Hi all, and welcome to my little corner of Dakka!

I primarily enjoy the painting and modelling part of this hobby so I thought I would share some of what I do with all of you. Feel free to comment and ask questions if you want.

It is important to me that my workspace is very well organized and that everything I need is at an armslength so I don't have to stop working just to find some little thingemabob.

This is my current workspace.

Now, one might say that it looks OK but I really don't like the paintrack for two reasons. 1. It holds far to few paints and 2. The design actually damages the labels.

When I was thinking about better designs I came across this picture.

As you can see it saves quite a lot of space and the shape of the bottles as similar. So I went about making a test. Just a piece of scrap MDF and roundstock is actually for supporting plants

I think it turned out quite well and this was an excellent proof of concept. Now it's time to go bigger!

So, I have chosen the size of the paintrack and I am going for a 420 bottle design. (450 if you count using the uppermost row that is half outside the paintrack).

Now, if you wish to make your own. Make sure that you realize that this design makes 465 pegs and holes to be made. It's not really hard but it takes quite a bit of time to work your way through.

I went to the hardware store and I was lucky, finding a precut board at exactly the dimensions I wanted (40x80cm). I also got 4 packs of roundstock that is actually to be used to support plants. They are marked 7mm but in reality they are 6,5mm. This is not important but make sure the holes fit the actual dimensions.

I went about and marked all the holes, since the bottles are about 25mm I choose to make the spaceing 26mm in width and 27mm in height. This will give some play but still pack them quite tightly.

I also fabricated two tools to help me. The longer one is sort of a cross cut sled to help me use my jigsaw almost like a bandsaw to cut the pegs for the holes. The shorter one is a tool to help me enter the pegs at an even depth.

The next part was to start drilling all the holes. Now here is where I made the first real mistake. Since I don't have a drill press i thought that I could drill all the holes by hand. True enough, holes there where but the where not close to as exact as I would have liked. Some slanted and some missed the mark a bit. Since the tolerances is quite small I had to do a lot of extra work to fix these holes.

The next part I didn't document. It's the cutting of 465 pegs, boooring... and to make it even better I had to sand of the burrs on each of them as well. That was one of the parts that was way more time consuming that I had ever thought.

I have made a lot of progress here and the number of adjustments of holes I have had to make was not really that bad. The adjustments was made by drilling the holes a bit oversize and then inserted toothpicks covered in glue to try to fix the peg in the exact position.

I can only say wow to the dedication of assembling and making your paintrack! I am really envious of having a more dedicated area for hobbying. I have set aside a space where the woman keeps her stationary with a movable painttray from Hobbyzone, guess that have to do for now..

Will check in to see the end result!

Lycka till!

I finally had some time to finish the project. This is how it turned out.

All in all, a good build BUT to critique myself there are a few things I could have done better.

1. The pegs need to be absolutely straight with this design since the tolerances are so small. Next time I will find a drill press.
2. The pegs should have been a little longer. At present they stick out about 40mm. I could have pushed that to 50mm with no problem this getting a bit more stable placement of bottles.
3. The material for the backboard should have been better quality. Now the holes "moved" a bit due to drilling in cross grain. And as I said, small tolerances.

But this will do for a few years until I want to do a new build. I think I will stick to this general design though, very space efficient.

Now, when I sorted the paints and got em in place I took inventory. (Had fewer than I thought but more than I should)

Mediums: 7
Washes/Inks: 8
Game Color: 27
Model Air: 18
Panzer Aces: 8
Model Color: 91

And I realized that I had as many as 19 doubles. I will have to go through and see what is worth saving and what to sell at the gamingclub at a friendly discount price

Well, now that the paintrack is completed it's time to actually get some modelling and painting done over here.

For inspiration I went to a local model builder show in a close by town. It so happens they had a store there... and I may have spent a little more then I should...

Don't expect to much speed in my work though. I have problems with having peace and focus to actually get something done. But when I do, I very much enjoy it.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
So, what I am actually working on is a few Rhinos for my Dark Angels chapter. Or at least one of the things I am working on, I tend to have a lot of projects going so I can switch between them to keep it interesting.

The project is divided into 3 major parts.

1. Removing unwanted details
2. Making replacements for existing detail
3. Adding new custom detail

(4. And ofcourse the painting but that is a later chapter)

I do have a todo list but perhaps it's more fun to read about is a I go along.

The first thing I started was to remove the smokestacks. They are a part of the Rhino design that I've never liked. I have an idea to make my own but I haven't really decided on the specific design yet.

Another part that I don't like with any model is the seam lines that the parts make. It would have been ok if they where made to into some panelling design but on the Rhino they are just ugly and uneven. So I decided to try to fill in the cracks and erase the seamlines. This will take me roughly FOREVER, but on the other hand. I don't really have anything better to do.

Here you can see part of how it turns out. I might have to leave some due to placement. But I will do the most obvious spots. It's hard to see small details like this on an unprimed model. To test I feel with my nails, if it feels smooth I think we will be OK. When I prime it grey we will know for sure.

So, I made a bit of progress yesterday and got most of the seems smooth so I will be moving to the next part.

I had an idea of getting a relief graphics on the top with using thin plasticard. In my head it is very cool. Since I play Dark Angels they have their own troops graphics and I would rather not extend past the hatch since I want to be able to switch it to a razorback when I need to.

So the question really is... do you guys think it is too small or will it work nicely?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The more I thought about it the smaller the graphics looked so I did a bigger one.

And I thought that I could manage to make a version for the razorback aswell. So I first tried how it would look with some maskingtape.

The final versions will be made in the computer, printed on paper and attached with non-permanent spray glue for the cutting. This will make it easier to get it exact and also repeatable.

In my opinion the bigger one is much nicer.

As usual we tend to get bogged down with real life, I was hit by a severe dose of reality a couple of months ago and I am finally getting back on the horse.

So I thought cleaning up the ol' workspace was a good place to begin. Reworked the toolboard to get room for more tools and got hangers for the airbrushes to have easy access. I also got myself a Harder & Steenbeck Airblower, very handy when cleaning up a model or hobbyspace.

Ps. Sorry for the distorted perspective.

Thanks guys! I like my little space. All in all its 1.3x1.7meters so about 2.2 square meters so not that big at all. But as with everything else, you make do with what you got.

There is a dream of a proper workshop where I also could do some woodworking, perhaps in the size of 50-60 square meters but that will have to wait for quite some time

As suspected the cleanup got the inspiration flowing so I started playing 'round with my new airbrush (bought some time ago). Maaan is it a step up from the old one, the control is quite something compared to the old noname airbrush. Pictures will be posted as soon as there is anything to show, today was just doodeling. AND giving my self a heartattack... I had tightened the airflow assembly to tight so no air was coming through, hart stopped for a few seconds.

Well, I finally have something hobbyrelated on the workbench. It has been a long long time now.

First up is one 1:72 tank (A Russian IS-3). I thought this was a good model to learn more about painting and weathering tanks.

Sofar just primer (Vallejo Grey Primer) and a basecoat (VMC Russian Green 70894). Next step is an oilwash, haven't tried that before so it will be interesting. I will put a layer of gloss varnish under the oilwash so I can remove excess easily.

Next is a little idea I got a while back. Flamer and blast templates are pretty darn boring and then I got the idea to use a clear paint to make them a little more interesting. I found some Tamiya clears at a local modelshop. I got yellow, orange and red.

Now this is just fooling around a bit so I had no real plan for pattern. Will try to make something a little more fancy for the flamer when I get to that.

Ok, so finally after just sitting in a puddle of sweat for a couple of weeks I got to doing some priming and painting in the workshop...

...right of the bat the airbrush was acting funky. It's not the new one, I use the old one for primer and varnish since it can be a bit tricky to remove if it hardens in the brush due to bad cleaning and also good to have to brushes to switch between. Anyways, I take it apart, i give it a good clean and then get back painting. I always put some water through first just to check that it sprays ok. Paint back in, works for a few seconds then funky again... what the f---!?

So after closer examination, it turns out I have a leak where the cup meets the body. And I don't know what has happened but air leaks out there but also into the cup making it foam. I guess I can now officially call that one dead :(

I had really gotten used to the thought of having two alternating airbrushes... crap :(

Thank you all for the compliments on the workspace, I feel I have made a pretty good little haven using only 2sqm.

Todays use of the workbench is two different projects.

1. I am trying to master the process of oilwash and I am having a bit of a struggle but I think there might be a little progress with todays trials.
2. I have done the flamertemplate as above and as soon as it has had some time to cure I will post pictures. Also I have applied a good coat of varnish on the blastmarker to protect the painted surface.

Finally getting some work going. And since I have ordered lots of new stuff it's I good thing I do

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The thing I really can't figure out though is why I didn't do the small blastmarker when I had the airbrush going...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And also, when I was doing some airbrushing for the oilwash experiments I did a bit of basic skills training with doing airbrush highlights.

The funny thing is that I have been using my previous airbrush for a while, but when I started using my new airbrush a whole new world opened up when it comes to precision.

Problem being that I sort of have to start over learning skill all over again, or rather find skills I didn't have due to my airbrush not being as good

So, waiting for the artsupply store to open again for the summer I thought I would get back to another projekt that has been shelved for a while. The Rhinoproject

To get myself organized I thought I would start with making a todo-list.

1. Finish the orthographic CAD drawings of the rhino for reference use. Atleast as far as I will need.
2. Design the new headlight fittings
3. Make light fittings out of plasticard
4. Make new exhaust pipes
5. Add plasticard graphics on top with a tactical arrow marking
6. Make handles on the side of exithatches
7. Make laddersteps running up top on the left back fender

Then we have the painting but I will detail that later.

Sofar today I have been tackling the first two points. I took some highres photos from all sides. Corrected perspective and drew ontop to get the angles right without measuring to much. And also decided the shape and size of the light fitting. Tomorrow I can start making a mockup atleast.

Ok... I might agree that I am a bit easily distracted... this is what I have done today... I don't really have a plan, it's just fun to draw...

What it might be good for is making template designs for painting and airbrushing. Btw, the light fitting is not the original at the moment...

Well hello there elaps!

A house would be super awesome, but for now I will have to make do with at super small workshop. What would happen with more space is getting some serious hardware like a drillpress and a bandsaw and perhaps finish the cnc-router that I have planned. Also a vacuform would be awesome. On the other hand, for building models this is really good enough.

Did some more work on the drawing, perhaps my OCD can let go of this now and I can actually get something done

The experiments with oilwash goes on... Yesterday I bought myself some premium oilpaints and a higher quality thinner to see if there was a difference. The pigments didn't separate the same way they did due to a finer pigment size so that is good.

First we have a subtle all covering wash that was cleaned up and a unwashed reference on the right.

Next we have the on I played on a couple of days ago with the red and yellow. In the middle there is a thicker application of the same and the first picture to get at heavier contrast. And on the right is a reference.

I think this is a pretty good start and since you can always go back and apply a second round you can fiddle with it until you are really satisfied with the results.

Next up I think I will try it with some DeathWing Terminators.

Back to the painting, this is pretty much the first proper painting I have done in a few years...

The camera and the lighting is killing the subtle preshading but this is actually quite a few colors to get to "regular bonewhite". In person it looks pretty good so I will continue this method even though its pretty labour intensive.

  • Primer - Vallejo Grej
  • Preshade from below - VMA Black
  • Prehighlight from top - VMA White
  • Undercoat - VMC Dark Ocre
  • Basecoat - VGC Bone White

Time for an update on the experiments...

Last night I put a glosscoat on them and this morning I applied some wash, I was pretty careful and it was a pain. Afterwards the mini looked quite silly.

Then after waiting about 2 hours I started the cleanup, or blending phase as I was suggested to think of it as. It was easier than I thought it would be but pretty time consuming. I used a brush with spirits to blend and then a dry q-tip to remove the excess.

Now I am not completely done but this is as far as I have come sofar. In some places I had a really hard time cleaning up but after a matt coating I can always go back with bone white to highlight again.

Just a quick comment on the oil wash - to me it looks like your wash was a bit too thick. It should run almost from itself from the brush into the recesses.
