Lesser Daemon of Chaos

Hey everybody, I started a Necron army and wanted to to do something a little different. I decided on a Steampunk / Victorian theme for several reasons. First, such a theme would allow me to do a lot of conversion work (something that apparently is pretty rare in Necron armies). Additionally, the steampunk look would give me an excuse to get away from the classic black/silver/green look Necrons typically use. Plus, I'm really drawn to the ramshackle look to a lot of steampunk creations and I think it could blend well with some of the Necron vehicle profiles and hull-shapes. There's not too much fluff behind these guys other than that they're an assembly production (though I haven't quite decided whether it should be a commercial operation or more of an evil genius' army... any suggestions or thoughts?) Either way, the Army's name makes an acronym of NECRON: Non-Electronic Combustion Robots of Notorious Sociability. Needless to say, they're all gentlemen. Enough of an introduction: ON WITH THE ARMY PICS!

First up are some basic warrior designs. I haven't decided how to model a Guass Flayer yet. The FAMAS looking design is pretty neat, though I'm thinking about going with the more basic look to save a LOT of time! Thoughts?
Please excuse the poor picture quality... I'm planning to shoot more soon.

Here's my first Destroyer. At this point, I haven't quite settled on how to base the army so some generic ruins won't lock me into anything yet. I tried to make an engine on the back, complete with a smokestack for steam. Additionally, I threw on some gears, levers, pipes, etc. to bring it together. What do you all think so far?

Thanks! I really like him too. I'll probably make the rest of the Warriors match him but I'm open to advice/critique/suggestions.
Here's that Destroyer primed. It's amazing how just a simple base-coat unifies the whole look. Painting soon to come!

Wow good work man, I like both types of guns and I think it would be cool if you made each trooper slightly different, like a ramshackle bunch or robots.
I would maybe advise adding a more red or dark bronze on the destroyer, it looks a little flat with too much gold, not bringing enough attention to your cool conversions.
=) Automatically Appended Next Post: I also think they would benefit from a little rusting up, but that's cause I like rusty things

Those are all great suggestions.
I never thought to make all of the Warriors look slightly different but, you're right, it would create more of a Ramshackle theme.
Also, in better light the gold looks a lot more worn-down and corroded. I start with a base coat of Desert Yellow and heavily dry brush on some Gold paint, then wash it twice with a Sepia color. Overall, the shiny parts are few and far between but, by catching some light and glimmering, it makes the rest of the model look old and faded. I may add some dark orange or brown corrosion spots to make the effect even more pronounced, though.

Nice! I really like the idea, especially the warrior with the Big Daddy helmet! I'm following your CSM too - LOVE YOUR STUFF!
As some constructive critisism I think a bit more colour variation might be nice... maybe some... I dunnow

Next up is a Tesla Immortal. I used the basic Warrior model and converted it up, making it a bit bulkier. I threw on a CSM backpack (upside down) and some other parts to resemble some sort of power source for the tesla carbine. Also, I used really thin wire to wrap and twist around the front end of the gun which, when it's finished, should look like electric energy pouring out.
What do you think?

Next up is a Monolith. I really want this to be the centerpiece of the army. Of course, it's gotta be a big, flying fortress of mechanical doom!
To start, I know I want to make it as Victorian as possible. I'm thinking a bridge on the back like a pirate ship, maybe with some stained-glass windows. Also, there's going to be a wrap-around deck towards the top of the model to allow the Robots to patrol, giving the whole thing a much more "ship" feel. On each corner of this deck will be a Guass gunner shooting a mounted gun (instead of the Guass cannons sticking out of holes).
Not sure what to do about the Eternity Gate nor the Huge gun on the top deck. I would like to make a multi-tiered deck with some stairs and railing.
Any other suggestions?

For the eternity gate, you could add a portcullis with a steam winch ro open/close it, and then maybe try a trick of false perspective for the gate itself. A very very long tunnel vanishing into the distance complete with pipes and gears.
For the particle whip you could go for a simple large gun with armoured shield, the victorian era did after all see the rise of the ironclads and pre-dreadnaught battleships. and not to forget speaking tubes on the different levels for ease of communication.
Awesome work by the way

^ i agree with this guy, IG basilisks are basically the same as WW2 cannons so mabye you could pick up one of those for it, you could also use the IG peices to make it look more steampunky and add treads to it and stuff

Those are really great ideas; I'll have to steal a few for this Monolith!
Finished a bit more on the Monolith:
The back-end will basically be a cabin for the whole vehicle. I'm thinking about running an LED in the center of it so the windows on the back will glow... maybe even making an interior scene and just having transparent windows.
Also, I made a raised platform in the center to create a multi-level deck, though there's still a LOT of work to be done!
