I hate how you have to buy White Dwarf Issues 9, 10, 11 and 12 for a staggering total of 12.80 Euros to get the amount of IG related content that a single old WD would have bundled in the monthly release a year ago. Old WD price (that had already been steadily increasing over the years) was 8 Euros recently and you got 150 pages, while the new WDs combined yield a mere 120 pages.

And the fact that these are weekly releases means if you happen to not show up at your local GW every week, you might not get the chance to pick up the WD issue you wanted later. At least in the old WD you had 20 something days time to pick it up at your leisure.

WD is a sham, you are paying them to advertise to you with a couple of bare bones "articles" thrown in the mix.

I never subscribed, but I am sorry you have a product you no longer enjoy. It is nice that they are only $4 and can contain rules from time to time. I do like that a great deal.

I believe, though, that you hit the nail on the head of the point of the weekly White Dwarf. You must show up to GW every week.

I couldn't agree more, OP.

White Dwarf is for content. This might just be me going off, but I only buy something like that when it has content.

Example: Rules, special scenarios, FAQ's, beta-lists or modified-lists for armies, how to make terrain, painting guides, early previews of cool-looking stuff.

Old White Dwarf had a metric crapton of content. Now, it's not so good (although it's better than it has been in the near past). Of all the magazines I've looked at, only two really had the content to make purchase worthwhile- Issue 4 (Imperial Knight rules) and Issue 9 (Militarum Tempestus rules). Issue 8 fooled me with the nice picture of the Void Shield Generator, but it didn't include any rules and it was all total worthless B.S.

Overall, I call White Dwarf "The tome of stuff you can already find online for free", and give it a C+ for the two issues that were worth buying.

I never understood the appeal of the monthly White Dwarf thing. They show off the new stuff, sure, but they put them up on their own website the same day to look at for pre-order.

I like the new WD, because it means 4x more articles Im interested in (designing, painting, hobby, certainly not reports), but the week thing is simply annoying. I dont have time to come every week to shop, I dont want to read it in e-version... So far I got older WDs but I would like to have it in one montly issue.

For the price...whatever, its price of dinner for me and wife, so really no big spending in monthly calculations. And, honestly, if the difference three euros means so much to you, I wonder how could you afford expensive hobby as wargaming itself is (and have good advise - dont buy the WD).

Being optimistic´s worthless if it means ignoring the suffering of this world. Worse than worthless. It´s bloody evil.

Because that's not what WD should primarily be used for in this day and age. It should have great well written articles in it to compete with what is available for free on the Internet. GW should have professional photography setups and professional writers to be able to put out a quality piece.

Take a look at some of the older issues (or hell, even PP's No Quarter or Wargames Illustrated) to see how to do a decent monthly magazine.

A freind of mine lent me one of the recent copies.
Was appalled at the content tbh.
They had this section of "weapon of the week" or some such gak. I mean seriously? It was a picture of a lasgun or something with a 3 line description.

See, this in itself is not exactly a bad idea. They've got a good nugget for an excellent series here. PP does something similar in No Quarter with their "Guts and Gears" series (focusing on the history of a particular troop type, Warnoun or whatever), but it is far far more expansive than what you've described.

Oh no problem with the idea behind it, more fluff can only be a good thing. It was just poorly executed and felt so tacky.
I mean any one of us could have written better and done it more professionally.

I thought BL where trying to sell 5 pages of stuff about individual weapons for a couple of bucks, how on earth did GW let the WD team slip one in for FREE?

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

The new White Dwarf is GW's way of doing in print what they did to squad boxes like Dire Avengers, Cadians, etc.

Privateer Press' No Quarter blows it out of the water. Even the first No Quarter was better back when it came out than the White Dwarf of the same month, as they had already gone downhill from their glory of the early 2000's. Anyone even remember when you got carstock punch-outs that supplemented the games that were out at the time?

-The ruined Sister of Battle shrine?
-Battlefleet Gothic demo-rules with ships and markers?
-Epic cards?
-Warhammer Quest dungeon rooms that allowed you to play Blood Bowl underground in dungeons?
-The "Brewhouse Bash" game?

More like around 10. Early 2000s still had good stuff in there.

They have started bringing stuff back again at least (the return of painting articles was nice to see, those went missing for a while there).

Early 2000's still had freebies and cool articles by the staff that still seemed like they were huge fans like the ones we are. \

Or modelling terrain articles that DIDN'T utilize only official GW products? I still build ruined buildings according to the inspiration i got from the giant Stalingrad-esque table featured in White Dwarf, that had template ideas for making your own versions of the buildings.

Yeah, it didn't really start slimming down and losing stuff until sometime during 5th. So post 2008....so the last 6 years or so?

Man, I loved the old WDs. Every month: new fluff, 40k battle report (with diagrams, army lists, and fluff), fantasy battle report, LotR battle report, test rules, new scenarios, Golden Demon pics. $50 for twelve issues, each one was probably 100 pages. That was way back when GW still had an online forum.

That online forum didn't stick around for long from what I heard. But yeah the WD used to be really good value for money. At $4 an issue it's really not that bad now (it's got painting articles, they talk about what went into the design of specific models, talk about what influenced the design of new models, have people other than just Jervis writing articles talking about things (Phil had one about the house rules that the studio plays under, like trash talk basically needing to be "in character"), but the battle reports leave something to be desired. They're worse now than they used to be. :(

You can still buy older issues of the non electronic ones on the GW website for a short time, if you can't make it into the store. Although, if the local store doesn't sell those copies they have, they are required to destroy them as soon as the week is over, which kinda sucks.

With all of the places out there now that do recasting crap and all that these days, GW can't really go out there and go "here's how you make our stuff for _____ without using our products" to the hobbyist.

Yeah, I guess it's all part of the must push new weekly release thing. I don't understand why GW wouldn't at least go "these are the white dwarf's we have this month" or something and let them sit on the shelf for at least another week, or for the rest of the month in the physical store. Destroy them when it's time to sell a new visions or something. Weird.

Just need to find a comic store that sells it and set it up on a subscription like people do for their favorite comic issues. I have to show up once a month to pic up my WD mags, and don't have to rush in at the beginning of each week to make sure I get one anymore. Can't say I am that much happier about the content, though. I do still find the mag interesting enough to want to read it each week, at least for the time being. Dumped my Vision 'scipt after the first issue.
