I painted one of these Chaos Warriors back in the day and it was one of my favorites. I all of a sudden feel like digging it out again.

I was 5 when this issue came out, I was about 12 when a family friend drilled the kind of fluff found here into my head. I was scared of Space Marines back then, they were far removed from heroes. But it was the particular dark and unsettling quality of 40K back then that I couldn't turn away from. Wish Space Marines were still portrayed more in that light and waaay less uniform. O_o

So here I am, 25 now and still painting them. Cheers Kyoto was good to reminisce.

Good to see this old stuff out again! I used to subscribe to WD back then and still have all these old issues somewhere up in the loft. Issue 100 was my last (which also coincided with my last year in Uni and therefore the end of my proper "free time") and I cancelled my sub after that as I just hated what Bryan Ansell had turned GW into. I totally missed out on GW in the '90's. Which probably explains why I am still a little sane!

Hell, I was 17 when that issue came out. I am an Ancient One among the fetii. Nice to see a nostalgic post like this.

Also, the Blood Angels commander is not in gold armor. His armor is painted in a splotchy desert camouflage scheme. Those are tans and browns, and not shades of gold on the armor. It’s been a while, but I think there is also an old pic with a Blood Angels Rhino painted in the same scheme. That was back in the day when Blood Angels knew what camouflage was. Silly old paint schemes.

That guy is the absolute epitome of a Space Marine, in my mind! As soon as I got some RTB01s I built one up in exactly the same pose for my Ultramarines.

Age 16.
This Issue was one of the first I'd picked up. I was already playing warhammer fantasy 3rd edition at the time, and this issue had me totally hooked on the game. I bought lots of the stuff as it was coming out.

Notice if you read the marine fluff article, the marines names: Tork, Dolenz, Jones - the Monkees!

I used to love looking at the miniatures names on the big layout sheets, there were always lots of in jokes in the naming of the miniatures, which would sometimes carry over into the stories at the time as well.

www.nobleknight.com has a good selection of old White Dwarfs and Dragons, if you can figure out the issue number you can find out what models were released on your birthday.

Always interesting to look at the old stuff, particularly the Golden Demon applicants, back when everything was painted in super-realistic shades, rather than the cartoony stuff style we have now.
