I recently started getting into hordes, and warmachine because I like flaming priests. The way I see it, I can play against myself, or teach my brother how to play and still have both armies I liked. I just wanted a general consensus on whether or not the stuff I was going to buy is balanced against each other. Above all else, I want both armies to be able to fight each other, full strength or not, and be fun for both sides.

Legion of Everblight:
Lylyth
Carnivean x1
Shredder x4
Strider x6 + Officer+ musician
Angelius x1
Shepard x1
Seraph x1
Hex hunters?
More warbeasts?

Protectorate of Menoth
Kreoss
Crusader x1
Revenger x1
Repenter x1
Temple Flameguard x10 + Officer
Choir x6
Holy zealots x10 + Monolith bearer

I think I have a good start for my armies that I want. The only thing I am unsure about, is if I am building my Legion army good. I have always heard their supposed to be beast heavy but honestly have very little idea...

A few other things I was wondering about:
1. Do I need to buy both rule books, one for hordes and one for warmachine?
2. Is there an ally system like in warhammer 40k

No, there's no formal ally system as in Warhammer 40k. You get mercenaries and minions which will work for different factions. You'll find a list for the different units here: https://battlecollege.wikispaces.com/MercTab (it's reasonably up to date)

I really need to stay away from the 40K forums.

The legion setup looks pretty good but I have some minor changes that might help you be more versatile early on.
1: Rather than the seraph, which is a frail heavy warbeast that specializes in low power, get a plastic heavy warbeast kit and some magnets instead. That is the easiest kit to magnetize and the extra option of ravagore, scythean, or second carnivean is potent.
2: Don't worry about the hex hunters for the time being. They are a good unit but you won't need two units right away.
3: Get a second warlock. Lylyth is good but she can't handle a large pack of beasts well. Try someone like Absylonia or Thagrosh the prophet once you get beyond battlebox games.
4: Speaking of battlebox games, don't be afraid to start small and slow. The game scales well enough that you can learn the rules at low points and still have fun.

P.S. Your protectorate list is only 30 points and your legion list is 32 before the question marks. I assume you were aiming for 35.

I have a small menoth force, but rarely play them. But I do play against Menoth now and then. So from the perspective of someone who plays against them here are some thoughts.

Menoth has a few solos that can help them out. Vassal is good. Covenant is popular, so are the paladins. Not sure how well they work with Kreoss or not.

May want to consider some mercs like Eiryss, Gorman or Rhupert as well.

Other than that when you are ready to make the jump to 50 points you probably want to start looking at a second unit. Maybe Exemplar Errants. They are the menoth unit I least like to face up against.

Other thing I always like to do is look at other casters. But if you are happy with Kreoss then don't sweat it.

For menoth you should always take as many wall paladins as possible, because they have warjack level attack/defence for the cost of most solos [2 pts]

This isn't true at all. Paladins are solid pieces, not excellent but solid. 13/21/5 is good for shrugging off weak attacks but crumples fast against WM grunts. Vilmon gives them a great little schitck but one that has narrowing space to operate in the face of more magic weapons making it into the game every release.

They hit like trucks on the charge, but can't stance on the charge and 13/16/5 isn't all that resilient even against low POW attacks.

In the right match-up, supported by the right caster they can be very powerful. They're nowhere near auto-include level though.
