is some pink stuff showing on the walls, and the backside is worse)

-Attach the buttresses. Two on each side of the gate, front and back. Eight total. These will cover up some of the imperfections (I hope).

-FInish the battlements. This will also entail putting a surface on the top of the walls.

-Big 'ol base. I'm going to pick up a handy 4'x2' piece of MDF and fasion it into a nice little base to hold everything together more nicely.

-Decorations/Fixes. I need some plastic rods and such to fill gaps and make the bottom of the wall flush to the base. Im going to make some statues of elves and horses to put on the base as well.

IF and WHEN I get all of that done I'll have to take a step back and see where I am! The hardest part of any project is always figuring out when to stop, am I right? Until next time, TTFN.
