The ANP was recently named by the Pakistani Taliban as a "legitimate" target
At least nine people have been killed and dozens injured in Pakistan after a suicide bomb attack in Peshawar.
The Awami National Party (ANP), which governed the restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, had called the political rally ahead of next month's elections.
The Pakistani Taliban, which has repeatedly targeted the ANP, said it had carried out the attack.
The polls are expected to mark the country's first-ever civilian-to-civilian transfer of power.
Local television streamed live images of vehicles burning and people trying to reach the wounded amid clouds of smoke.
Senior ANP leader Ghulam Bilour, who served as railways minister in the outgoing government, escaped the blast with minor injuries, police said.

The ANP is one of three parties recently named by a spokesman of the Pakistani Taliban as "legitimate" targets for militant attacks during the elections.
The other two parties are the Karachi-based MQM, and the Pakistan People's Party (PPP).
The three parties are secular and dominated Pakistan's last government that completed its five-year term last month.
A recent report by BBC Urdu said that more than 700 ANP activists had been killed by snipers or suicide bombers during the last four years, including a top party leader, Bashir Bilour - the brother of Ghulam.
In recent weeks, low-intensity bombs have gone off at several local ANP election meetings, which analysts say have reduced the party's ability to conduct an open campaign.
On Sunday, the Pakistani Taliban attacked two ANP leaders, killing one and wounding the other.

I'd say I'd question the honesty of someone who claimed to be just as affected by the death of someone they've never met halfway around the world as they would be by the death of an immediate family member, but I wouldn't even question it. I'd straight-up know they were lying.
Of course emotional commitment to a tragedy varies. I'm not sure why everyone's arguing so hard against that.

Holy crap. Why is the Pakistani military not kicking the crap out of these guys? Are they allied at some level?

The Pakistani military trained the Taliban, they are tied. The military it's self, along with elements in the secret service and police force are becoming radicalized.
The danger then becomes a new, radicalized and frothy mouthed Pakistan, facing a harder nosed and more aggressive India across the Kashmir.
As predicted in science fiction for ages, we are looking at not just national pride and a deep seated hatred, but a very valuable resource, drinking water, for the desert nation and the nation with the massive population.
This will really not end well if something doesn't radically alter from the path they are currently moving on.
Its most disconcerting when I get this serious post with good info then I scroll down and see a dwarf B slapping a punk kid.
Excellent!

I believe that Pakistan is a nation that currently needs a powerful, western educated and sympathetic general to take control by force. We need a materially driven monster in there to prevent a religiously motivated one assuming control and 'taking everyone off to heaven'.

I hope you watched the youtube clip and I hope you were sufficiently concerned, if these two do finally go at it, it's the 3rd world war.

Except I think that the Clerics have pretty much already won...
Anyone or group in Pakistan who openly supports a more western ideology is ruthlessly attacked by the radical gakheads & religous nutters.
Hence things like these very public bombings followed by the threats of more bombing/killings.
Western governments need to wake-up and realise the extreme threat that is Islamofacisim is very, very real and that it's only growing and getting worse.

You mean that there may be a problem with two nuclear armed countries going to war over long standing grievances and a border dispute?

Fresh water, that's what will do it eventually, the resources for survival. Not pride or hatred, just water and food.

You mean like the blasphemy laws were you can be sentenced to death? Or the Pakistanis selling what was left of ST6's helicopter to the Chinese after Operation Geronimo? Or their intelligence services (ISI) training the Taliban and helping them?

A sufficiently motivated and supported military hardcase who is regarded as suitably religious initially could do it and do away with the potential power rivals from the religious powerbases, that would be an ideal situation for the rest of the world, subdue the loonies and let western fast food, loose morals and pop music erode the religious fervor with the younger generations.
Or we'll instead face the assimilated and reprogrammed youth of a fanatic state. All nodding heads, mumbled praises and one book to rule them all...

Too bad there's no political willpower among western governments to kick the 'politically correct' crowd in the junk and instead offer full support to a moderate hard-liner who'd be more sympathetic and willing to integrate with outside cultures & international interests...

Too many fingers burned with kingmaking during the counter-soviet influence financing and arming of anyone who wasn't a commie... like the Taliban...

My money's on India. Pakistan needs to mellow out before India goes apeshit and just obliterates them. Hopefully not though. I have no desire to see a war that has casualty rates approaching WWII's Eastern Front.

Well, to be fair I think we are better off than if we had let the Ruskies take over Eurasia. At least the Islamic extremists are quite happy to kick the gak out of each other just as much as us Imperialist dogs.
