Subject: New player, need help! Starting with Eldar
|
 |
Fresh-Faced New User
|
Hello! I'm a brand new player to Warhammer 40k Tabletop (And tabletop games in general).
As you might have guessed from the title, I've decided to go with Eldar as my race, they interest me the most as far as the story goes, and I feel that I'd get the most enjoyment out of using them, at least at this point in time. The issue is, that I'm really lost when it comes to building my first army, I don't really know anything about the "must haves" or what's good to start with, or even how many points to put into my first army, I've set aside about 350-400 dollars for this endeavor, that includes Models, Paints, tools, Books, and anything else I might need, and I'm genuinely hoping that that's enough to start with
All that being said, if you guys could give me some suggestions on what kinds of units I should start with, or a little direction to get me goin', I'd appreciate it immensely!

Wait. No seriously just wait. The rumor mill is pretty convinced that Eldar will be getting a new Codex next month. I'd hold off until then, were I in your shoes. Automatically Appended Next Post: Otherwise, welcome to the hobby!

Yeah, I've heard that, and I understand that updates change things and whatnot, but I honestly don't want to wait a month before getting into the hobby, I figured that I could at least get a small army that isn't likely to be phased out or majorly changed by the update. I'm not familiar with Warhammer, or how major some updates are, but there has to be some core concepts or units that I can get that stand a very, very low chance of being changed, right?
Thanks for your suggestion, though!

I suppose you'd be safe with some of the basics, like a farseer, and a couple units of Guardians of Dire Avengers for troops choices. A good army is going to need some of those no matter what. Other than that, it all really depends on how you want your army to play on the table top. Do you want your force to be massed firepower, quick and hard to pin down, or heavy on the assault units?

Would a battleforce be the besy place to start? 100 or so bucks to get a bare bones beginner army?

The battle force is a great place to start but just to get you started I would go with 2 squads of dire avengers a farseer a unit of fire dragons and a wave serpent. Comes right around 500 points +- a few for upgrades and is a perfect base towards all future Eldar armies.
Welcome to the hobby and Eldar in general they are really hard to learn and master but perhaps the most rewarding I have found. Good luck and I would hold off on getting more than I had mentioned untill the new codex drops and then see what options you have then cheers

Thanks for your suggestion! I think since the Battleforce brings some of that, I figure I'll just end up dropping a hundred bucks on that and get a leader as Scyrell suggested, and entertain myself in the meantime with learning how to paint them and putting them together and whatnot. Thanks! I'm glad to hear I picked a challenging race to play, since the most challenging paths are usually the most rewarding in the end when it comes to well, anything, really, in my experience (and as you said!) So I'm sure I'll have plenty of fun learning the game as Eldar!
Also, thanks for your suggestion! I think I'll go for a battleforce and pick up a leader and chill with that until the updates come out, now you suggested a farseer, but on the GW website I see a Farseer with Warlocks, and somewhere else I see Farseer with staff, is Farseer with Warlocks any better or Different aside from the addition of the warlocks or..?
Is there a guide somewhere that anyone can link to that can maybe give me some of the pros and cons of the different HQs?
Additionally, ince I plan to use an Ulthwe paint scheme, are there any good guides that anyone knows of on this website, or wherever (before I go out to find it myself, that is) that can help me with that?

You also might to delve into the fluff a bit and read about the major Craftworlds and see if any of their color schemes or unit preferences strike you as interesting. Each Craftworld has a bit of their own flavor and playstyle.

Great choice on the ulthwe craftworld it's my craftworld as well so not to much bias when I say it's the best. The colors and story of ulthwe are biased on the idea of farseers and warlocks primarily. Farseers are the great force multipliers they buff the destruction and durability of several units around them. Warlocks are their guards sorta but can be really destructive as well provided they are buffed by a farseer however units of warlocks are super expensive so at least to start I would digest to get the farseer and lock box because 5 and the seer are minimum about 300 points. On the plus side they are beautiful models and fit the Theme but to start use the farseer in that box and my other suggestions for a base army. Beyond that look on the forums here for how to paint I am not even close to the best painter for giving suggestions just someone that loves Eldar
Beyond that personally i love the model that comes with the warlocks (he's using 2 swords) and the difference between him and the other one is using the spear he gets a shooting attack but he other uses melee. Other than that they are the same and the major thing they do is buff the rest of your army. Beyond a farseer consider getting the avatar because he is an absolute monster in close combat and at the moment (at least untill the new codex) super cheap for what he does
For painting look at the codex for the schemes oh want And i highly recommend the how to paint guide that games workshop prints though you can probably find it online hope this helps.

As far as picking a craftworld, I chose Ulthwe, but does choosing Ulthwe prevent me from using certain units? As far as actual gameplay goes, is there a gameplay mechanic that restricts my unit choices based on the craftworld I choose? (I understand the story aspect, of course)

It doesn't prevent you from using anything at the moment. It's really an aesthetic thing. Traditionally Ulthwe is heavy on Psykers and anything connected to Guardians (Defenders, Storms, War Walkers, Tanks, Heavy Weapons, etc.). The great thing about Eldar is that you aren't necessarily locked into the same colors for the entire army. Aspect squads all have their own traditional colors and Harlequins do their own thing.

I play Ulthwe aswel, but I try to keep the Black as a theme throughout my army. Aspects will typically be the primary colour (Blue for avengers, etc), with Black as the secondary.
I second what was mentioned. It doesn't lock you into playing a certain way, but it can give your army a theme if you wish. I try to follow some rules when making a list;
Minimum 2 squads of guardians (3 in social games) - Ulthwe usually fields many guardians.
A warlock with EVERY guardian/jetbike squad.
Always include a Farseer (typically Eldrad)
I try to take an equal of less amount of aspect squads as I do guardian squads. Unless it's for a tournament, then screw composition!
Maybe get a small squad of something in the coming weeks, just to tide you over until the new codex and units come out. Good choices will always be Fire Dragons, Dire Avengers, maybe some guardians, wave serpents, war walkers. I don't think any of those will receive new models, and are all likely to still be effective choices in a month.
Good luck

I personally play Craftworld Mymeara - a colour gradient of dark green through to aqua, starting dark at the feet and light near the shoulders; black helmets and white weapons. Fluff wise, they work primarily with distortion weaponry (D-cannons, Distort cannons, distortion cannons and wraithcannons), Wraiths in general (guard, lords and the seer) and guardians. The only aspect warriors they have in number (fluff wise) are Shadow Spectres. With Eldar, the options to theme your list/army without railroading yourself are endless. And when in doubt, canibalise 2-3 craftworlds tactics wise (if they work for you) and make up a new craftworld and a new colour scheme. Half the reason I chose mymeara was for moajority T6-T8 on the battlefield and the fact I can paint my army really fast and lazily (base coat 1 colour, dry brush 2 more, black/white detail, done).

So far the effectiveness of 10 Wraithblades with Ghost Axes:
Tanked 2 Leman Russ squadrons (including the battle cannons and the triple plasma variant); whilst also getting wailed on by everything imaginable in a Fortress of Redemption. Only to get into CC with the tanks and open them up.
2000 points worth of Necrons with Forgeworld additions. Got into CC with a court of Lords and opened them up.
Killed a GUO.
Killed Angrath the Gargantuan Bloodthirster in an Apoc game (with the help of Iranna the Spirit Seer).
Ate a Hammerhead, pathfinders and scored after 3 turns of walking towards a 2000 point Tau gunline and overwatch!
And counting............ |

Thanks for the advice! It really helped, but a question:
Is the minimum two squads of guardians for story consistency with Ulthwe, or do several squads of Guardians have value in a small army?

Very good advice, I plan on going with going at least with an Ulthwe color scheme (because I think that it looks awesome and I'm not creative enough to come up with my own color scheme yet) , but I don't think I plan on staying locked into any sort of Craftworld's "theme" for the most part, as far as picking units goes.
A question about units, however (this goes to anyone, not necessarily Syranas), How do Warp Spiders and Harlequins fare in the game? Since those are some of the Eldar warriors I find most interesting, but I don't know if those would really work in most fights (I understand, of course, that Eldar units are specialized, but you know what I mean, like in most fights against players if they'd like, find any use, or be outclassed at their jobs by another eldar unit in most situations that apply to them)
And another question about the codex, since the Eldar Codex is going to get an update soon, supposedly, should I even bother getting one of the current versions physically? Or is there maybe a PDF up of it somewhere that I can just grab it and keep it on my tablet or print out and put in a binder? (Wishful thinking, I know, but I figured I'd ask)

Guardians are commin in the Ulthwe fluff. Basically, because of the constant warring state of Ulthwe, they have a larger standing army than most Craftworlds.
A previous Codex iteration had a restriction that you may take 1 squad of aspect warriors for every squad of guardians. Additionally, Ulthwe forces could select 2 squads of Guardians to become 'Black Guardians'. They received a boost of 1 bs if defenders, or 1ws if storm guardians.
Warp Spiders and Harlequins are two of the best units in the codex at the moment (until next month apparently). I always field Warp Spiders. They're just plain awesome. Love the fluff, models and rules. Dunno about harlies personally, as i've never fielded them. Apparently they're really go though. Warp spiders Always have a use. They can take out infantry, or the rear armour of tanks, light armour. You should always find a target for them. They make great denial units and can be scoring too.
Whether or not it's worth getting a hard-copy codex is up for debate. It's likely only valid for another fortnight. I wouldn't know anything about finding one online. I certainly wouldn't recommend searching file sharing sites or the like.

Welcome to the craft world!!
I do Ulthwe my self as well and love em, my main force is a bit fluffy and a bit well I like that unit so it's going in there, guardian wise all mine are mounte on Jetbikes just cos I have a load of em and I make use of warlocks with them all cos they just buff the unit endlessly.
I would highly recommend getting an Eldrad at some point he is 'THE' Farseer and if your going fluffy Ulthwe you'll want him, he's incredibly cost effective for what he can do for your army.
With regards harlequins I take them my self and they are superb until a flamer shows up lol when joined by the shadowseer they gain the stealth and shrouded special rules so they have a 4+ cover in the open and a 2+ in any cover that coupled with their abiłity to ignore cover and a Farseer fortuning them make for a mean unit. they are a combat unit that when joined by a shadow seer and a Farseer are nigh unstoppable in combat, you want these guys with their kisses cos that gives them rending in combat as they turn their enemies to mush! They're initiative 6 with 4 attacks each on the charge, fairly mean! Yes with the kisses they're 22 pts a pop but they always make their points back for me and have loved em since the first game!
With regards to what you should get now I'd reccomend if you we're wanting to go down the battle force I'd get two if possible that then gives you 2 wave serpents, 2 war walkers which with the right weapons 'cough scatter lasers cough' are a good fire base unit and 20 guardians and 2 heavy weapon platforms and a full squad of 10 dire avengers that then gives you a good solid and relatively fluffy basis of an army to then add in whatever aspects you want and some farseers to make the fluffy Ulthwe army you want
Yes eldar are a challenging army to play and don't be surprised if to start with you struggle we've all been there they aren't a forgiving army to play but when you find the balance that works for they will reward you all day long!
Most of all enjoy!!

Cool! I'll be sure to grab plenty of Warp Spiders, then, them being my favorite aspect warriors, and I can see what you mean about the codex, I'll probably wait a couple of weeks, then, since that's probably how long it'll take me to get together all the tools and paints and miniatures built and whatnot anyway. So I probably won't be playing at least until then, anyway.

Thank you for all the information! A question, though, I see plenty of people saying to take Eldrad, but could you tell me a little about what sets him apart or makes him better than say, an Avatar of Khaine or the normal Farseer with Warlocks? Or why he's, in your opinion a "must have"? Story and whatnot aside, that is. Automatically Appended Next Post: Mythra wrote:I've played against anough Eldar to know - Always take Eldrad.
Their Transports are awesome too with all the saves. Max on weapon str vs their armor.
Fire dragons are way good too. Meltas for the win.
Heard plenty of good things about Fire Dragons as well, thanks for your suggestion! But as I asked the guy above you, do you by any chance know why people always take Eldrad? I understand that you might not know since you don't sound like you play Eldar, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask

Eldrad, as for now, is the only level 3 psyker able to cast the same power twice. A common tactic is to cast fortune, fortune and another power. He has a nice weapon (flashbane, vp2) that adds quite a punch in deathstar units, such as harlequins or wraithguards. He also redeploy d3+1 units, useful if going first.
I'd you suggest to take a fire dragon squad. Fun to paint and the exarch has 3 options (melta, flamer or pike). They won't probably get outdated. You can also throw in a wave serpent. Practise with magnetizing, which is mandatory for Eldar players.
Seriously magnetize everything, you won't regret! Automatically Appended Next Post: About Eldrad I forgot another common tactic. Swap powers (4) on Telepathy and you have 2/3 of getting Invisibility. Invisible fortuned council is just crazy. Once I got no losses against a stormlord and a baneblade in a full turn of shooting.

Thanks for the information!
As far as Magnetizing goes, I definitely plan on it, are there any specific size of magnets you suggest I get? or A place to get them from?

For magnets i generally use Amazon vendors. 1/8 x 1/16 is what i believe i put in all my people's arms.
As for Eldrad, as stated above, he can cast the same power twice, and that is fantastic. I used to cast guide on two units of war walkers wIth scatter lasers and fortune on what ever else. 48 twin linked S6 shots really left a mark. Hello! I'm a brand new player to Warhammer 40k Tabletop (And tabletop games in general).
In this case, I'd stay away from an army like Eldar. It is difficult to play successfully for a new player. Its rather unforgiving in opposition to Marine armies. Another issue is the old codex which makes it hard to build competitive builds. Tanks are overpriced and no flyers available. Anyway, I'd go for Marines.

It was my first army, granted that was in 5th, but i wouldn't discourage anyone from them. You learn good lessons fast with them. My recommendation is pick an army with models and fluff you like, and pray they don't alter both drastically.
There's supposed to be a codex coming which will hopefully address all your concerns.

Thank you for your concern and suggestions! However, I'm simply not interested in the space marines, I just don't like their story or their look (not as much as the Eldar, anyway), and I honestly can't see myself paying so much money for something that I don't absolutely love nearly every aspect of (not including gameplay, since I obviously haven't started playing yet.) On the same note, I don't like playing races that aren't human (or very human in appearance, like the Eldar, which are pretty much Elves), since I feel that it helps me with the immersion of the story and whatnot, and in turn, my enjoyment of the hobby altogether.
Again, thank you, and I appreciate you taking your time to help me out!
