I have recently decided to restart my old chapter the cobra's fangs.
I dont have any photo's yet but... hey.
im thinking the colour scheme should be like murkey greens, browns and blacks... BUT i dont want to make it look too much like camo.
Any suggestions?
also im working on the iconography

If you keep your lines clean, you should be able to avoid the camo look, but with that subdued palette, you are never going to be far from it.

Other things that would help with a not-camo look would be a high gloss finish, if you go for that kind of thing. Or strong highlights and/or bight accent colors. Something that screams out “We’re not hiding!”

Another option might be some sort of heraldic quartering look. Something that points out that while you are using the camouflage colors, you are not using them for their intended use. Arctic/snow baseing would also say this: We choose these shades because those are our chapter’s colors, not to blend.

The high-contrast does help him stand out from the background. Are you planning on doing company marking on the shoulder trim? That would overwrite the bleached bone, but fill a similar role. Well, for some companies. White/Yellow/Red from 1st-3rd are distinct, but the green/black from 4th-5th would not help.

the chapter markings are gonna be on the left shoulder pad.
and theyl be either bleached bone or skull white to stand out from the black. i dont really know where to put the company markings... maybe on the right shoulder pad or the leg/knee

ah ya i is trying to get some green stuff so i can sculpt the chapter icons as my free handing suck. The reason why this chapter is gonna be mostly dark is because I am more comfortable with darker schemes as they're less likely to f****** up (flibjib up). even my tyranids are mostly dark (even though the skin is dry brushed bright red everything else is really really dark)

FYI this is when it was a WIP the chain sword has been removed and a bit of free hand has been added to the power fist. This is also a pic from before i updated the colour scheme and so i'm treating it as half done. please don't review it harshly as i painted it a long time ago.

ok i have made 2 test models for the chapter.
the first is "quick and dirty" which is for ifantry models and non characters. it's basically a basecoat with a wash and dry brush.
The second model is "slow and steady." it is basically a undercoat wash layer (lighter colour) wash another layer and then a drybrush.
The first picture is the quick and dirty whilst the second is the slow and detailed. the second is gonnna be for named characters and GMS models.

You using a flash? The lighting is very harsh, makes it hard to tell shade/detail.

Looks a little chalky. That might be the light, or you may need to thin your paints. I like the purity seal on the second guy, well done. The freehand on the knee could use some work. Freehand is always tough to get right, even on flat surfaces.

To stand out with the whole IM NOT USING CAMO theme i did try to paint the gun casing orange... but it turned out to look a bit rusty? and to sort out the fact that they aint camo. i'm gonna base them as if they're fighting in a desert. Ill upload the pic of the weapon at lunch time.
as for the free hand it's really hard for a noob like me to free hand stuff... maybe ill buy some green stuff and mould the chapter symbols out of that? or i could print some out on paper and glue em to the pads?

looking back I missed one of your edits. Third company is red, 6th is orange. The shading on that picture is a little off. Either would work, as we are just looking for a high contrast color. And not every chapter follows those rules absolutely, so you can do what you like.

Flamer guy looks pretty good.

The Tau guy needs to be shot a few times, then set on fire. The Imperium of Man does not need xenos scum! Where is your chaplain!? Xenocidal ravings aside, he’s fine for what he is. Just personally not my cup of tea.

From painting to mechanics:
What chapter tactics are you planning on using? How big an army are you aiming for? What is your build/buy strategy, and how far are you going?

The old battleforce is not a bad box, but some of the parts need some work. I think adding one of them helps round out your collection, but multiples get redundant fast.

For most lists up to 1,500 points, you are not going to need more than 2 full tac squads. So you don’t want to over buy basic power armor marines. That said, extra bodies can fill out dev squads, be given spare weapons to swap out, be converted to sternguard, etc. There is almost always something to do, but if you have limited funds, don’t invest too much into them.

The scouts are the bolter/CC kit, not the snipers. What to give them and how to use them depends a lot on what CT you are using. In most cases, picking up a landspeeder storm will assist them greatly.

Magnetizing backpacks is a good place to start. If you plan on going drop pods, you might want assault marines on foot. If you want to start down the road of magnetic magic, I’d recommend getting a pack of 2mm magnets and a pinvice. It’s not that expensive, and will save you a lot in the long run. I like assault marines, give them a pair of flamers and go around burning things in the backfield. A chaplain with a jump pack turns them from a bully unit to a real threat. Nice, but not required.

Rhinos: metal boxes that keep the small arms and baleflamers off while getting you to your objective. Might explode from time to time, but still worth it IMHO.

update... i is also gettin command squad and razorback... so now i can either use 2 rhino's per battle or 2 razorbacks or a combination of both .
sorry about the short post but my elder sister needed to use the computer so i was rushed with what i could type.

I have found a primarch for my chapter to follow witch fits with the whole "flame stuff to the death" vibe that i want to give them... VULCAN of the salamanders!!!! This also fits in with the fact theme that they only fight when all other forms of resolving conflict fail.
using a lot of Greek names in my chapter.
also work on making the captain is done
and 1 combat squad also rolled off the production line today (all primed and ready to be painted)
most of my time however is spent making my lil brothers birthday prezzie... a big boxa nids... with a tyranofex just to make him happy. (15 gene stealers, 8 of each gaunt, 3 warriors and a carnifex)

Nice looking batch of marines. I generally leave the guns off of the cross-chest guys for ease of painting, but a lot of people just fully assemble.

The rumors are looking pretty solid that some form of new rulebook is going to drop at the end of the month. I might hold off on picking that up for a little bit.

Codex should be safe for a bit though.

Hello again boys and girls flibs back... at least for now.
I have been busy, i have played my space marines against my brothers nids and i have to say that a squad of 5 assault marines ARE THE BOMB they tore through my brothers entire left flank in about two turns... they the proceeded to fly to my devastator squads aid and destroy a infiltrationg group of gene stealers on the way... with only one casualty from about 3 games i really love them and i am really thinking of turning em into vanguard at some point (my lil bro and i are in the middle of a tornement, the score is 3:0 in my favour )

A full battle company is a worthy goal. Take your time though. If you add a unit or two at a time you have the time to paint them, and don’t bust your wallet. Also, pick up bargains where you can.

And rather then full rhinos, I’d probably recommend a hybrid drop style. Probably 5 pods 5 rhinos/razors. Also realize that your assault and dev squads are probably not going to spend a lot of time in their transports, so you can prioritize them accordingly in your acquisition list.
