What are peoples opinions on the Soul Blaze special rule? Specifically in the new CSM Squads using the Icon of Flame and on Chaos LR and Havoc Rhinos using Warpflame gargoyles?

In your squads, doing the chainsword tango

I love how in these threads the OP rarely expresses their OWN thoughts on the subject...

It's nifty when you already have it, but CSM need to a MoT to get it. Is it worth it? not really

On vehicles, though, a dakkapred might get some juice out of it. 2 HB's an AC and havoc launcher should put some wounds on infantry, then a 50% chance to burn them next turn

Yeah, the need to take a MoT on an infantry squad first before getting IoF kinda sucks since a 6++ save isn't much use.
However, I'm trying out a Heavy Bolter x4 Havoc Squad which will put out a good number of wounds on GEQ squads and plenty of weapons to cause Soul Blaze next turn

Edit: I mean leave Soul Blaze on the squad next turn

Not worth paying any points for. A 50% chance it does nothing. If it doesn't go out before inflicting any damage you get 1-3 Bolter hits (that at least ignore cover). So on average you'll kill 1 Ork Boy. It then repeats at the end of the next turn, but odds are good it's not going to last more than a couple of turns.

Haven't played a 6th edition game yet so I have no experience with Soul Blaze other than how it looks on paper.

That's why I decide not to use it with some heavy bolters, after the MoT and the Icon it cost 35 for a 10-man squad.

This was were I thought it could have some use. It would make the LR at least a little better against infantry and it could do a lot of damage when you have 4-6 Havoc Launchers.

60 points for a dakka rhino with 2 combi bolters, gargoyles, and a havok doesn''t seem bad. Sure soul blaze is a mediocre ability, but look at the price. The gargoyles are so cheap that it actually seems like a good deal.

I could also see it being taken on thousand sons or mot terminators, but even the banner costs 3 times as much as the gargoyles for the exact same damage caused by soul blaze. Not really worth it for the points.

MoT + Banner on a unit without an invo to gain soul blaze=bad idea. It's throwing away points on mediocre abilities.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

@ Schadenfruede - Apologies, your right

I've rearanged my Havoc because 15 points for a 0.6 or less average wound on GEQ from Soul Blaze isn't worth it

I tried a unit of four heavy bolters with the mark and icon, and ive got to say it was fun to use. It most likely is not the best use of points but it was fun burning a grey knight strike squad.

Thoughts:
Terrible!

How to make it better:
Allow for multiple tokens to be on a squad! If you could just DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA a squad and score 4 wounds on some Grey Knights, then add four counters, then yeah, that would be super cool.

OR

Keep it as one marker per squad, but it works all of the time, none of this 4+ crap.

OR

Just even to make it slightly better, why not let them add mutiple tokens that you roll one at a time. As soon as one actually works, remove all of the tokens.

As it is now, it is a near useless rule.

soul blaze is terrible. It might add an extra wound against Geq but takes up too much time and effort to be worth it.

It does too little, has too big a chance of not working, and doesn't stack. I mean, I can see an army that uses it, and tries to split fire and land it on as many enemy units each turn as possible. I don't think it will be especially strong, but it could be entertaining.

But in the end, here is the main problem: Even if you consistently land it on the enemy, it does about the same over the course of a game as you might get just from buying some extra guys with bolters - and those guys can do other stuff as well.

So even in a situation where you might want it, I can see pretty much no reason why you wouldn't just buy some extra marines instead.

I think for vehicles and walkers at 5 points, it's worth it, conferring the rule to every weapon.
I fully intend to put Warpflame Gargoyles on my Defilers, Land Raider, and if I get any Rhinos, on those too!

5 points, for the chance of a few extra wounds on a squad. I think warpflame gargs aren't terrible at all.

The rule itself is not game-changing or scary at all, but it's a nice little bonus, it can keep on killing a squad even after your own guys are dead.

I think it's only worth getting on a vehicle if you have 5 points spare. If it kills 1 or 2 extra models a game it's paid for itself.

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."
