Subject: Bolt Action News - Warlord & Italieri Partner for BA Vehicles (p. 15)
Bolt Action's mistake was to use 1/56 for their vehicles. If they had gone with 1/48, there was already a good range of WW2 models on the market from Tamiya and other companies.
What part was the mistake? They are selling their own kits by the truckload and making money hand over fist. There's also people using 1/48 kits.
cool. now show me a picture of an operational sherman with as much track sag as the kit.
I found a few
Spoiler:
Point being, I don't think it matters that much.

Looks very high quality, similar to the plastic T34, without a ton of fiddly parts. Additionally, looks like slide core tooling on the barrel. The instruction sheet looks very familiar to the other vehicle plastics instructions, lending credence to the "Italeri was doing Bolt Action plastic vehicles all along" rumor.
Yeah, I'm gonna have to pick one up.

Ooh, solid track links instead of separate ones. I wish other companies did that with their kits.
Quality wise it doesn't look too indifferent to Tamiya's kits, but being a smaller thing that's a complement. Still, I'm really too much of a fan of 1/48th to be too interested in 1/56th (they just look so titchy). =/

The mistake is they could have produced more 1/48 scale kits for vehicles that were not yet available, instead of which we get a Sherman, for which there are many different options already on the market in several already available scales.
I am thinking from a user's point of view, of course.
Just make a damn Sherman with a nuclear catapult strapped to its turret mount. Warlord did make a few weird war pieces for halloween, but be nice if they went off and expand that into a full, realistically visualised, range. Die Waffenkammer's already at it. Don't let the competition step ahead!
...Of course my stand point's coming from someone who doesn't play historics at all. Not enough lasers involved.

Maybe if Warlord was starting a brand new miniatures line... but they bought Bolt Action miniatures, and they've bought other companies 1/56 resin vehicles, and produce their own. They now have at least a hundred 1/56 resin vehicles, and already several plastic 1/56 vehicles and tanks. They're converting their resin line to plastic. If they were to just switch to 1/48... well, that'd be dumb, I'd then have to buy more from other 1/56 manufacturers like Die Waffenkammer.
Now, if I have an opponent that wants to do 1/48, that's fine with me, their vehicles are way bigger so they're easier to get LOS on. If they want to use 1/48 figures (40mm scale) as well, that's also cool, again, easier to hit. I personally have been playing a lot of DAK recently and Perry Afrikakorps 28mm figs look like Hobbits next to 1/48, so I'm pretty happy I own 1/56 Sd.Kfz's and Panzers for them.
I'm almost wondering if there's more choice in 1/56 than 1/48 at this point, as 1/48 isn't too well supported in the scale modeling community but 1/56 now has several hobby companies manufacturing kits...

For the rest of April from today, every order we receive will be entered into a prize draw to win our huge Pegasus Bridge battle set! Loads of people were drooling over this stonking kit at Salute over the weekend, so we thought we’d give everyone a chance to get their hands on one. Every order from today (Monday 14th April) till the end of the month will be entered in the draw, so if you place multiple orders that will increase your chances even further! The winner will get their prize in May. Good luck!

Tamiya have 75 ground (i.e. not aircraft) kits in 1/48 scale, all WW2 I think, though that includes things like scenery and figures. Some other companies like Ace Model, AFV Club, Hasegawa and Hobby Boss are also doing 1/48 scale vehicles. There is some overlap of types.
This is just my personal perspective -- I can't help feeling some of the richness and variety available has been spread out between different scales, leading to a dilution of effort. If you want to play WW2, there is now a choice of 1/300 = 6mm, 1/100 = 15mm, 1/72 = 20mm, 1/56 = 28mm and 1/48. If the effort had been concentrated in three scales -- small, medium and large -- we would by now have a better variety available in each scale.

I do wargame with model kit vehicles instead of GW bricks and so far no problems.
Also Tamiya markets some Italeri kits under their own brand here in Japan so they must consider them up to their own quality standards to do so.

The 1/48 Tamiya kits have a metal base part and are very sturdy also they are quite cheap for Tamiya, the only problem is that they are slightly larger. But it not an issue IMHO.
Historicon: Special Lieutenant Dick Winters miniature
Here’s a first look at the special miniature we have made for Historicon this year – Lieutenant Dick Winters. Made famous as the main character in the TV show Band of Brothers, Major Winters was the highly decorated commander of ‘Easy Company’, part of the US 101st Airborne Division, during World War II.
As the theme of this year’s Historicon is ‘Large Wars, Small Soldiers’ and it’s a landmark 30th anniversary for America’s premier wargaming show, we knew we had to produce something special.
We found reference to Lt Winters’ dog tags and decided these would make a great display base for the model with the upper dog tag also holding the show details. Of course, for those wishing to field the model in games of Bolt Action he can easily be placed on a 25mm round base of your choice.
Our model is sculpted by Wojtek and depicts him marshalling his troops during the textbook assault on the German guns positions at Brecourt Manor.
For more information on attending the show and getting your hands on this splendid miniature, look no further than here!

They stopped doing that, these days they do 1:48 tanks with plastic hulls with four metal weights instead for the extra weight.

Mathieu Raymond wrote: Otherwise I just saw that Tamiya has a Universal Carrier 1/48 kit. Would that be too big for a 60mm base?
Edited for clarity.
60mm? What are Sentinel's mounted on? 50mm round? Lemme see. My 1/48 BA-64b fits on a Sentinel base, barely, with the rims of its wheels going over the edges. I have a bunch of scout cars, but no Bren Gun carrier, but I think that the carrier was just a bit larger than those (checks wikipedia for measurements). So like the BA-64B it'll overhang on a 50mm, but with the added space of a 60mm you'll have more leeway.
My latest sentinels were on 60mm bases. I didn't even know 40K did 50mm bases.
I went to my LMS (Local Modelling Store, and no, they ain't exactly friendly) and found one of those Russian Scout Car, but no Bren Gun Carriers. I'll try it with a spare autocannon barrel.

Oh they must be on 60mm round bases then. I just mixed up the sizes. So like I said, the model will overhang a little. The carrier has more forward projection than a BA-65b so it may be more obvious.

Great thread. I just picked up the Perry Afrika Korps and a couple of Warlord plastic SdKfz 251's as my intro to this game.
Pairing with Italeri makes a lot of sense. Most of you don't seem to realise that Italeri had been producing 1:72 scale 'easy assembly' plastic armour kits for wargaming for some time. They are simple, but relatively well detailed and do the job well. Cost will have been a big factor; I'm sure none of the big Japanese manufacturers would have been interested.
I think the track sag on the M4 is quite deliberate, and is there for dramatic effect. A bit too dramatic, perhaps, and not entirely accurate, but it looks more interesting than a straight track run. That's what wargaming models are about - it's why most of them have oversized heads (because the face is the focal point). It's certainly better than Warlord's own SdKfz 251, which represents one of the least produced versions (Ausf C with riveted hull).
It looks as though the initial releases will focus on the Normandy campaign. Hopefully they'll branch out. It would be really nice if, when they come to the Panzer III, we get an earlier version and not the inevitable Ausf M.

Wasn't there talk of them wanting to do a weird war suppliment at some point recently? I vaguely recall it being mentioned back when they discussed their ongoing plans for BA along with the armoured suppliment and campaign books
There is a Normandy (or was it European themed?) campaign book on the way, followed by an armoured supplement later this year for those who want to replay stuff like Kursk and whatnot.

I'm not sure about a supplement, but I do know that the Weird War minis from Clockwork Goblin Miniatures are getting rules compatible with BA. So I'm definitely going to be using walkers with my future USMC army. Not to mention that it looks like vampires are in the works too, though for what faction I don't know.
Germans get zombies, Soviets get power armor guys, and the British get robots. There's a heavy walker tank that's coming out soon, too.

And what do the Americans receive? Davy Crockett armed troops? ^^
Ok, I just want some mainstream miniatures manufacturer who makes man/vehicle portable nuclear weapons. Pity nobody really makes nuclear age cold war boardgames (or that nobody was stupid enough to use nuclear weapons in any engagements in the real world. Sad really).

Woops, forgot to mention the Walker is for the American troops. They are releasing more walkers so I doubt the Americans are the only ones with walker love.
@Wyrmalla- Also, a quick google search turned this up.
