So I've started a new project which I thought I'd share.

I've got an article outlining my plan, but the long and short of it is to do an army whose core models can be used throughout the war.
http://www.breakthroughassault.co.uk/2014/03/project-finland.html

Anyway here is the first unit for this, hope you like it

So cool, my friend is collecting these so looking forward to fighting them a lot more than I have. Some cool guerrilla style rules in that book.

Those models look immaculate. Really looks like frosty grass and so on. Jealous haha

Certainly looking at your other ones.

Very good looking but I'd suggest a bit more greyish color on helmets as these look just too green.

http://www.varusteleka.com/en/product/finnish-m-55-steel-helmet-used/10341

This is the same helmet used by the troops in Winter War and Continuation War and supplied by Germany at the time. Though these were also used after the war and hence the model designation M/55. But it's the same helmet with the same color used.

Yep, I'd go with a grey shade on the helmets, to reflect the German origin. Some green helmets occured, though, when captured from Russians etc., but it seems that most of the Winter War helmet stock were early grey German models. Most green helmets appeared after 1940, in the Continuation War. I believe most of the Winter War helmets were dabbled with white paint or camouflaged otherwise, anyway.

Looks nice, though. If you want some extra fun on the basing, you could also represent some deep snow by spreading a thick layer of putty around the figures, and adding some stones, bushes etc. with some snow on top of them. Mid-winter snow can easily be knee-deep, but is easily compressed where you are stepping, so no need to be careful and it's ok if the soldier stands in a hole of snow. A thin layer of snow usually occurs only during early winter.

Cheers for the feedback guys. I originally have them grey helmets, but was informed they should be green! Also it helps break them up a little too.

I like the idea for the thick snow, I may avoid it for the infantry, but I like it as an idea for the artillery and heavy guns perhaps

Actually, the helmets (at least partly) were greenish - IIRC colour was "kenttäharmaa" (field grey) but which actually was more like green than it was grey (though it wasnt green either, most likely basic colour was grey which was toned with brown and green) - helmet in that varusteleka link is legit, but should be noted that first of all, its in post war congifuration (I have no idea were those actually repainted after the war when they got new interiors from 1955 onwards - or on the other hand, were they repainted at all during the war if the colour was allready "about right") and old as hell, so the colour might have faded.
But it is true that troops camouflaged their helmets, pretty much with anything, from paint to mud and cloth hoods.

And few notes about the actuall helmets too - first of all, if these are winter war-era finns, then the helmets are most likely either older german type (m16 - WW1 era, either bought from france surpluss storages in 1919 or from german during 1920s, in total roughly 90 000 units) or hungarian m38s. The m16 in german service was painted to pale, matt finish, olive drab/green, and I have no idea were those repainted when entering finnish service - if not, then "your green" is good enough.
Another source for "germanic" helmets before continuation war and interim peace was hungary, (model 1938 - copy of german m35) first ones being aquired in february of 1940 - I have no idea about the colour of these, propably green: one which is preserved in armoured museums collections is in glossy green configuration with yellow "Arrows of Lagus"-insignia.

To note, the colour of "actuall" german helmet M35 which appeared after winter war but before continuation war - before 1941 produced ones were following this glossy greenish tradition, but from late 1941 onwards the colour changed to glossy grey, and from 1942 onwards, to matte grey.

Good article about german military helmets and limitedly their service in finnish army - sadly in finnish, but includes few pictures of helmets in orginal condition.

Look very nice! The snow effect is great, can I ask what you used to achieve it?

And great that you have used the coolest looking aircraft in FoW

How are you planning on expanding now?

Cheers. The snow is done by painting the base grey (army painter uniform) heavy white drybrush, then when I apply the snow I mix water and white paint with the PVA and use a mix of GW snow and gf9 snow.

Currently I have another infantry platoons and HMG's in the go

The figs look great, you've managed to get nice contrast to them even with the white bases.

I dont know much about the Finns besides roughly what happened and so on. But did they just quickly put the grey paint over the Green as it looks like its peeling off.

Pretty good painting man.

It wasn't always paint. A lot of the times it was whitewash, an inexpensive paint or stain made from lime and chalk dissolved in water and it wasn't very durable, washing or wearing off quite quickly.

Very nice tanks. I think they need a bit of stowage on them like a scratch built cooking stove to keep them warm or a winter camo sheet ?

Thanks for the feedback, the next tanks for this project will have stowage, but I was less a fan on these guys due to the smaller size of the tank - stowage almost felt overwhelming

Amazing work. The only thing even close to criticism I have would be that in the huge shots the buildings look a little odd without snow on their roofs. The army however, looks really, really good. And great effect of the whitewash chipping and wearing away.
