Hey guys! I enjoyed being able to post WIP photos of terrain here last year as we ramped up for the Golden Throne GT, so now that terrain building/repairing is in full swing for 2014 I thought I'd start up again.

The GTGT is an annual three-day event held in the San Francisco Bay Area. This year it's being held on August 1-3 at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton.

We have a few fairly straightforward goals this year:

  • To improve the overall presentation of tables at the GTGT (better paint jobs, repairs, improved ruined building bases, etc).
  • To build some unique, cohesive table themes.
  • To guarantee every table has adequate terrain, including a combination of ruins, area terrain and line of sight blockers.

  • Here's my first photo; it's a work-in-progress design that we'll end up making a few dozen copies of to block line of sight. I'll add a flat roof, possibly with some sort of rail or generator on it, and shingle the sloped sides.

I put a roof on the first building and put the walls together on a second in the same style. The slight gap on the sloping section of the roof is okay because I'm going to cover it with shingles, anyway.

A while back I was messing around with scratch-built ruins and came up with this behemoth. It's too big to be practical at about 14 inches wide by 14 inches tall and 14 inches deep, but I figured I'd finish it off anyway. The sides don't have windows and the lower windows on the front facing are 4 inches high, which means this thing does a pretty solid job of blocking line of sight. It still needs a base -- none of the MDF squares I had already cut out are large enough.

I spent some time adding bases to and repairing broken GW terrain today. Progress is all that matters, right?

A couple of brief updates tonight:

I spent some time painting and flocking a crate of hills that were cut and textured but not finished last year. This is about half of them.

Now THIS is what I'm excited about. Watch Fortress Kasp, a Deathwatch fortress overrun by Tyranids that's the centerpiece of our new Siege of Kasp narrative event at the GTGT Prime! This is the first shot, where I was just sizing everything up. It's going to be challenging to build this multi-level, playable fortress on a 4x4 board in a way that allows me to get it through the door when I'm finished. I'm expecting to use several wooden dowels and magnets along the way.
