Awesome blog.
I really like the Rhino! Do you mind making a tutorial on that GS edging you did on the front? I've always wanted my Rhinos to have that.

Cool - I'll look into some 'extreme highlighting for these guys. I tried to do them similarly to the Zerkers, but the dark blue doesnt really suit this 'wash' method.

Cheers Linked & Person Person - I've been looking for an alternative to the GW spikes for a while now. I dont hate them, but they do break off all the time, and in some cases they just look impractical. I will do a tute on the spikes - but it might take me a while...

Tanks all for the kind comments and suggestions, it really helps keep me motivated.

OK - its been about 6 months since I did any updates - but dying computers, Borderlands on the PS3 and wedding plans have all conspired to delay me! So, I figured its well time to post what I have.

Firstly - I did some work on the thousand sons I painted before, taking on board some of the comments earlier (they did look a bit plain). So, I gave these guys a bit more of a hard edging highlight. I also finished the sorcerer, and tried new techniques on the force sword. Comments and criticisms are always appreciated!

Secondly, I continued work on the Alpha Legion Dreadnaught - Im happy with how the conversion turned out, now Im just trying to get the painting up to scratch.

Here's the paint job on the Plague Marine AC - not fully done yet!

And, for the final part of this update, my work on my Nurgle Daemon Prince (or Greater Daemon)! Its an inquistor model body (as usual), with spawn parts - I added the spawn wings in case I want a winged nurgle DP.

There is still plenty of greenstuff work to go on this guy...

Anyway, comments and criticisms appreciated! Cheers!

G'day folks - just a quick update as its the first bit 40k ive done in six months (damn study), a sinigle, lonely (slightly blurry) iphone photo of a small terrain peice that I have been going over with some weathering powders.

Please remember that this is my first time playing with weathering powders - so please feel free to be very critical, however please also provide some suggestions for improvement!

Steps:
This small peice was first roughly undercoated with black, then painted with simple watered down house paint (I bought a bunch of samples from Bunnings for almost nothing).
Once this was done I gave it a spray (using a $2 spray bottle) with a very thin mixture of black ink, water and a few drops of detergent. This effect was pretty subtle - I may skip it next time.
I then went over some of the detail with brass, bolt gun metal, and astronomicon grey (the skulls).
I washed some devlan mud over the bolt gun.
Finally, using the powder dry I brushed on -
- graveyard brown where I thought dust would gather
- rust orange where I thought moisture would accumluate causing oxidation &
- black where I felt soot and burn damage might have occured. I think I need to add a bit more of this.

Anyway, if you have useful tips for using weathering powders, please feel free to post them here, if you feel the inclination.

I had a lot of fun playing with these powders, and Ive got an entire city ruins to improve my skills, so I'll be posting more later.

Oh yeah, I got my weathering powders from Back2Base-ix (Buy Australian!) http://www.back2base-ix.com/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=73

Great looking chaos stuff so far, always enjoy fine looking chaos marines. Really like the scales on the alpha legion, really good effect.

Not so sold on the Cobra head on the dread, looks like it might just be sticking out too much if it was further back in or had a lower profile.

Other wise, lovin the way the nurgle demon prince is shaping up.

Thanks CoC - Im happy with the scales effect too - its time consuming tho, so I only get around to doing it every now and then.

I see what youre saying with the cobra head... although I may finish the paint job first, and go back and fix the head itself at a much later date.

Nurgle prince is waiting for some more greenstuff, but the obligitory scythe is getting started.

Cheers!

Also though i would post the final pics of the small weathered building Ive been doing - and note the difference after it has been hit with a layer of GW purity seal.

Unsealed pics:

Note how bright the green is on the brass paint. My wife suggested I had overdone the weathering a bit. I didnt disagree, and it was my first time trying.

However, after a small hit of purity seal:

These pics look very similar, but I think you can notice how the colours of the weathering powders have been 'knocked back' a bit, and are somewhat less 'overt'. I think that this has done them a favour, as the originals were a bit too intense.

Let me know what you think - comments & criticisms are welcome

First off I just would like to say that within this blog you can follow how much your skill with the brush has improved!

The weathering on the dread base was really well done.

The new piece is brilliant. A mix of powders is used to create a very convincing weathering effect that isn't too flat. My only critique is that I think the rivets could do with a bit of rusting.

Thanks for the feedback mate - I think Im getting a bit more patient, which is helping!

I think this blue terrain bit is 'done' for now (as Ive hit it with the purity seal), but alread started the next piece, and I'll try to be a bit more consistent with the small details.

Cheers!

Hi Folks - I thought that I better make sure my 1000th post was an update of the blog - so here it is: more weathering practice on a city ruin

The aim of this peice is to trial different weathering techniques really, but its also supposed to look 'really ruined', like its been bombed, been on fire and left to begin rusting. Comments, criticisms, and suggestions are (as always) welcome. Feel free to be critical, I'm a big boy. I will try to incorporate any good suggestions into the next ruined building.

Cheers

Please note Im still missing a decent camera, so this is on the iphone. Good enough to get the point across for my meagre skills tho.

Just a quick link being added - the following site (Massive Voodoo - awesome skills) is where i got some of the inspiration on this weathering.

Thanks Shrubs!

The posters were grabbed from the internet and simply printed off. If you check this warseer thread:
http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=138549
You will find 4 PDF documents - I grabbed these, printed them out (they are already an appropriate size) and then just cut them and glued them on. I then painted some black and brown washes on the edges for weathering and discolouration.

No probs Shrubs, and thanks

And thank you KMBKMB, Ive been neglecting the Alphas for a little while (got a little sick of them after all the greenstuff work), but I will be getting back to them soon!

In the mean time, Ive been trying my hand at batch painting - seeing if I could get some speed improvements. And I can confirm that yes, painting models in a batch is theoretically quicker - the problem is it gets boring. This means you put the paint brush down, and actually get less done! I have not completed my experiment however and will continue to see if I can get better at it.

When deciding to batch paint, I ended up selecting Khorne Bezerkers, and thought I would do all the ones that were modelled with plasma pistols. I tried out a different technique on the gold, did some extreme highlighting, and tried my hand at powerweapons too.

As always, your comments are greatly appreciated.

More to come shortly.

And my first attempt at this 'lightning style' power sword (multiple pics, but only two models). Personally, whilst I do have a fair degree of improvement to make, I really like the effect!

Hi folks - no new models today, but two new pics taken by my sister (RKT), on her much better equipment, and with her much better skills . I love how these have worked out - the sorcerer has a real 'warmth' look to it that was missing in my original photos, and the powersword on the Bezerker looks like its glowing.

Just shows that quality photos can make any model look better! I shall have to commission sis to take photos of all my models

G'day folks, just figured I'd post some WIP work of the latest Terrain peice. This is very wip - the gold needs another coat or two, I havent done any real weathering yet... still loads to go. As always, comments and criticsms are welcome.

As you can see, Im very partial to the posters, and have possibly overdone it. Meh, I like how it looks, and they add a point of realism to the buildings (IMHO). Feel free to disagree however!

Gday folks - been almost a year since i did anything... thats what having a baby does! Anyway, inspired by infiltraitors IW, and Jon Sullivans recent art for BL (see http://jonsullivanart.blogspot.co.uk/?zx=e5a2456e674e8471..but) Ive decided to try and repaint some old models using my own IW scheme. First off, the heavily weathered tank I did earlier.

First off, painting yellow:

Then, masking bits off:

then, painting black:

then highlighting:

For this semifinal result:

I still need to weather this paint scheme to match the rest of the tank, but happy with how the hazard stripes worked.

Comments and criticisms always welcome.

And to close off on this tank - the final pictures after adding the weathering:

Latest WIP Tank for IW:

all went well with the yellow base and the taping. then the black went on.

Happy with the results - made an error by thinning the black out too much - went on really smooth, but was sufficiently runny enough to weep/leak under the tape in areas.

Nothing that a little touching up wont help

The stripes on the vindicator make it very intimidating. But what I love most is the wear and PERFECTLY used look of the 2 first buildings. Especially the metal used on the skirting around the base and then the pale colors from there. Not just dry brushed and forgotten. I saved those pictures for some useful reference.

I used the weathering techniques on the buildings first before really trying them out on marines or tanks. Still got the rest of the buildings to do... all in good time.

G'day folks - Been busy at home with the baby (who at just shy of 7 months old is amazingly mobile - already a proficient crawler!), so work has been limited. I have however been working on a a few chaos symbols for the WIP tank posted last week. I did my trials on paper, and followed the Dave Taylor method. Here is a link to his personal blog & the Dave Taylor tutorial: http://davetaylorminiatures.blogspot.com.au/search/label/Chaos%20Stars and a direct link to his dakkadakka Gallery (I highly recommend it for inspiration): http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/user/471-davetaylor.html

I followed his tutorial instructions pretty closely

Im actually thinking I might use something like this:

HINT - one problem with the paper I used was it was way too absorbent - made getting a clean edge and a good coverage almost impossible. I intend to do a trial on the WIP tank - Im thinking of trialing it out on the bottom of the tank to see how it looks, what colours work best etc.

At the moment, Im thinking a dark/blood Red symbols, to contrast with the silver & yellow, and match the gems/headlights I will be painting also. Thoughts & comments always appreciated (although not really expected )

Made in au
Morphing Obliterator

rAdelaide

... And here are my attempts. Note - so far I have just done the mechrite red base. i will be going over in blood red, then edging in a highlighting in a B Red & Orange mix (see the first pic which was a trial done at the bottom of the tank).

The trial worked well enough, so onto the tank itself!

(doing this posting at work, so might have repeated pics - will edit later when more time).
