Hey Dakka!

Im starting up a Crimson Fists force, i always like the look and they are more shooty oriented than say the Orks that have my main army from 01 to 06 when i took a hobby hiatus and from december last year when i picked the hobby up again till now.

Before the Orks, from the end of 2nd ed till 00 or so i was a Blood Angels Player, i still have a small force painted up but a friend of mine also plays them so i want to differentiate, both aesthetic and play style.

Ive painted the first tac squad from my army, AOBR stuff for cheap on ebay.

Heres how they turned out:

After i took this pic i went back and painted the SGTs left hand red, all eye lenses are painted but it doesnt show in this pic, i think its because of the lighting and image enhancement i did.

In the end i probably wont be using the flamer guy or this sargeant tho as i dont see any flamers in my list currently and i dont like bare heads or tabards.

I might go back later and put shoulder icons on, i cant free hand and i cant use transfers but i figure GS casting would be a viable option.

To continue building up the army i bought a bunch of minis second hand, they were pretty horridly painted so to strip em i build this:

Lego technics, a jam jar, some denatured alcohol and few pinches of sand for scrubbing action, it gets rid of most the paint, just need a toothbrush for the crevices.

It worked pretty well and in an evening i had stripped 50 marines down to just the remains of primer that wont let of the plastic, no worries, ill just prime them a little lighter than i do with new new models.

My intention is to have most of the weapon options i might need magnetized, i could get the special weapons loose from most of the minis but not all.

I decided to start with 8 bolter guys, a melta guy(that i couldnt get the melta loose from without risking its destruction) 2 sgts that got their gun hands magnetized and 5 missile launcher guys in a batch.

I modified some of the poses and reattached some shoulder pads that had come off in the stripping tumbler.
The previous owner hadnt been a master of the glue thankfully.

Yesterday i got started with the basecoats on them and after three of them i was getting annoyed with the paint drying out on my palette.

So i built a wet palette:

I gotta say its amazing, i can really see why people swear by them, it cuts down on time by not having to muck about rehydrating the paint drying out on the palette and just putting the paint on it and swirling it around a bit makes it the perfect consistency for applying to the mini, goes on really thin, might need a second coat some times but its so worth it as the paint is so even this way.

Anyways, i finished all the kantor blue armour basecoat yesterday.

Today i drybrushed with the old enchanted blue for armour highlights:

Then i went on and washed em all down with drakenhoof nightshade to mellow the bright, almost ultramarine blue they got for the drybrush and add some shadows as well:

So this is where im at for now.

The minis i already have that i intend to paint for this army:
Pedro Kantor, wont be using the original model tho, ive got the 25 year spec ed marine, Pedros gun arm and backpack fit nicely on him so im leaning towards this option.
10 Sternguard to start with, built from the 2nd hand tacs i have, they are all gonna have Mk8 chest plates because i like the look, they will have bolters with sights and half AOBR terminator storm bolter box mags to show the special ammo capacity as well as pouches, grenades and some other embellishments to show they are more than regular tacs, half or so will have magnetized hands for combi or special weapons.
An Iron Clad dread, ive got one of the old plastic kit dreads(from before there were iron clads) as well as the AOBR one, just gotta convert up some extra armour and either a chainfist or seismic hammer for either one of them, hurricane bolter arm ordered.
Two 10 man tac squad, magnetized options.
A Dev squad with 4 missile launchers, a sarge and some filler dudes, gonna paint up the other heavy weapons i got as well, 2 las cannons, 2 or 3 heavy bolters, 1 plasma cannon.
2 2nd hand rhinos, they are gonna get magnetized top hatches and side doors for razorback, predator and maybe whirlwind options. One is gonna get magnet options for Stalker configuration, magnetized front and side armour that comes in the stalker kit. Stalker bits ordered.

Have a good evening!

Half for the fun, half for the function

Ive just had a halfway break from fixing up the black on the batch at the moment, had to go buy some dinner and mail some letters.

Back to painting now

You get a deal on magnets someplace?!

I do like the fact you're making everything modular. Playing WYSIWYG is great and it really is a cost saver to just swap out weapon loadouts instead of having more mini's or play counts-as. Good call, sir.

I look forward to more!

Are you kidding me?

Magnets cost almost nothing on ebay, i bought 500 2mm diameter and 1mm thick, small enough to fit inside wrists and between combi weapons halves for the equivilent of 6.3 bucks with free shipping.

Thanks!

My eBay Kung Fu is weak. It's never the first place I consider looking for bits and bobs, and apparently to my disadvantage.

Thanks for the tip!

Hehe, "buy now" "sort by price+shipping, lowest first."

I know some modelling stores are selling them with a mark up higher than GWs minis and thats just mean

Got the black done, gonna go on to do the red, metal, leather and grenades tomorrow i hope.

Question about the casing on their guns:
Should i paint them green like i have on the missile launcher?

Might look nice with some more colours on them.

Finished off these today:

Of course theres always more that could be done but for now im happy with these.

Dunno if im gonna try and build what i need for the Ironclad, go at the two rhinos(got turret mounts in the mail today and ive got two twin HBs from Land Raiders, ie Razorbacks), start on the Sternguard or whatever, we'll see

Its 4am here and im off to bed, hope i wont get any work today

Got one of my bitz orders today, DV Tac squad, really nice models, i removed the DA logos on the shoulders and some other small details.

The Sarge got a magnetized wrist, a headswap and a mk6looking chest plate from the old chaos marine box.

Im reasonably sure everyone on here has seen these minis before but here is the sarge, marines with plain shoulder pads are in the background.

Its late again over here, 0340, good night!

Looking really good! I started out with Crimson Fists, but my motivation went down the drain. Seeing these has made me want to pick up the blue and red paints again!

Plus I still haven't painted Pedro!

I like the fact you've used a darker blue too. Looks really good.

Thanks!

I like the darker style for my fists, its just kantor blue with an enchanted blue drybrush and then a drakenhoof wash, really simple!

Hey all!

Yesterday night i built up and primed the last basic marines i need to complete my tac squads and dev squad.
The only thing im missing is a Combi Melta for one of the sarges but that should be sorted shortly as his ranged weapon hand is magnetised.

Today i painted on the Kantor Blue for the base of the armour, drybrushed with enchanted blue for highlights and then washed it down with drakenhoof nightshade to mellow and blend it nicely.

Pic didnt turn out so well but hey, its progress

On a side note ive been scrounging parts for an airbrush setup, ive got it all put together but as it turns out the compressor i got was a dud, will post details about it when ive got one thats working.

I finished up the batch i was working on last night.

Here are most of the DV marines

Here are pics with the other units plus the complements painted in this batch:

And here is a group shot of what ive got done for this force this far:

With the exception of still needing a combi melta on the sarge in the lower right squad, these are done for now.

Maybe ill put some work into converting that aobr dread into an ironclad now? dunno

Thanks!

Ive been Ironclading up my AOBR dread a little.
I might make the leg plates more angular and maybe plate the front of the sarcophagus if i find something to detail it with.

plasticcard is really hard to photograph so i drew in the edges of the detailing on the plates.

Initially i was thinking id run it with Hurricane Bolters just because i love the idea of bolters, a hail of tiny, mass reactive missiles bombarding my the target i just had it drop pod in next to.

However after more reading and thought im think im gonna run him with fist and hammer plus two heavy flamers to bathe his quarry in burning promethium the turn he arrives.

The flamers could also be a big help if he gets charged on the turn he has to stand waiting before being allowed to charge in himself.

Also, i got the combi weapon for the sarge missing one, gonna be painting it up soon

Did some work on my DV libby, as noted earlier in the thread i do not like bare heads.
(or cloth/robes/tabards but i dont think i can remove it from this mini and still have something that looks alright)

The stock sword arm looks really awkward and has a DA logo so he got a new arm and a fist icon.
The wrist has a magnet so i will be able to make options, when i find a nice maul he is sure to get it.

To put a regular helmet on him i broke out my rotary tool and carved the original head and cowl out of the psychic hood.

Ive got an old metal libby with a staff lying around, i might try to convert that one to have a helmet as well, its only got a tabard so i might be happier with it if i can do a nice job on getting a helmet on it.

Hey Guys!

Havnt been doing much for a while, festivals and work getting in the way but today i sat down, magnetized the arms for the dread, primed it and two rhinos/razorbacks.
Also preshaded a rhino, figured i wanted to do a step thingie as a reference for myself.
Only got TLHBs left unused from Land Raiders for the Razorbacks, i ordered two turret rings off ebay so i can change them into RBs, might go for some 3rd party options later.

This is the second thing ever im using my airbrush on.

The first is an Ork jet, i can put a pic of that up as well but it isnt really related to this Crimson Fist force.

Hopefully im gonna go on with the other rhino and the dread after this post.

Anyways, here are the pics:

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Good morning all!

I finished preshading last night and got on to the basecoat after breakfast.

Im using VMA Blue Angels for the main colour and where i felt they needed some extra highlight i put some VMA French Blue on.

This is so fast! it took less than three hours to get from preshaded to this!

Onwards!

Got the lascannons put together, basecoated, metal parts undercoated black, black parts painted black.

Tried using masking for an arrow on the left rhino and a stencil on the right rhino for a fist on the top hatch, the fist doesnt look great so either i will paint it over and go for an arrow there as well or try something else.

Next im going at the metals for all the stuff and red fists and eyes on the marines, after that i guess its oil wash time.

Hey all!

Been hard getting to sitting down and painting over the last few weeks but ive gotten the metals, a gloss coat and the oil wash on the vehicles and dread.

Did some work on the stenciled top hatch and tried airbrush plasma effect for the first time.

Thinking of doing something like the plasma light effect on the headlights and searchlights but i dont know which colours to use, i dont want it looking plasma.

Im pretty much done with these now except for the stormbolter and possibly OSL on the lights.

Been putting together a drop pod yesterday and i gotta say its a bit annoying

I put together a drop pod, it was kinda annoying.
The Doors are magnetized in the tips, weapons are also magnetized.

Ive left the interior loose, might actually magnetize the bottom part with the doors to the top part with en fins, engine and weapon mount to be able to switch the harnesses in and out if im using it marines or a dreadnought.

I primed it a couple of days ago and started the preshading, today i finished preshading and got the blue on with highlights, started working the metals.

When the metals are done it will be getting oilwashed, some detailing and weathering.

Heres how it looks right now:

Thanks!

Im very happy with how those turned out

Ive been continuing with the drop pod today and ive come the conclusion that the next time i paint a drop pod im gonna paint the fins and engine separately before putting them together.

That way i could airbrush the metal on the engine and the parts the doors close up against.

While I use a regular brush, not an airbrush, I paint drop pods mostly unassembled. The doors, fins, central pillar & harnesses, and the engine block, are separate. Too many bad angles and nooks to get a brush into otherwise.

Did you use a stencil or just freehand those markings? Looks nice.
