What about the Sunfire Gem on the Annointed for Str 5 fly-over hits with the phoenix?

The Lair of Vengeance....Poole.

I'd go phoenix heavy so you can combo charge the frost and the fire to get the best of both. And take Caradryan on his phoenix.

That way you get 3 fire phoenixes and 2 frost phoenixes.

I'd also get some skycutters in. Without the bolt throwers. People say they aren't that great(More directed at the bolt thrower here). BUT, they are movement 10 chariots ho can't be blocked off by chaff. They can be combo charged with the phoenixes for more damage.

Taking Caradryan means dropping almost if not all my magic (depending on whether I keep the BsB). No thanks.

Also how would I get 5 phoenix in?

Sky cutters are good don't see what Id drop to take them though.

However switching a Phoenix to Frost is a good idea. I took Flame due to coming back to life and to help the Knights deal with massed ranks. However multiple Monstrous Cav units cause me a problem and the Frostheart deals with them very effectively. Id drop the upgrades on the Eagles and barding on one of the Wizards horses.

The 5 phoenixes are as follows: Annointed's flame, Caradryan's frost, 2 flame phoenixes, and a frost. (I've only had a brief look at the book, so I'm not actually sure if it will fit.)

As for chariots, I'd drop the eagles and shadow warriors. The chariots will take the roll of war machine hunters and provide impact hits to the combats they help with.

Well the Phoenix are all over 200 points so you can't take 3 in rare.

Likewise dropping the Eagles and Shadow warriors still leaves me 20 points shy of the Skycutter and with movement only 10 it can't really threaten Warmachines until turn 3 when its irrelevant anyway...

I see. Well, if you take caradryan, an annointed and 1/2 eaglenobles, maybe a mage., minimal mounted core and flying chariots, you have an army with the lowest movement of 9". And the only thing is accepting that some spells will go through, and you have to prioritise the ones you need to stop. The army should be in combat from turn 2 onwards.

And I never said the chariots were faster, I said they were good at killing war machines. And that is true, because of the impact hits.

I'd go all high magic, but the list is solid. If you get the gem, the lords phoenix could get +1 to wound on it's fly over attacks once a game.

You need speed to kill war machines and the skycutters aren't quick enough to do it. Plus the impact hits wound on 6s as they are distributed as shooting. Hunting war machines is not a good role for the Skycutter.

Are they not 'distributed AS IF from shooting'? The difference there being you should be hitting the crews toughness but you couldn't use those hits to target any characters your in base to base with?

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

Distributed as shooting doesn't make them a shooting attack. It's still a close combat attack, it still generates combat resolution. Impact hits are rolling against the crew's toughness.
But even with that, sky cutters are still too slow. 10" move turn 1, 19" average charge. Unless an opponent is deploying his warmachines forward, you won't be charging that flying chariot until turn 3.
Great Eagles, Phoenix, fast cav, or shadow warriors all make good machine hunters.
