So I have had various Warmachine battleboxes and what-not sat assembled on my shelves and on my to-do list for coming up to two years now and I still haven't played my first game of WM yet, which is shameful. In the absence of anyone local to teach me, I have to play myself and learn the rules myself which has all been a bit intimidating and I don't fancy flicking backwards and forewards through a rule book and getting something wrong.

So the question is, are there or do PP make available some form of starter rules, kind of like the ones that many games companies print on a bit of A4 and include with minis to give people an introduction to the rules? Failing that, any ideas if there is such a thing where someone has produced say an 'example' game demonstarting the rules for a beginner? Or a 'your first game' type walkthrough?

Depending on when you bought them, one of those starter boxes may have contained the MK2 Quickstart rules, but either way that page has the PDF version.

Excellent, that may well do the trick, thank you.

As someone starting out, I tried using those quickstart rules and found them lacking. They are rather unclear on a lot of things, especially how units work, and I got really frustrated. I ended up reading the full rule book cover to cover then going back. I had a much easier time there. But maybe I'm just a slow learner.

Those rules are only for what is in the starter sets. They're not designed to be used with anything other than Warcaster/lock + Battlegroup.

I'll admit, I stole the rules from the internet - but I can't recommend that, especially since your store probably sells the rulebooks.

the starter rules work just fine for your warcaster and battlebox.

BWAHAHA!

We had a similar issue, but I found this free set of quick-reference sheets from a guy on the Privateer Press forums just for this purpose:

I'm in the same boat as you filbert with most of my games.

I've just started digging out my Warmachine minis, painted my Khador so far. Cryx are next on the list next then Its time to try a game with the starter box's.

The best thing I found so far as I found starting with just the rules a bit much is this series of videos on you tube from miniwargaming. I watched them all in one sitting about an hour and they really got me wanting to try the game and gave me a good understanding on how it plays. I can now look back at the rulebook and actually understand what stuff means lol

Do NOT use Mini-wargaming as anything beyond relief of boredom. They always have some major rule mistakes. Plus they can't remember their own stat cards or even unit names. They also tend to forget spell effects and special rules that are really crucial. That's before the glaring tactical errors, at least they can show you how NOT to play certain units and models

As someone who actually knows what is going on, its beyond painful.
