WHO R DEZ BOYZ?
The grot rebelz are a fully converted Imperial Guard army and has been one of my most successful converted army projects proving very popular at tournaments due to the seer character in the army, even when my painting skills were less than average. The army got rebuild a few years ago with a total of 18 tanks and 66 infantry and now I'm back for another rebuild.

DERE BACK AND DIZ TIME IT'S WAAAGH!
After 6th edition game out my mechanized grot guard army ran into a lot of difficulties mainly due to the army being designed for driving up at close quarters, so I decided to focus on my thousand sons (grey knight) army instead. Now with that project complete (for the moment) I'm eager to improve the grots both with a better army list and with the painting skills I've learnt since their last rebuild.

WAT TO EXPECT...
Organised Chaos: I feel the previous grots were a bit too clean so I'll be using weathering powders on the tanks and adding some battle damage to the infantry's armour.

Grot Gunz: No greenskin would find a lasgun a satisfying weapon as it doesn't have the same feel and sound as a solid round gun so the grot infantry will instead be armed with Sub Machine Guns which I'll be converting very soon. Plus a few other conversions for grenade launchers and autocannons.

A Big Zappy Fence: I'm going to convert a defence line made up of Tesla coils joined by wires running through the ground.

Ork Botz: As soon as the ally rules appeared I knew I'd have some fun with these and thus will be working on some allies to join the grots. Later I may add some tau weaponry/allies to my army, but for the moment I'm working on the Ork Botz.
now I thought of ork slaves but expected an ork would likely try and kill the grots regardless of any threats such as a shock or explosive collar. So instead the grot docs and meks would turn ork prisoners into ork botz; the equivalent of a greenskin servitor. I'll spearheading my army with a group of ork botz representing a unit of nob bikers, but who to lead these brutal cybork slaves?

KOLONEL GROTSKULL'S NEW GEAR!
I would need a warboss biker to lead the ork allies and considered making a bigger ork slave cybork from a starter set rat ogre with Kolonel Grotskull riding in a pod on it's back piloting it. But when that didn't work I played with a few ideas and came up with something bigger, badder and better; THE WARBOT!

The warbot is more like a battlesuit than a killa kan with Kolonel Grotskull piloting it and taking great joy in it's destructive power. The design was inspired by a youtube animation called 'Teamformers' and it was converted using Killa Kan, Sentinel, Scout Biker and a few other bitz. However while the combi-skotcha and power klaw are represented I need to represent the biker's dakka cannons so I'll be converting a tau drone to escort the warbot later on.

I wanted this to be the first model completed as it will likely serve as the army's centerpiece, that and I'll be entering into a painting competition at Warhammer World next month.

I look forward to hearing your feedback on my conversions and hope you'll be interested in following this project log.

Followed the previous two rounds as a lurker, I`ll try to contribute in a better way this round

What style of IG army are you aiming for? Threadhead or Aircav spam (or gork/mork forbid a footslogging infantery list dug in )? Even if the current sensible build is aircav spam I vote for armoured coy with veterans. Use hydras for AA.

The warbot look fantastic but if he`s count-as warbiker he`s on the wrong base. Use a 40mm square base as the center and the cut a normal 40mm round base in two and glue on each end of the square one. If it`s 60mm the method still stands.

Looks goood, awesome concept and clever conversion for the grot guardsmens. I agree with you that they should get a bit dirtyer and need more orky (or grotty) weapons. Good luck on that!

Looking good! Time to refresh my grots as well I guess. I love that warbot, the cc arm in particular is a very nice use of the killa kan arm.

KEEP DEM ROLLIN!
Most of my tanks are being shelved due to their lack of effectiveness in games now, but I'll be touching up a few tanks with sponging and weathering powders for the new army.

2 Doom-Vees (Chimeras)
These converted tanks were my pride and joy created from a leman russ upgrade sprue, plasticard, wheels from a poundland toy and a few other bitz. I created 5 fire points in the form of the windows on the side and front, plus the heavy flamer underneath. Each Doom-Vee transport had a different set of cargo and lookout grot and we're the core of the old army.

1 Battle Bruzer (Leman Russ Demolisher)
The army will also include a Leman Russ Demolisher. Back when I originally made the grots the Leman Russ was the most difficult tank to come up with a good conversion for. I want to convert everything so I tried to do a half track using a pair of shortened chimera tracks and a large pair of wheels and it failed. The tracks turned out to be too long so I had no where to fit the wheels on, however they were just the right length to replace the leman russ tracks themselves.

I later converted it into a plasma russ with some tesla like energy weapons which are a risky investment in 6th edition, but given that the main barrel is converted from a demolisher turret perhaps I should keep the barrel rather than go with a boring basic demolisher turret?

2 ThundaSquig Gunships (Vendettas)
Of course the flyers are staying in the army, in the form of my 2 Thunda Squig gunships!
Based on an Osprey the engines are made out of Manticore missiles with the hell strike missiles from the Valkyrie underneath them, throw in some extra bits and some plasticard and you have a Osprey Vendetta conversion. The engines and weapons are magnetised so can be moved about the bottom one being it going at full speed and the middle left representing it not moving at all. Also has a small grotcopter escort to represent the optional heavy bolter sponsons.

There is one more tank but I'm considering redoing the conversion, I'll upload that at a later date but with luck the fully painted Warbot conversion will be done before then.

DIZ IS A STOREE BOUT HOW DA GROTZ STARTIN REBELLIN!
One of my biggest achievements regarding the grot rebels was the creation of a background comic, I knew a written story wouldn't be read that much so I wanted to create a eye catching comic instead but I wasn't talented enough to do anything impressive with my rough drawn version. But I was lucky enough to get accomplished 40k comic artist Nacho Fernadez to draw up the final as his cartoonish art style was the perfect match for the wacky grots! I later coloured the final copies to create "DA GROT UPRISIN" comic. Here are the first 3 pages of the grot's backstory and I'll upload the other pages later in the log.

GROT REBELZ BIG AND SMALL!
I've been thinking of how to make the grots look less organised cause at the moment they look very 'rank and file' and I'd prefer the new ones looked more like mobs and warbands. I considered painting their clothing different shades of brown and grey so it looks like the grot gets given his armour and gun and that's it.

But I then had a better idea which is to add more variety to grot guard conversions in the squads. So along side the main grot trooper conversions there's gonna be beefier grots using catachan bitz, plus a few smaller grots using this 'groundpounder' conversion concept I created to use as infantry platoon guardsmen next to my veterans.

So the veteran squads will be made up of a mixture of these grots all painted in the same colours with maybe a few different shades.

What do you think?

GATHERIN DA GROT CLANZ? (IDEAS?)
As I mentioned I want to make the Grots a bit more green this time, meaning less looking like an organised guard army and more like a chaotic greenskin horde. I plan to have the veteran squads feature 3 to 4 variants of converted grot but still be recognizable as 1 squad, then over the weekend I had another idea.

Each squad will be a clan/gang of grot rebelz lead by a head honcho, basically what this means is each squad will have a their own logo, name and be modeled to show their own personality while remaining similar to the other veteran squads (they will all have the same equipment). Here's some ideas of clanz I came up with over Easter...

Name: Da Deff Diggaz
Wot dey do best: They dig anything from trenches to places to hide but love making pit traps for Orkz to fall in.
Appearance: Very dirty and armed with spades and pickaxes.

Name: Da Booty Huntaz
Wot dey do best: They love to loot and get the best bitz.
Appearance: Pirate hats, peck legs, eye patches and other small details.

Name: Da Boom Blastaz or Boom Bringaz? (what do you think? feel free to suggest a more explosive based name.)
Wot dey do best: BLOW STUFF UP!
Appearance: Most of the squad will have scars and look crazy plus all will be carry some form of explosives.

Name: Da Black Squigz
Wot dey do best: Follow Kapin Squigscream's orders and remain disciplined.
Appearance: Like well trained commandos.

Would anyone like to suggest another idea for a grot clan (name, appearance and skill) remember keep it grotty?

WEATHERING POWDER TROUBLES
The Warbot is painted up and just need a bit of weathering powder on the wheel thou I'm currently looking for some rubbing/surgical alcohol to coat it with to set it in place as suggest by most online tutorials. Problem is finding the stuff, gonna continue my search in town tomorrow. So with luck my next upload will be the completed Warbot!

KOLONEL GROTSKULL'S NEW SUIT!
Well here it is Kolonel Grotskull's new killy Warbot, took me over a week to paint but damn it looks dead ard!

I used sponging to add battle scratches to the armour and decided to give him glowing eyes which work a lot better than if I had left them dark. I also added the little details such as a Warboss kill count on the right shoulder and Grotskull spelt in Ork Glyphs on the left.
Of course his real base will be a 40mm biker base but that hasn't arrived so I use an old resin base for the miniature competition on Monday at Warhammer World.

WEATHERING POWDERS; ZOG IT!
Aside from trying to get the model damn near perfect I was also waiting for some forgeworld weathering powders to arrive. They did and I tried them out on a wheel sprue and I must say despite using a few different techniques I wasn't too pleased with any of the results. So instead I choose to use basic drybrushing rather than risk ruining the model. Hopefully I can arrange a small lesson on how to get the best out them while at Warhammer World tomorrow.

SUM BAD NEWS!
Sadly I'll be putting the grots aside for a while to work on converting some legio cybernetica robots for my Pre-Heresy Thousand Sons using the new forgeworld bots into suitable battlesuit proxies. So it maybe a while longer before you see another post on this log.

PROMOTION DEN DEPORTATION!
Well I've sold all my old Grot Rebel Squads and I'm ready to begin rebuilding the new and improved squads from scratch. Of course I wasn't going to part with neither of my existing Grot Generals; Grotskull Or Squigscream so I offered to create this special commander for the buyer to add to the command squad.

It also proved a good way to practice applying all the new skills I've recently acquired to my grot conversions. Next I plan to paint up the 3 types of grot that will make up each of the mobs to see if they work or not, hopefully you won't have to wait too long for those.

My Pre-Heresy Thousand Sons are finally done, so without further a do it's time to get this project rolling again...

THE NEW, MORE GREENER GROTZ!
One of the biggest problems with all of my previous grot rebel armies was they were too uniform and more like guard than greenskins, so after selling all my old squads I plan to make all the new infantry look more like greenskins.

First off is their appearance, I've been experimenting with other ways to convert other grots and created two more variants; the grunt (middle) who is converted from some Night goblin legs and high elf torso, then using a catachan upper body and skaven legs with cadian feet I created the brute (right). The squads will be made up of random assortment of these 3 types.
Also what greenskin would want to use a laser weapon with no kick or real boom, so I've converted the lasguns into a variety of sub-machine guns and rifles, each of which will be made to look a little different from the rest.

Each squad will be made to look like a small clan with a symbol and detail modeled on the entire squad so going from the left...
The Troopa is from the "Metal Eadz" clan who believe themselves to be a bit tuffer than other grots so they all wear helmets and wear a bit more extra armour.
The Grunt is from the "Boom Blastas" a clan that love explosions so every member of that squad will have some form of grenade or bomb on them, like the grot in the photo who has a missile in a pouch on his back.
The Brute is from the "Deff Diggaz who love to dig holes, trenches and set traps so all of them carry some form of digging equipment and will be drybrushed a bit more to make them look dirtier than the other squads.

What do you think?
