If you look in the rule book in the weapons section, it will explain this in detail. I can't because I dont want to get into trouble with the mods. But the book defines what a sniper is and how it works.

You will find it explained in the main rulebook on page 42, under the Sniper rule.

Please do not substitute asking on the forum for reading your rulebook.

Everything GW publishes for standard 40k, including codices, supplements, Forge World, and White Dwarf, is part of the game. You can choose not to play with or against any of them, but don't pretend that your choice is anything but a house rule.

Could you give us a little more information about your problem? When you come here and ask questions like "Hey what's this I don't get it???" it makes you look like you haven't made any effort to seek out the answer except to ask Dakka for rules wholesale (which is against the rules).

You should check your main rulebook for the answer to your question, especially the section on the Sniper rule, under Special Rules. If you are still confused, then you should probably re-read the entire rulebook.

If you're still confused after that, come back and ask again, explaining in detail what you don't understand.

EDIT: Ninja'd hard.

it can blow up tanks because of its high value

5 scout snipers fire at the back of a tank with armor value 10 and you roll 3 sixs to hit 1 6 and 1 5 you have tank wrecked and aditional 1 dg on glance

Why are we suddenly assuming that you roll all 6s?

So what? A bolter can blow up a tank if you assume you roll all 6s, that doesn't change the fact that both bolter and sniper rifles are absolutely worthless for killing vehicles.

The chance to score a 6 with 3/3 shots is 1 in 216.
The chance to score a 6 with 5/5 shots is 1 in 7776.
So its rather unlikely to happen a lot.

Guess you don't know what weapons with Sniper do on a To Wound roll of a 6, then?

Of course I know about rending, my point is that he's assuming "I roll all 6s" to "prove" that sniper rifles can be effective against vehicles, which is a ridiculous assumption.

Well let's be honest. Outside of a cheap scoring unit for marines (Scout Snipers)

I don't see any use to ever take a sniper rifle other than for fun.

I'd love to field 30 ratlings, just to do it. In what would have to be a hilariously casual game.
