These days I rarely print my own models in color. I usually build my models two or three times in black-and-white while I'm designing them. I photograph the final black-and-white design and then create the advert graphics by laying the actual textures over the photo. This way you get a view of the model that doesn't have a second-generation color tone to it. It also lets me eliminate any blurring from the photo, or unwanted shadows -- and it allows me to add shadows in such a way that better demonstrates the shapes.

I think it's the best compromise of the options I have. A print from a desktop printer will have a duller finish (easier to photograph) but the colors won't be as vibrant as the original files. A print from a laser printer will be shinier (more glare) but the colors will be rich. I've experimented with both options and settled on the hand-made graphics because it offers me more control over the final image, and saves a lot of time. Another benefit of doing the graphics this way is that it lets me demonstrate two different color schemes without having the build the model twice (or more likely for the third, fourth or fifth time).

But in any case, here are some photos of some of my models in action:

Apologies for the slightly idiotic questions Dave / Dakka but presumably these PDFs are printed onto a card / heavy duty paper from a bog-standard desktop printer and then folded / glued as appropriate?

Either way, they look bloody good!

Yeah, that's how it's done. I sell the PDFs. Customers print them on cardstock (I recommend 100# or 199gsm), cut them out, fold them up and glue them.

All very good points, but man, do those pictures look awesome! I think you should have those somewhere prominent on your site, because if I would have seen these earlier (when I had more money to spend!) I would have bought some!

I did manage to scrape up enough to pick up the sniper wall though. Like I said, I've been fairly weary of the papercraft stuff in the past, but your products are really changing my mind. They are awesome for having a set of house terrain, or extra stuff for big tournaments, since they are cheap, and fairly quick to assemble (compared to building and painting your own!)

I would really really like to see a sci fi type building however. As I stated before, that's something that's severely lacking right now. There are all sorts of ruins from every source imaginable, but almost noone does complete buildings. I personally belive that buildings are way underused in 40k, they really add another dynamic to the game IMO.

Just some ideas that I would like to see

A "light" building (Housing complex of some sort, office building, something of that nature)

A "medium" building (Something a bit more substantial, a military building, or reinforced office building)

A "hard" building (Maybe a more sci-fi looking bunker, command post, something along those lines)

I know I'd buy one of each, and know a couple of other people that would jump on the chance as well.

ETA - Also, how difficult would it be to design a building or two to be used with foamcore? I wouldn't imagine too much more work for the most part(but I could be wrong here!), just make an extra 1/8 tab with texture for all of the exposed foamcore surfaces. While they are sturdy enough for personal use, I imagine that with a foamcore interior, they would hold up much better in a store environment. I'll mess around with the idea, and let you know how it turns out. I would think it would add a couple of pages to the .PDF file, "templates" to cut out the foamcore bits, and the 1/8 tabs that I mentioned earlier.

I've just released a set of Medieval Ground Tiles, perfect for making roads and plazas. It also has some tiles for off-road sections. They're all 6" x 6" and feature an optional 1" grid overlay. In all, there are 19 different road sections, 9 different road surfaces to choose from, and some optional textures such as patchy grass and rubble.

Aramus wrote:I would really really like to see a sci fi type building

It'll happen, but I've got a lot of medieval/fantasy stuff I still want to get to. When I start on sci-fi models, it'll mean a commitment of half a year or more just to cover the basic building types, so that's a pretty big move. The good news is that my sci-fi stuff will benefit from all the tricks I've learned designing fantasy models, so they'll probably be a lot more interesting than the SF models I'm currently offering.

Aramus wrote:Also, how difficult would it be to design a building or two to be used with foamcore?

It's not too tricky. I've done a couple of models with thick walls that you can easily slip foamcore into, or leave it out. I'll probably create more models like that in the future.

That's awesome. I can't wait to see it when you start working on it. Until then I'll just be building up the generic usable stuff, and creating a set of terrain for FoW.

You can get some decent stuff at Wal Mart for less than $5. Seems to hold up fairly well for me!

My latest release is this Low Ruins Set of 30mm paper models. (You can easily scale these down for smaller gaming formats just by adjusting the print percentage. The instructions page on this product will tell you which percentage to use.)

This is a nifty set that lets you print out low ruins in 4 unique configurations, and then choose from lots of different texture options. You'll find something for just about any genre. You can quite easily print out a whole cityscape of unique-looking ruins with this one product.

Click on any of the images to visit my catalog page for more info.

Excellent addition there Dave. The ramps and elevated platforms will really help to add a nice vertical element to the table. Well done.
