As the title says I'm starting a CSM army and am trying to decide what units I'm going to start with.
I'm looking to spend $225-$250 at the retail price and here's a few Idea's I have. Should I chose one of these or do you have a better idea (very possible and likely because I don't really know the army well).

1:
Spoiler:
Demon Prince and wings ($47.25+$13.00)
Chaos Marines ($47.00)
Chaos Marines ($47.00)
Cultists ($12.00)
Cultists ($12.00)
Cultists ($12.00)
Codex ($60.00)
Total: $250.25

2:
Spoiler:
Sorcerer ($21.75)
Obliterators ($62.50)
Chaos Marines ($47.00)
Chaos Marines ($47.00)
Codex ($60.00)
Total: $238.25

3:
Spoiler:
Nurgle Demon Prince ($47.25)
Plague Marines ($55.0)
Cultists ($12.00)
Cultists ($12.00)
Cultists ($12.00)
Cultists ($12.00)
Cultists ($12.00)
Cultists ($12.00)
Codex ($60.00)
Total: ($234.25)

1. In addition, there are cheaper alternatives to GW for wings. $13 is a bit steep.

Unless you're going with some odd Daemon Prince kit, it comes with wings.

Questions for you.

1)how fast do you have to have it?
2) do you have to buy from GW direct?

because my suggestions would be a lord/termi lord. maybe go a DP with or without the wings if your starting out people would be ok with you saying it has wings and they arent shown...

buy some cultists off ebay, you can get them for roughly $1 a model.

oblits are great

Plague marines you can custom up if you wanted to from basic marines. means you would get twice as many for your $

CSM 20,000 Pts
Daemons 4,000 (ish)
WoC over 10,000
6000+ Pts

I selected: option 3

Reason 1: It is a thematic army, you will be playing Nurgle. Or Death Guard. Try to get a "rotten-sick" feeling on the cultists and it will look great on the table. I really like fluffy / thematic armies and this one could be one. If you invest time and dedication, you can get a cool-looking army.

Reason 2: It is strong. Plague Marines are perhaps the best option regarding "Marines". On the other side, basic Chaos Space Marines are currently quite a disappointment, really expensive for what they do. Cultists and DP are quite useful: that mass of Cultists work like a swarm, and the DP is a killing machine.

Problem: A lot of models to paint.

Options / Changes: I will take just five Cultists, that will be enough. With the points / money I will give wings to the DP. You want your big boy to get quickly where you need him. It is the hammer of your army.

Regarding money: The prices make me cringe a little bit. Try to get alternatives for wings, cheap cultists from ebay,...

Suggested next step: Obliterators with the mark of Nurgle are pretty good and will fit with your army´s theme.

Thanks for all the feed back everyone!

I will be getting them from a store that's fairly close to me that does a 20+% discount on the GW prices and I will be getting most of my stuff from there (they don't always have all of the Finecast individual characters).

Also I enjoy painting so that wont be too much of a problem.

Hi everyone.
I was looking over the three groups and I noticed a problem. What about vehicles. The third list doesn't really have anything to deal with av 11+.
Also I'm wondering if I put plasma or melta guns in the marine units (1st list) would that be enough to deal with the limited amount of vehicles at low points level?

Thoughts?

I like option 1 it's good variety and model count but I like the 3rd idea to but if you're going to take that many cultists I would suggest a Dark apostle to keep them from running easily

The third list have two tools to use with vehicles.
1) The Daemon Prince. It is an excellent AV14 vehicle killer. Get some wings and he is even better.
2) Plague Marines. I assumed you are giving them some weapons. Get plasma or melta. I recommend plasma, which is better for light vehicles and heavy infantry. The Daemon Prince should be enough to deal with anything really big.

Same goes for marines in lists 1&2. Getting no special weapons made your troops sad.

Also a 5 points flamer in a Cultist unit can make a big difference. You don´t need to be a great warrior to use a flamer.

What direction do you want to take them in? Certainly cultists aren't the only way to run chaos, but that appears to be the way you want to go. The question then is if you want more of a plague zombie giant pile of goobers, or if you want more of an alpha legion cultist screen for CSMs, or if you want more of a word bearers cloud of fanatic worshippers who are just there to hold things down while the demons show up and eat everything.

If you want the last one of those, then traitor guard might actually be a better fit than CSM.
