With my Sisters of Battle army finished off I have started on painting my collected Daemons. As some of you might recognise I was collecting daemons while painting Sisters (heresy).

I'd loved the daemons back in 2nd edition when I started but I never got around to collecting and painting. As a random project I picked up a metal Bloodthirster about a year ago to assemble/paint (many pins) and it got the ball rolling. Before I knew it I had many kilograms of metal daemons in boxes. Now they get painted.

My goal was simple: an all-metal daemon army with mostly old models. It will include every god and almost every model/unit. I'm probably going to substitute a hellcannon for a skullcannon. I still have to think for a proper oldskool metal substitute for a Soul Grinder though... I'm expecting it to take at least a year to paint everything I already have.

First I'm starting with the Khorne contingent:

To start off, the Bloodthirster:

I painted this a year ago and wanted to continue the color scheme for the rest. For my squad of Bloodletters I tried 2 things, a dark and a light base colour. Khorne Red and Blood Red respectively. Test pieces as it were.

Bloodletter with dark base:

After a red wash I dry-brushed it to create highlights.

Bloodletter with light base:

I gave it multiple red washes to darken the light red.

They aren't finished yet (corrections, especially the eyes) but I'm curious... the light red gives a more old 'Eavy Metal feel, but the dark one feels more Grimdark.

Comments are welcome. I'll be updating this thread as I work my way through nearly 250 metal models.

Some more progress:

I have decided to split the 20 'letters I have into 2x10, but keep the paint scheme almost the same (so I can use it as 2 squads or 1 big squad). A 2nd squad of (2x10) bloodletters will be the slightly less old metal models that were released after these.

Nearly done:

The next 10 will be slightly darker in colour, so that I can split them if needed. After that I still have a command group to paint.

After that, more awaits:

Next 10 bloodletters in progress:

This time I started with Khorne Red and Washed it twice to darken/redden it. Tomorrow I'll start drybrushing to lighten it up again.

I've also started work on some Flesh Hounds (17 to be exact). Once I finish green-stuffing them I'll take a picture. Naturally they are the older metal ones. I've also got Karanak lined up, which will be a nice contrast: he's so much bigger than the old flesh hounds.

My Flesh Hounds being green-stuffed:

Some further work on my 2nd 10 bloodletters:

Also been trying out a paint scheme for my Flesh Hounds:

I'm trying to stick with the scheme I used for the 'letters, but with a different spot color (the hair). Also, the flesh hounds were a pain to green-stuff, because almost nothing fit. So many gaps..

I was also (un)pleasantly surprised when I opened an old Karanak (metal) blister I had picked up in a store ages ago and found it was missing one of the heads. I'll have to find a new one now.

Bob and his trusty hound:

Still undecided if I want to change the spikes on the back of the hound to bone color.

I've also started on the command squad:

(Uncle Khorne wants YOU!)

Hopefully I should finish the entire squad this weekend.

@sturmtruppe:
Thanks, my army will (when it's finished) only consist of old(er)-style models, except for units that had no models back then. No plastic allowed (except bases)!

My 2nd 10 bloodletters are basically finished:

The original dark-toned one is on the far right. It is very slightly less dark than the other 9, but oh well.

I also found time to work on the Champion/Herald:

Making pictures really shows so many imperfections in the painting process. That or maybe I need glasses...

The last 2 are under way as well:

I'm still thinking whether I will start on another god's troops next or continue with Khorne. I have 2 khorne chariots lined up (with Heralds on them) which look fun to do next. Basically they are the old metal Chaos Chariot with 2 old-style Juggernauts (not the REALLY old Realm of Chaos ones, but the ones that came with the WH40k Khorne Lord with plasma pistol, which was available from GW until recently).

Due to the easter holidays I didn't have much time to work on the army, but I did manage to get some painting in:

Kinda depressing I still have 12 more (and a 2nd squad as well) after this, but at least they are easy to paint.

I've also been thinking about my chariots. Because I use 2 big Juggernauts to pull them the standard chariot base is woefully too small. If I use http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat470008a&prodId=prod1750002a instead would that be acceptable? I see that the new plastic kits come with a monster base (100x50mm) but mine were planned before they came out.

Alternatively I could have it pulled by just 1 juggernaut, but that would be weak!

Haven't painted much the past few days but did receive some things in the mail:

I think I have all the different poses (and the command squad in the back). Because they are newer models (2006 I think?) they contrast well with my first squad. No confusion on the battlefield!

My 2nd squad of bloodletters is now complete, stripped and cleaned thoroughly.

Working on the next 6 flesh hounds:

Finished those 6 hounds, working on the last 6 now.

I used my current force for a bit in an unusual battle, where my Eldar faced my brother's Blood Angels in a fight over a demonic portal (aka the Relic) (Roll a D6: 1-5 = spawn 4d6 bloodletters, 6 = bloodthirster) to spice it up a bit. Naturally, it was a big massacre, especially when my brother rolled a 6 two turns in a row.

My Khorne army so far:

Last 6 hounds nearly finished, probably done tonight.

Also cleaned and primed the bloodletters, plush some liquid green stuff for the gaps on the champion/banner bearer.

Once I finish that squad I'll start on some heralds so I can play some games (using a bloodthirster in low points games is probably a bit too mean).

Started work on a test for the 2nd squad:

Still needs some touching up. I think it matches up with the previous squad well enough. I'm not a fast painter so I think this was about 3 hours work. Will take 3-4 weeks to finish the squad I think.

It took a lot of time to gather all those OOP models together. Cheaply that is, even with Ebay/local sources.

Strangely enough I found those flesh hounds in a shop quite near, where they'd probably been on the shelf for many years (I think those sculpts are from 2004 or so?)

Didn't feel like painting much today so spent some time gathering all the bits for my chariots (now called Blood Thrones).

Ingredients:

2 Chaos Chariots:

4 old-style Juggernauts (not the really old Realm of Chaos ones, since I like these better):

2 Champions, the same as my troop squads:

Everything:

I'm going to pin nearly everything (and especially the feet of the juggernauts to the base so it will hold through the gaming. The 2 juggernauts should just about fit on the big monster base, the chariot's scything blades should be clear too. I have some command group models as well left over which I may add to the base as a sort of escort later on. The larger base will make using a transport tray easier too since it shouldn't be hard to make a snug fit in my Battlefoam trays.

Found some spare time to do some pinning:

The Herald is pinning with his feet to the chariot. Since he had a raised leg already it fit very well!

Base-coated 10 bloodletters and washed them (forgot to take a pic though).

Did play a few battles this weekend (3 to be precies, 2 at 1062 points and 1 at 1212), just testing out my painted models.

Not really fair at these low point values, but hey.. 2 greater demons help a lot when you don't have ANY shooting units whatsoever.

List:
Bloodthirster (Exalted Reward, Greater Reward)
Great Unclean One (ML3, 2 Greater Rewards) (Rolled an amazing Iron Arm, Endurance, Warp Speed combo).

2x 13 bloodletters with Standard, Icon and Sergeant

10 and 7 flesh hounds

vs

My brother's IG army:
Manticore
Demolisher
Platoon with autocannons and flamer command squad
veteran squad with meltaguns
Primaris Psyker
3 Armoured Sentinels
Vendetta
3 Sabre Defense Platforms

Needless to say my Bloodthirster was a prime target with all those autocannons/multi-lasers.

Some more work on my 'letters:

Also picked up a not-Khorne model:

Since it's hunched over it's about as big as a normal bloodletter. It's far more bulky though. It'll make a good Herald of Khorne.

More work done on the 'letters and the herald (nearly finished):

I think it fits well enough with the rest.

I also picked up a Lord of Pestilence, aka not-Nurgle Herald:

Unlike the not-Khorne one, this needed copious amounts of greenstuff to hide all the cracks. Also lots of filing because of huge mouldlines. It's about as tall as anormal plaguebearer, but far more bulky.

The first 10 bloodletters of the 2nd squad are nearly done:

Just need some work on the axes' engraving and some corrections. I found a pretty huge mouldine on one the axes, which was a major downer. I'll have to see if I can get it off without ruining the rest of the paintjob.

Also found time to do Karanak while waiting for paint to dry on those 10:

I used a spare head from another flesh hound as his third head, since that was missing from the blister. (The right-most head is the non-Karanak one).

Just as something different I started on Skulltaker:

So far I've painted:
20 bloodlettters + command squad
10 bloodletters + command squad
1 herald of khorne
17 flesh hounds
1 Karanak

Not bad for 1 month of work! I managed to track down 3 more flesh hounds of the same model on Ebay so soon I'll have the full squad of 20.

Did most of the work on Skulltaker:

I'm not really happy with him. Especially the cloak's inside was hard to do in my colour scheme. I'm not sure it works well with this model. Also the model has a lot of rough places (mostly inside the cloak/armpits) which I found hard to make any sense of. I may re-paint him. I also suck at painting fire.. sigh.

My brother also finished a skull.. err victim:

Worked some more on the 'letters:

Also received my last 3 Flesh Hounds, stripped, cleaned and green-stuffed. Now waiting for it to harden a bit so I can sand:

Those dogs always have huge gaps (especially the head seems to be warped a lot, filing it down helped, but it still needs a lot of greenstuff.

Thanks! With all the good painting on Dakka I sometimes get a bit disappointed in my own results. I do know I have gotten better since I started again 1.5 years ago, but the process is slow :0

---

I had little to do but paint this weekend so I've been busy with the Flesh Hounds. I tried snapping pictures at each stage:

Primed:

Base-coat with Khorne Red:

Washed with red wash:

Drybrush with red:

Drybrush with orange:

Hair/teeth with Deneb Stone:

Wash with nuln oil:

Drybrush with white:

Cleanup with khorne red/normal red:

Collar black:

Collar gold and base with castellan green:

Based:

Grass tufts and varnish:

Simple and fast. Since I had to paint 20 of these doggies I had to I mostly paint to play, so I usually don't spend many hours on each basic infantry model.
