I am beyond in love with this gallery. I am chaffing to run down to the local thrift store and buy out all the plastic war bits I can so that I can attempt some imitations.

Looks nice. I think the idea to lift it up with dirt would work nicely, for the spikes it depends.

GROT REBELZ DEFENCE LINE UPDATE
Someone suggested rather than spikes I add some barbed wire, which I thought was a great idea but I didn't have any to try it out with. But later that evening I was looking through my hobbyist tool box for some plastic tubing and with surprising convenience I found some which a friend of mine had given me years ago when he gave up the hobby. The end result is a huge improvement and really adds to the look and feel I was going for.

One of the ideas I had for the short sections of the wall were Ork Prisoners tied up to be tortured, teased and ironically used as meat shields. Both of their hands were to be secured in metal cuffs attached to the wall but as you can see they're too wide to fit on to the wall section neatly, so the other hand and waist will have to be chained to the wall. I'm still experimenting with this idea as I will have at least 1 ork prisoner featured in this defence line!

Wow Proiteus, I hadn't noticed you had started a new Grot Rebelz army !!!

Why didn't you just told me ??!?

I'll surely be following this !!

Especially love Sgt. Harker on his gunwagon, and the Medik !

The floating Weirdgrot looks great too, reminds me of the Inquisitor Possessed.... but in a weirder way

As usual with you armies, they're so full of character, they all deserve prizes by themselves...

Keep it up !!!

REBEL GROT DEFENCE LINE UPDATE: DA GATE?
When brainstorming the look of the Grot's defence line I decided to make it look like more a small fort or outpost than a simple wall or barricade. Of course an outpost needs a gate however because it is proxying a defence line it can't block line of sight. So here's are my ideas...

Da Draw Bridge
This was my original idea as a partly lowered draw bridge would not block line of sight or deny cover. I used leman russ barrels for the posts and Valkyrie parts for the fences, only downside to this design is the fact I can't effectively attach the draw bridge section to the posts so it would have to be mounted on a sanded plasticard base.

Eavy Armored Drawbridge
Ditching the converted posts for some Aegis defence line parts, this is easier as I only need to create a plasticard base to go between the two sections which I can then glue the draw bridge to.
I'm still experimenting with what to place on the small sections, ork prisoners or just some armour plates.

Da Gate
Reversed the original posts make a great gate thou a little low I can add barbed wire or something to the top of it. Course I can add some wall sections to either side to extend it to the correct length.

A Big Mesh Gate
I just stumbled on this idea while googling ork forts; it's a great idea by sandwiching wire mesh between two sheets of plasticard I can create a large gate with the Grot Rebel Star on. This won't block line of sight but will look the part, maybe difficult to pull of thou?

Let us know what you think to these Gate concepts?

They all look good! But if I had to rate them, drawbridge, a gate, a big mesh gate and then fortified drawbridge - though I suspect your version of a big mesh gate might rate it higher (ie second).

REBEL GROT DEFENCE LINE UPDATE: DA SHORT BITZ
Been working on a few ideas for the short sections of the defence line rather than simply converting the standard parts, and here they are...

Grot Watch Tower
Not bad little kit bash using 1 Ammo Crate, a set of Manticore ramps (which were going to be used for the killy stage's supports) and some Baneblade plates. I'm glad that I have a use for my comm gretchin as I doubt I'll be using my command chimera and he's a great model.

Da Killy Stage
Originally this was just going to be a raised platform but then I decided it was a great way to incorporate Ork Prisoners into the defence line, put'em on stage to be shot at with signs saying “shoot ere”! Still unsure how to chain him up without using the “metal mittens” as ork arm poses are restricted, so I'd be grateful for any suggestions regarding that?

Eavy Cover
Another idea I had for a short section was using the shoulder pad from an Ork Stompa as it's curved plates would be ideal for corners and the ends of the defence line. Course had to cut the bit of the bottom so it wasn't too tall and file the sides down a bit.

So what do you think? I might ditch the Killy Stage for another watch tower section?

PAINTIN DA WALL?
With the wall complete so it's time to decide on a scheme, so I threw together a few colour schemes in photoshop. Will suggested a rusted wall with red detailing like walls 4 and 5.
Personally I'm probably going to go with No 1 or 2 that way the battle damage and scars will be more visible, just need to make sure that the red isn't too strong. What do you think red or dark metal poles? I've got a pair of leftover walls to experiment on this week so will see how it goes.

FORT GROTX
Well my Grot Rebelz defence line is pretty much completed just need that 2nd stompa shoulder pad for the 4th short piece. Since the Orks tied up on a raised platform looked out of place I instead went with a metal section with a mounted banner I might also add some trophies from my closest victories later down the line. Note that the barbed wire will be attached with greenstuff and plasticard tubing when the wall is fully painted.

I'm going to start painting it tomorrow using the wall 2 paint scheme as it will be easier to add battle damage too, of course I plan to give it a good amount of weathering effects.

GRETCHIN SNIPERS
In addition to the veteran squad led by Sgt Harker my Rebel Grotz Kill Team also features 3 Ratling Snipers, so here are the Rebel Grot snipers better know as the “Rifle Runtz”
The problem was only one of the plastic grots had the look of a sniper so since I only needed 3 I decided to attempt to make them look different from each other.

With all the big critters in 40k these days I'm likely to convert more snipers in the far future.

BAD NEWS BOSS; DA WARBANDS DEYS CHANGIN!
Given this project's completion target is Throne Of Skulls in March I was greatly troubled by the rumor that the guard codex would be coming out that month, especially given that GW events demand you use the codex after it's launch like the space marines back in September and if so I'll have 1 or 2 weeks to update the army especially since White Dwarf will have barely any info.

A few changes will be manageable as I can invest spare points into the allied nob bikers, but the big problem is the veteran squads as they are a main part of the army as such I'm worried about them being used as Elites again leaving my army with no troops. It something I would expect as GW would be able to sell more guard squad sets if Infantry Platoons were the only decent troops choice. Course I've been watching BOLS for new info and recently this came up...

BOLS Guard Rumor Thread wrote:Moving on from the veteran weapon squads re-boxing, it is believed that they will be changing their position on the battlefield. With smaller squad sizes, veterans seem to be taking a fire support role, that focuses on battlefield specialisation.

While I love the idea of specialization which is what my warbands are all about, the smaller squad sizes (likely 5 man) are a deal breaker and given how veterans in the previous codex were small fire support units like the grot vets shown below it could happen!

WOT DA DO!?!
As you can imagine this is really making me reluctant to continue work on my guard infantry as some of it could wind up as wasted effort when the time comes.

MORE ORKS OR TEK
The other option is to focus on more allied units, maybe a few enslaved ork shoota boys in a battlewagon. Or I can do project Waaagh Krusha which was a Tau force with allied guard attachment with 3 Grot Mechas representing Riptides. Someone recently suggested I expand on the Warbot conversion and create the Grot Kommitee in battlesuits for a Farsight Bomb which was tempting.

GO UNARMED!
Basically I would keep 3 of the veterans in the next two squads unarmed, that way I can give them special weapons if they're veterans or lasguns if they are a basic infantry squad. But if veterans are going to be 5 - 6 man squads perhaps it would be best to save the big brutes for that role and keep my main squads consisting of mainly troops and grunts and save the big muscled brutes for these rumored small fire support veterans squads.

I'd be grateful to hear you thoughts on this matter?

I saw those IG rumors on BoLS too. I do like the idea of your troopa-grunt-brute sizes, but I'm not sure I trust too many BoLS rumors. They don't have the best track record. Wouldn't the average IG player want more than 5 guys to suck up lost wounds?

I'd love to see how you represent tau with the grots. I think it's a great idea to use the brutes for the armless guard. You could still have a troops or two in the vet squads, tho, to keep them looking less uniform.

That defense wall is fantastic. I really like the idea of the stage, but I can see the issues with it too. Have you tried putting them in front of a curtain of sorts? Say… paint a big target on the gargant shoulder pad and shackle an ork to it… maybe you could use the fully extended pistol arms and have the ork tied at the wrist with the "chains" going back over the wall. Like the grots throw him over. I love the radio tower too.

I like how your snipers are turning out, but don't forget you can extend those barrels too. The kroot barrel looks pretty sweet on that guy.

DA WALL'Z GOIN UP BOSS!
The defence line is coming on nicely just need to wait for the 2nd stompa shoulder pad to arrive. In the end I went for the red paint scheme as it contrasts the checked pattern very well and ties it's to the rest of the army. The watchtower hut was a bit of a pain and went from being red on the sides and bronze at the front to black, also the hanging fabric didn't look too good so that's on the back now.

Will be adding the desert sand weathering effects when the full wall is complete, might add a scorched mark or two to the plates on the watchtower, looks too clean.

BOOM BLASTAS INCOMIN!
Due to some last minute changes to my Kill Team I need a 2nd squad of veterans as sadly Harker isn't worth the 55pt price tag when his 'Catachan Devils' rule isn't in effect. So here is the 2nd Grot Rebel Warband; The Boom Blastaz cause they'll always been greenskins who love blowing stuff up.

I'm glad I came up with the warband idea as it proving enjoyable to give each grot unique at this rate no gretchin will look the same (unless I start making platoons).

DA DEATHSKULLS AV LOOTED ME WALL!
The defence line has been put aside so I can get the 'Boom Blastaz' ready for the Kill Team tourney next month. However that has been another problem I ordered a 2nd Ork Stompa shoulder pad so I can have one at each end of the defence line but in was lost in the post, worst it was the last one!
I did consider replacing the draw bridge with another section of the wall given how cool they look and creating a smaller entrance for the 4th small section.
But since I brought the battlefield bits sprue I had a tank trap left so I decided to convert that into a wall section which fits in quite nicely making the defence line only 5mm short of the standard 72cm length. Now I need to decide on two things 1st; The spikes are going to be dark metal so what colour to paint the plates in between? 2nd; Should I add a squig flap?

I only sold the infantry, I still have the tanks that will be improved later on in the project. The reason I got rid of the old infantry was simple, I had already repainted them once when I redid the army for the current codex therefore a 3rd paint job would greatly lessen the model's original details. There was also the fact I wanted to give the army a new less uniform appearance to make them look more like a rebellion and less like a red Imperial Guard army with gretchin instead of humies.

Also I don't like having unused models, if they're going to simply be stored away with no possible use in the future I'd rather sell them so someone who will use them. The money I got from selling the old models greatly help me stock up on bits to make the new ones, speaking of which I'm still looking to get rid of 2 of my 5 Doom-Vee chimeras as I'm unlikely to field all 5 again if anyone is interested: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/536541.page

DA FORT NEEDZ A TOWER!
A few weeks ago I showed a cool Ork Quad gun conversion built mostly from Plasticard that I planned to recreate for my Grot Rebelz defence line. However when it comes to working with plasticard I've never been too comfortable, so I decided to play to my strengths and find components that would work well together to create a similar structure. The main part being the main gun plates from the 'Stormlord' baneblade variant with some Leman Russ sponsons on the side and the glass dome turret from the ork bommer on top.

I'll convert the guns to be autocannons and fill in the gaps as well as give it a more battle damage and greenskin appearance. But while it looks fantastic and is exactly what I was going for I'm worried about it gamewise; Do the sponsons make it too bulky?

As you can see when placed next to an standard quad gun the turret and sponsons tend to make it bigger, the last thing I want is to be accused of converting for advantage purposes. Cover shouldn't really be an issue when it comes to quad gun placement, but if it did I can always draw line of sight from the star instead of the turrets plus not intentionally hide anything behind the tower itself.

Might have to remove it from the stand and mount it on a 40mm square base, but then it doesn't look right behind the defence line. What do you think both as hobbyists and gamers?

Honestly? I think it's lookin' fine just the way it's going - though some rotator cuffs between the sponsons and the tower would be nice, so that one could at least IMAGINE the guns elevating.

GROT BASE BUILDIN 101
Da Quad Gun: Well I've completed the final and central part of my defence line, the quad gun. Now because I was going with a more fort/outpost like appearance instead of a defensive Wall I wanted to make the quad gun look more like an actual building (from a gretchin's perspective). I was then inspired but this awesome Ork Quad Gun conversion, however I don't have those kind of plasticard skills so I played to my strengths and found the best bits to build one instead. I found the parts from the Stormlord's cannon and leman russ' sponsons wenT together perfectly.

The biggest pain was getting the plasticard the right shape to go underneath the top turret. Also I was originally going to add the tips of the autocannon barrels to end of the guns but felt that made the guns appear too long in contrast to the tower.
There are still some finishing touches to be made such as green stuffing the gaps on the sponsons and adding steps to get to the door on the side but all and all it's a great centre piece for the defence line.

Da Shield/Power Generator: I ordered a few bitz online to try different conversion ideas for the quad gun tower, one of which was the large Stormsword cannon. But when the other design worked out I decided to turn it into an greenskin like generator to use as the objective that I'll placed behind the defence line. I then added the tesla coils with the top one being removable and it became a shield generator, I then added a large on/off switch for laughs.

AGENT SPOOKUMZ IS COMIN!
Nearly all of the 18 man Kill Team is ready for next saturday's Kill Team tournament, all I need now is to update and repaint Agent Spookums to represent a squad leader. That way he can lead them to victory by hiding at the back and out of sight like a ninja, seriously there no way a guard veteran squad sergeant will kill anything and he's worth 2pts if killed.
