Be encouraged. It looks great. White can be difficult as you cannot lighten it. you have to start dark and work forward.

Think of it as it you can do white well, you should be good on most other colors. reguardless it is very clean and I consider that equally important in the model's presentation.

PS.. I think this is more than table top quality. Consider that most figures at my local hobby shop are splashed with paint or not painted at all.

vote me " a fan" , looking forward to see more of your work

Looks great....everything is clean and crisp.

I can't say more then what has been said....the person will really like what you have done.

Is the base going to be completed though? Its a real shame to paint a great model and not have a nice looking base to it to compliment it....unless that's what the clientele wants

Other than that....really looking forward to your next model.

He requested the base be untouched as he wanted to base it himself

In general basing is something I include as something the model requires to be finished, so I don't charge for it, but this was a special case!

Ive started on Korv, the metals on my C.Knights and my white primed model which is just a high elf metal boltgun crewman, and god it is really strange.

I've only been playing with it for an hour or two but I have learned so much. Not having black to fall back on to tidy a model forces you to think very differently.

Nice attitude towards learning and trying out techniques. I think clearly you have the talent and stamina to develop into a great painter. After technique, more artistic and stylistic qualities will surface.

Looking forward to more!

Lovely miniature!

The black and white are stunningly crisp and well defined. But it is the addition of the colors which make the miniature pop. Great job

Shrike is off at his new home and safely on display in the other realms cabinet until its time for use, so I continued with the white prime model I was waffling about before.

I made a lot of mistakes. White is very unforgiving. I would say so far about 30 minutes of paint time on this guy, and 20 more of fixing mistakes.

Badab black to darken white shadow areas was a silly idea, I know to water it a hella lot more in the future. I started the skin tone off way to dark, and the red way too light. I need to darken down the red so it can actually take a non orange/pink highlight. Metals need another highlight but Im not going to spend much more time on him bar to just get him finished, Im not going for great quality, just trying out new ways of using colour.

Other then that, I am really enjoying the white prime, and this dude will be finished shortly. While it demands you to be a lot neater, you get a much better result faster, so it is all about keeping your concentration up.

Edit: And dear god what is wrong with his finger?

It looks good....and seeing how it went for you, it was a definite learning curve for you.

White primed models is really unforgiving and forces you to do things a bit differently, for the contrast of colors does change a significant amount.

One thing I may suggest for doing white cloth is not to shadow it with washes, but to work the whole cloth the same way you would if you primed the model black. Some mistakes people do is assume you need to work backwards when doing white cloth.

For example if you wanted the recess areas to be grey...then start off with a base coat of grey and work towards the color white. It will be tricky to achieve, but the overall effect will be worth it.

Again it will be all trial and error and as you mentioned it forces you to think differently when attempting certain things.

All that matters at this point is that you are learning from this experience and enjoying every bit of it.

Keep it up

I myself tend to find that Blue-ish greys(astronomican grey/space wolf grey) work better as a basecoat to white flat areas - cloaks, robes etc but your painting attempt is quite good - washes often stain the white and its creases ruining your undertone so I'd stick to use them to darker hues. As for red mechrite red with a coat of devlan mud darkens it anf gives it so much dept- allowing you to gradually highlight with richer reds like blood red and adding a little bit of dwarf flesh to lighten it and not letting it turn into yellow or shoddy pink !

Thanks for the tips guys.

I 100% agree about not using washes to shade the whites. From what I have learned it seems you need to build up white regardless, shading it down rarely works.

I went for blood red on the reds which I instantly regretted, but as he is a speed paint test, I can go over it with scab or mecha tonight and sort it out

Something else that I have enjoyed with him is the lack of being able to blackline, something I automatically do with most models.

Not being able to do that forces you into lining with shadowing based on a darker tone of the colour you are lining, and I can see myself integrating that into all my models having done it with this one, so I am really happy that I tried this out.

Doing it hands on gives so much more experience then reading about it, for sure.

Update time

Started on Korv's skin earlier today. I like to do the entire face at the same time layer by layer.

Flesh foundation with a layer of sepia/flesh wash, then the eye picked out and mouth based.

After that it takes a dwarf flesh highlight and then a final elf flesh highlight with washes used to paint in shadow around the mechanical parts.

Teeth are astro grey brought up to skull white with devlan mud around the roots, tongue is mecha brought up to blood.

Edges are untidy, that will be sorted out as I continue

Will have shots soon of a FW greater demon of slaanesh I finished off a couple of months ago asap.

They do!

The older the Raven Guard marine, the paler the flesh, the blacker the eyes!

Still, this looks great - and I can understand not wanting the whole 'zombie looking' thing too, but at that point, keep them helmets on!

Aha! Thanks for the info. I have no concept of fluff.

Ill contact the owner and see if he wants him brought up paler, won't be that much of a problem honestly

As for the white base, its astro grey and necron abyss in a 50/50

Edit: Basically how I work on commissions is that for the likes of these showpiece standards, I sent constant WIP pics to the owner. Any of the pics I have up here would have been sent to him too. The owner of these is very very sweet and polite though, so I have to heckle him to make sure he is ok with colouring etc and to make sure he would not like anything altered! While the mentality of " You're painting it, do whatever you like!" is awesome, it's not my model afterall!

Ok cool, going to repaint the flesh.

Happy with how the tan turned out so I will keep that in mind for using on other models.

In regards to the black eyes, should it be pupil or the entire sclera? Google is being a bit contradictive.

His pupil is black at the moment, but I can make it a bit bigger to emphasise it.

lol, I like the casual throw away comment of going to Kenya...

Despite the fact the flesh needs to be pale, I just wanna say that your flesh tones are ace! Gives real illusion of flesh!

Got back late last night, wanted to try a bit of painting but man, I was so tired. It would have ended up looking like a jackson pollock.

Planning on repainting Korvs face later this morning ( I am now on night shift ) and for anyone who PM'd me, sorry for the late replies, I am getting round to them now.

I couldnt be goth if I tried, not thin enough and I love colours too much, hah

Black just lasts longer.

Kenya was indeed spiffing, though very exhausting.

I spent 4 days in Samburu and 4 in the Masai mara, in unfenced camps, meaning you had to be escorted through a jungle in the pitch dark by armed guards just to reach your tent.

I was woken up a few times by an elephant cow and her calf gently hitting my tent while munching at 4 am, and saw some amazing things

Going to be uploading the vids to youtube in the next few days and will Pm them if anyone is interested, hah. Main prio is on painting though.

It is crazy just how much I missed doing it while away!

Aaaand Korvs face is repainted.

From a colour pov I preferred the tan skin, but this is better for fluff

His whites bases have been washed now to give the blueblack recesses.

There is a dip in colouring under his nose, I will fix that up before heading to bed.

I definately don't envy the amount of work you put into the White on Shrike, but I can say the result was well worth it. That is one of, if not the most striking white dominant models I have ever seen.

First 3 layers of white down on Korv.

From what I learned from Shrike I am leaving his black armour coats untill the white is almost completely finished, as it lets me clean up any grey or washes from around the white areas.
Going a lot faster than Shrike did, despite the much higher level of detailing, I guess the experience I got from doing Shrike first was handy

Next up on the white is a wash layer, 2 more white layers, another wash, then around 2-3 more layers of white untill he glows. Lot of effort with watered layers, but worth it imo.

Also messing around with this rat lord, trying to limit myself time wise to get some speed paint practice, about 2 hours on him so far, max, which is short for me

Bad pic is murdering his highlighting, I will have a better one tomorow :( Bed beckons.
