Check back at WD 197- Interview with Gary Morley.

-taken directly from article-

Gary: Yeah, I'd like to remake him though. That was the first multi-part model I ever made, at least of that size, so I wasn't too dissatisfied with it overall, but I think I could do better next time.

So, he knew it wasn't great, atleast he admits that, but cut him some slack- he's the only one to have ever sculpted him and mass sold him.

Part of being an artist is dealing with criticism of your work. Part of being a company that sells artistic works (even massed produced ones) is dealing with criticism when you don't exercise proper editorial authority. There is no need to cut anyone slack- if they can't take it, they shouldn't be in this business.

That said, the terribleness of the model aside (and it is terrible), there's something I like about it. It has heart, as cheesy as that is to say. It comes from an era when GW didn't claim to be Porsches, when sculptors made models because they thought they had a good idea and wanted to make the model. It's a far cry from today's models, which often seem to have been made because some executive decided they would sell and someone who had little interest in the model was ordered to churn it out to fill a slot on the release schedule. Say what you will about Morley's design, but you can't look at the number of skulls on that thing and say he didn't make an effort. While models like Sanguinor or Astorath are technically better models, they come across to me as a lot more cynical. If someone put a gun to my head and Nagash and Astorath, I might take Nagash.

On topic: If they could make the model look like the cover art of the 3rd book in the Time of Legends Sigmar series, It would be utterly awsome!

Edit: Pic is small, check it out on Black Library sight it you want though!

I don't know. Looking closely at a bigger picture of that, it seems as though Nagash is quite taller than Sigmar.

Well, they still havent released the third Nagash book, which should be the lead up to the third Sigmar book, even though the Sigmar book is comming out first... So Im sure it will be explained in either one of the next books for either series!

Here's something I did with the Nagash model a couple of years ago. Was turning him into a demon prince for my Undead Marines but then changed direction with the theme of the army and so I stopped working on him. I will probably eventually finish him.

You've got the quote here from White Dwarf in which Morley says that maybe it could have used a little work. At that moment, he was talking through official GW channels, and was expressing himself in a very restrained way.

His statements since leaving GW, he let us in on the whole story:

Morley matched the artwork by creating a lich head for Nagash with tight rotting skin (rather a lot like the artwork we've seen here). His boss told him that it needed to be more skeletal and made him re-do the face.

They were on a deadline, and he did not have enough time to do a good job on the new face. Also, he liked the lich face he'd already done.

So, he made a sarcastic effort. He created a "Happy Clown Face" (his term) that he thought they would definitely reject and go with his original sculpt instead.

Unfortunately, his boss didn't have taste, and we ended up with the Skeleton of Chtistmas Present as our Nagash.

He's not quite THAT old. And that's part of his problem, actually. He's from 1994- so he's not an '80s mini, and he came out from GW in a time when the standards were higher (a lot higher- compare Nagash against other large models from the time, or other special characters and you'll find him to be sillier.

He's not from the era when John Blanche can go home with the intention of sculpting a few more beastmen based on rats, and come back into work with a whole line of Skaven designed (including the fluff).

No, this is a time when GW corporate told their sculptor that the face matches the artwork we provided to work with, and it should instead be more skeletal- and turn this around in less time than is reasonable. And the rebellious Morley did just that, and unfortunately, the Corporate side of GW had no taste.
