Thanks guys! They turned out alright. Don't know why I had such a hard time painting them, they're tiny little things but it felt like such a chore! Love them though... so you think I'd have enjoyed painting them more... Yeah, got that old boy from a friend. Gave him a bit of a re-paint, changed the weapon & we were good to go. Love the megaphone.
Grots are one solid piece... just de-flash and paint.
Turns out I underestimated the number of grots in my unit and now have to do a quick job on 3 more. I have some of the old old plastic grots (that all look alike) & am working on quick repaints for them. Incremental progress on Mek, but he's slowly coming together. Problem is that it's only 8:30 PM and I'm already exhausted... with hours of painting to go. *sigh*
Oh well... blogging is just going to prolong the inevitable... coffee is heating... hmmm, what to put into the DVD player... "The Replacement Killers" should do the trick. Good music, lots of gun shots... pretty girl, that should keep me awake.

Yeah, not the best models unfortunately. In several the limbs kind of blur together and the jaws don't line up behind the extended arms. Maybe that's what irks me... they've got thes colorful, great dynamic little figures that aren't made particularly well. They do look good in a bunch though.
Well, I'm done for the night. Grots are finished and the big mek is good enough for now. No close-up of him yet (I'll wait 'till I'm finished) but you can pick him out in the army shot if you'd like.
Well, here we are... Boss Gitsplitta's Mob ready for the Tournament of Champions.
In brief...
Boss Gitsplitta ( PK)
Big Mek ( KFF, PK)
3 battlewagons (1 cannon or zapp gun each, big shoota, deff rolla)
20 boys, nob w/ PK
20 shoota boys, nob w/ PK
14 grots w/ runt heard
9 optomized nobs (3 PK, 3 BC & 3 combiweapons) & pain boy
7 lootas x 2
4 custom objectives
Pretty straight-forward list. Packed wagons ride like hell across the battlefield while lootas lay down covering fire. Grots wanter on late to sit on a quarter or objective (scenario depending).

3 losses, 1 win
Had a wonderful time though... got to play a bunch of my favorite people and some really nice armies.
Lootas underperformed as usual... I just kept running out of troops so I had difficulty in the multi-layerd, complex missions. Taking things into consideration though... I think I did decently with the new list. Made some headway I never had before & improved with each game. I think I will retire the lootas permanently. They just never perform at an average level and for the price I can get a full kan squadron puls wargear for the nobs. I just roll too many 1s for number of shots for them to be practical.
Took lots of photos, will put up some battle reports later after sleep.... Time to sleep.

Before I got into the battle reports, I thought I'd post of pic of the Big Mek. He's in the "late painting WIP" stage. Skin still needs a green wash, he needs some detailing... lenses, freehand orky stuff, etc as well as finishing the basing. But in general I'm pretty happy with him. Based on my playing experience yesterday, I'm very happy I did the klaw conversion. His PK really contributed in every game. Since I'd already invested a bunch of points in him and the KFF, a little extra so he could pile out join the melee' seemed to make sense, and really by the time my nobs got stuck in there really wasn't any need for the kff (battle wagon was usually destroyed by that point anyway).
For the KFF generator I just took a close look at the figure. I've seen it handled well in many different ways, but since I didn't have specific idea in mind I decided to try and suss out the original intent of the sculptor. The "coils" on the poles clearly have seams and rivets, so I assumed they were metallic. So I went with a coppery color on those. The little balls there I'm certain were intended to be light bulbs, so I painted them as such. They're just white with some Valejo "pale wash". If anyone has any ideas on how to make them look like light bulbs... I'm all ears.
For the mek proper... I kind of figgured he was a combination of a total gear-head mechanic and a blacksmith. So his clothes are supposed to be a pair of blue-jeans and a sleeveless denim shirt and a leather smith's apron. Hope you like it!

All-right... time to settle down for a battle report or so. As I mentioned earlier, didn't do so well in the win/loss category but it was my first time to the dance with anything that looked remotely close to this build, very different from anything I've fielded before. In spite of this, I had a great time, learned a lot & would gladly repeat the experience all over again or play any of my opponents again. The scenarios were very complex but fun. I'm sure for those of you seasoned 5th edition players who are comfortable with your armies & have a good command of the rules of the game, it would have been all WIN. For me, still unfamiliar with rules and my army... it was fun, but most of the subtlety of the setup was wasted on me. That's on me, not the TO. I usually could keep track of the top two things I was supposed to try to do, but after the game got going the rest just kind of got lost in the excitement of the game. (frankly I find just trying to keep some of my army alive challenging enough most of the time). The layers of objectives with several ways to earn extra battle points is just too much for my poor besotted brain to cope with. However... I fully support the idea as it makes for a very interesting and nuanced game, I just need to get better at playing so I can spend less time worrying about the rules and more time thinking about strategy. I will not write complete battle reports for each battle, though I did take enough pic's to do so... the middle two games just don't lend themselves to a good battle report in my opinion, just masses of me-lee in the middle of the field, not very interesting copy. However I will post a pic or two of each along with a quick summary. Unfortunately I don't have copies of the scenarios so I won't be able to tell you all of the things that we were supposed to be trying to do. Given what I wrote in the previous paragraph... I suppose that gives you the most accurate picture of my gaming experience anyway (i.e. I can only remember a couple of things in the list that I'm supposed to be doing in any given game). Game 1: Mech IG (Levi) My first opponent (Levi) was actually one of the guys I played in my very first tournament (it was a team tournament) after moving to Madison and getting back into 40k after a 6-year hiatus. Great guy, nicely painted army, lots of fun to play. This was my first experience playing Mech IG so I was both excited and a bit intimidated... but I had a list and a plan & was going to stick to it. The first mission was essentially a kill point mission with two objective markers. You got points for holding your opponent's objective only. DOW deployment. Turn 1: I chose not to deploy and just drove on in Turn 1. Lootas deployed on the flanks, everything in else in the battlewagons, grots in reserve. My nobs and HQ are in the blue wagon, boys in the flanking wagons. Levi brought the mechanical hoard forward. Don't think there was any shooting. Turn 2: I charge forward... having issue with the fact that all these tables were littered with terrain so there was no way I could keep my wagon block together. Found out later on that the custom locally is to count nearly all of it as just difficult terrain, but I didn't figure that out until the second game. So the wagons pile forward, grots come on (stupid grots). Lootas on left waste some shots and lootas on right continue to move forward, wagons are going full-tilt so no shooting. Levi brings is fast tank (bottom), flying thingie with the vet squad & tank forward. Levi's "death wagon" vaporizes the lootas on my left, while the flying thingie vaporizes the grots. Ignore the turn 3 title, every pic is a half-turn off from now on. Battlewagons survive thanks to template scatter and KFF. Turn 3: Wagons charge forward. (My) right wagon rams tank w/ deffrolla, I screw up rules and instead of getting d6 S-10 hits, I get a single S-8 hit. Of course, I do nothing. Levi's tanks & transports move forward, my right flank lootas die. Battlewagons survive thanks to template scatter and KFF. Turn 4: Battlewagons charge forward slamming into 3 vehicles and do nothing with their dummed-down deffrollas. I unpack all squads and kill vehicles with PKs. Several orks die in multiple explosions. Levi moves his vehicles into position to put the hurt on my now exposed units. Slugga boys at the bottom take it in the teeth, but the 4 remaining actually make their roll & stay. Other squads take losses but are largely in-tact. Turn 5: Boys pile back into their respective wagons & reverse direction to meet new threats. Lower wagons goes to claim my objective (we'd both misread the rules & thought you got points for your own objective) but the boarding plank allowed the nob to take the turret off the tank. The middle wagon only goes 6" and fires it's cannon at the Valkyrie... downing it (astoundingly) & killing one of the vets inside! For some reason the nobs don't get in their wagon (that was the plan). Don't know if I just forgot or if they failed their difficult terrain roll or I just didn't bother to move the models. Levi's vets from the downed Valk assault my battlewagon and pop it while his commander separates and makes a run at my objective to contest (he didn't make it). So we tied in kill points, neither one of us held the other's objective & I think it came down to one of the "bonus points" to tip the game in Levi's favor. Very fun game. If I'd've gotten the rules right I probably would have done better... but hey, that's on me. It was fun runnin' around in vehicles for once, I *never* get to do that. Lootas did nothing but die and give up kill points... typical. Game 2: Kult of Speed Orks (Khanaris) Got to play fellow Dakkaite and master-of-orky-conversions Khanaris & his Kult of Speed ork army. Khanaris and I were partnered up by the TO in the first tournament I played in at the Madison shop (referenced above) and we've been playing together and he's been helping me out ever since. Master craftsman, great player, beautiful army, fun to play. However when we play he just hands me my * ss every time. Tabled by turn 3 is the standard. I just have no answer for his nob bikers. So, for a battle report... I offer this photo, which pretty much sums it up. Once again, his nob bikers killed just about every unit in my army. However... in my defense... I offer the photo below. This pic was taken at the end of the game in turn 5.... yes FIVE. I not only survived to turn five, but considering what I had left I used them to get the most victory points that I could (6 pts for having a troop unit in good order in my opponent's deployment zone). So even though I was overwhelmingly beaten... I survived until the end of the game & made the most of what I had left. So from my perspective, it was a big step forward. Thanks Khanaris, fun game!

Gits I don't even play the game but I found that report easy to follow and enjoyable You really do have a knack for this.
Can't wait to see the mec all finished. Light bulbs are hard, I think I would have treated them like a jewel going from pale grey to intense white yellow with a white shine maybe? Not sure, hard to try and paint something that is technically transparant.
