Wow. Your GS sculpting skills are literally jaw-droppingly good. I like the Rogue trader a bit more than "Bequin," but I can scarcely beliee she started out in Daemonette-hood

So I finally got the Rogue Trader primed today. I made the massive mistake of using GW white primer. To my horror it left 60% of the model covered in small air bubbles.

Here's how he now looks after alot of work, saved from the horrors of GW white primer after 2 hours of careful sanding and milliput washes.

Painting begins tomorrow, seriously looking forward to it too!

Cheers,

Dante

Is the white really that bad?

I guess I should have thought about it before I got 3 bottles.

Great work anyway. Loving the future-wench.

For some reason the white primer kind of made the details sort of go away, it looks as if you used a cruder material to sculpt the whole figure or something.

No worries though, I know you will be able to fix it and turn him into a kick ass figure!

Ta guys.

Latest member of the gang to be started:

Early days but you can see where I'm going with the pose. He will be an ex-navy trooper.
Weapon will either be shotgun (boarding weapon) or hellgun, not sure yet.

More pics and blurb on him tonight. Also, cookie for first person to guess the base piece.

On the Smile-girl las-pistols: Consider doing the extras through painting (like an in-lay gold filligree), rather than GS. I think it would go with the whole "Delicate" but deadly theme.

Thanks for the comments lads.

You are all correct, the torsp is FW cadian tank commander, cookies for all!

@ Piousman - Yeah that was what I was leaning towards too, sculpted detail would just add to the width and take away from the delicate feel.

More soon moving permitting.

Bit more work done, mainly bulking out the legs and planning something for the raised leg to stand on. I was thinking grain sacks on a landing pad or a drugs cargo busted open etc. The legs will get knee pads and shin armour like kasrkin have. Side image shows the "lean" he has.

Dante

Progress pics of the first stage work on the kneepads and roughing out of the left foot. I've also tacked the shotgun I'm thinking of using into the position I have in mind. Think I might give it a proper stock though, but on the other hand, shorter is probably better in boarding situations. Decisions, decisions.

The cadian backpack plug and the ribbed cable hanging from the back will be turned into a short use, emergency rebreather which will have the mask hanging from the belt in the obvious gap.

Also, this weeks treats!

What a blast from the past the RT book is! The FW book has already begun to tempt me to buy a £200 airbrush and £200 compressor but both the misses and the wallet are saying "not yet!"....

Cheers,

Dante

Oh, is that FW book any good?

Or is it just highly highly aspirational stuff?

Anyhow, I'm loving the sergeant. At first I thought he had the skinniest of skinny chicken ankles, then I realised the bloom in the fatigues above the knee. Nice kneepads - I tried to get the same effect on a makeshift stormtrooper once, and it turned out horrible.

Stay safe,

Taking shape really nicely.

Although I must agree with "smiling Assassin" the left leg (or the one on the right in the pic.) definately needs some bulking up a bit.

In fact both boots could be a little bigger - when compared to the top of his leg - unless the idea is a sort of pantaloon look?

Not that I have any room to offer advice or criticism - your GS work is phenominal and makes my attempts look like a preschooler with play-dough.

Thanks for your comments guys, was beginning to worry it was getting real quiet around here!

Sorry I failed to point out before, the lower legs and feet are just the base stages and not representative in any way of the final shape or bulk. The left leg (raised one) isn't bulked fully yet either, the underside will be getting more mass through the sag of the trousers etc. It is just easier to do the kneepads before adding the trousers as obviously the straps for them will cause the material to crease and fold around them.

The boots when sculpted will add more bulk to the feet as I intend them to look quite heavy, sort of military issue. He will also possibly be getting shin armour too.

More later today.

Cheers,

Dante

Oops forgot to add,

@smiling Assassin - Yeah its a good book, I like it. Not as content rich as regular military modelling books but it does have a focus on FW mini's (obviously) and a lot of high quality pics of some really nice stuff.

Bit more work to show how the trousers are developed and to more clearly define what is first stage "foundation work" from final bulk and definition.

Should clear up the "skinny legs" concerns. Next stage is to define and bulk out the boots and then to the lower part of the trousers.

Cheers,

Dante

@ Death By Monekys - It's been mentioned a few times but its a fanatic head (one in stocks), shaved down and with new eyes and ears sculpted.

I love that this group started off as a one shot RT model, and has spawned an entire entourage of models.

Guess you can't help which project spark inspiration!

Looking great so far with the new guy.

Hey, glad to see that you´re still at it with this project. Nice progress on the GS. I find it sooo hard to sit and wait for the stuff to cure, it´s slow progress by necessity.

Looking forward to seeing the finished article.

(Oh, and by the way, I thought we were above actual posts just saying "bump" in here. That´s one of the reasons I like dakka....)

Thanks for the comments guys.

I've been busy moving in to a new flat (complete with painting/modelling room! pics soon) so haven't had the chance to work much on this lately. There is some slight progress since the last photo's, mainly just bulking out the trousers on the left leg.

I don't have internet set up yet in my new place so will be a bit sporadic in posting for the next week or so. Rest assured though, I'll keep taking step by step pics in the interim and blast them all on here when the broadband is in.

Any opinions/discussion on colour scheme and markings for the navy sgt are welcome, its something I've been mulling over lately. Can anyone recall how Abnett described the navy trooper uniforms in "Eisenhorn"?

Cheers,

Dante

If I remember correctly, they were just described as 'Black'

And, as fitting as it seems, I don't think that would look very good on it's own. Perhaps glossy armour, and pant-stripes to add some variety? (I have no idea what those are called)

Or something like... This? (except jagged, instead of blobby)

Maybe i just can't see a naval trooper in anything other than monochrome.. . . Could be a good contrast with the rest of the group though

I do like watching this thread, I was looking at the RT and his 'crew' and two ideas came to my mind for your consideration:

1: The gray-faced accountant type - since the RT himself seems to radiate ego and charisma, a dour looking executive officer in his retinue, the straight man and constant butt of his asides and jokes but actually makes the ships run and keeps the books up to date... (Gormanghast style retainer)
"Now now Mr Bleake, this isn't the time for your narrow minded whining about such matters as 'fuel and ammunition', take up your las pistol and come with me, For The Emperor!!!"

2: Fido - the RT dresses flashy, I am reminded of Victorian gentlemen explorers and could well imagine him being followed about by some rediculously overpowered killing-machine beastie, a Gentleman's best friend is his dog. Hulking xenos hound with cybernetic implants...
"Found 'm on Dusk XI, poor thing had an ork powerclaw stuck in his paw, pulled it out and sink me if he didn't lick me face and follow me home! Old bugger's been with me ever since!"

We Dakkanauts have a saying, "Yak created the Mosh Pit to train the faithful", one cannot go against the word of Yak...

Can't help but wonder about painting him in some good old nineteenth century uniforms, maybe Zouave style. Although I'm slightly disappointed he's lost the peg-leg

"From dis day to da ending of da world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
Us gitz, us happy gits, we mob of boyz;
For he to-day that smashes stuff wif me
Shall be my fellow Ork; be he ne'er so vile,
Dis day shall make him proppa Orky;
And umies on Armageddon now-a-bed
Shall think demselves accurs'd dat we're 'ere,
And be right scared uv anyfing green whiles any speaks
That fought wiv us upon Saint Ghazghkull's day."

@ Panhead - For some reason I thought he had described them as wearing grey uniforms and black armour but could be wrong.

They won't be wearing camo, no need for it in boarding actions. At the moment I am thinking either dark blue (navy!) for the fatigues and black plate, or a bluey grey (light) fatigue and black/dark grey green plate. The blandness of these colours will be offset by details such as squad, segmentum, ship etc markings on the armour and fatigues. It should also hopefully make the skin and weapon stand out more too.

Painting is a wee while off yet though so we'll see how it goes.

@MeanGreenStompa - Both excellent ideas and will be taken onboard. I had already thought of the "Fido" type character but the accountant is a great idea.

@Llamahead - Sorry to disappoint. It was never intended to be a peg leg, just part of my sculpting process of bulking out the armature in stages.

A peg leg, while probably looking badass and fitting with the naval theme, wouldn't have kept with the character I'm trying to develop. I imagine this guy to be highly active and a skillful combatant both armed and unarmed (a bit of a Harlon Nayl type). A peg legged cripple would have seriously impacted upon this image.

@ migsula - Glad to see you posting again mate, thanks for the praise and support.

Cheers,

Dante

Hmm.. you may be right. has been a while since i read the book.

Dark blue/black would look nice I think, Whatever you choose in the end, it should look fantastic!

Yeah. I'm not exactly sure why I suggested it. A primarily white scheme could be pretty interesting though! (if a little out of place)
