Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Magic resistance provides a ward save, and the ward save is only usable against spells and spell effects but also for some reason often costs more than a regular ward save.

My proposed rule is that magic resistance is not a save, its a "resistance" in the same way FNP in 40K is not a save and applies where save do not such as for the Riptide.

As a resistance it should protect against spells and spell effects even those that ignore saves, test against a characteristic or removing or debuff models without a dice roll. Dwellers and Purple Sun are good examples of these. This would make magic resistance useful, would make sense and would do something to help limit overpowered spells in 8th.

This has come up...a LOT. The problem isn't so much MR, it's the spells. But the spells do serve a purpose, and it is to make people not create 1000pt deathstars. MR transfers from one model to the entire unit if a character has it. So with one purchase of an item, you can protect an infinite number of models with a ward save that mitigates one of their only threats.

MR should be a little better, but if it could block everything it would be unbelievably powerful.

Agree with Duke, you need to remember the first thing anyone does with a rule change is try to break it, so can you imagine a ogre gut star that cant be damaged by magic? that then can only be hurt in 1 phase OR in combat.... where the unit wants you to be. MR is good but not over powerful as EVERYTHING should be

Its hard to get better than a 4++ with magic resistance, also for unit buster spells a 4++ will only save half the deaths, which would be an awful lot of casualties.

It doesnt 'block everything' also spells like dwellers punish those who dont abuse lists by creating death stars.

MR stacks with wards. Which means characters could become effectively immune to magic. And a ward doesn't have to be 4+ to be unbelievably worth its cost.

If MR = ward to all spells, I guarantee people would make deathstars and plop in MR.

You still have dispel scrolls and miscasts and winds of magic. It's not like lvl 6 spells are auto cast and easy to get off.

The law of unintended consequences is such that there are a bunch of units around who have MR and it wasn't considered very powerful. So it was given kind of as a freebie. Like Flesh Hounds of Khorne, which are already a pretty decent unit, would have a 2+ ward vs. all magic. That certainly isn't factored into their cost.

It's too powerful. They made MR they way it is at the Army Book level. Any changes would need to be at the BRB level. Meaning, lower the cost of the items and/or make the spell lists different. But keeping it all the same and extending coverage would be pretty bad.
