I'll probably grab a couple of these this week. Which issues are the best/most pertinent to miniature/painters hobbyists? (as opposed to larger scales, etc).

ON SALE NOW: £1

In this issue we have some brilliant articles for miniature painters of all types and levels. Starting us off is a fantastic Insight interview with the daddy of the hobby; none other than Sheperd Paine! We also have lots of excellent product reviews and a closer look at some of the Chipping Medium that’s on the market. Three massive tutorials which include another step-by-step from Sergey “WE7” Chasnyk and something pretty special from Isaac Jaramillo Sama who show us how to paint Pegaso’s Vlad Dracul!
This, on top of all the other stuff makes for one big issue...116 pages in all!

Is there an index of the tutorials?
I had a look on the site, but couldn't find out what has been covered in the previous issues.
If I know whether an issue is going to have something I can use, I'd probably buy it, but unboxing and interviews aren't something I usually read.

Yeah, I did think that. Nice website, etc, and I might have missed it.
I'll prob grab a random issue anyway.

The articles each month concerning tools and specialty items like weathering products are worth the $1.73 every single time. Also the issues are gradually increasing in size and page count which is quite nice. Issue 12 was quite nice.

I really like the tutorials too. I keep buying hobby stuff with all these dreams about paint schemes, dioramas, and tiny sculpture I plan to make in the future, but considering I don't have the space or time to do much with it, at least these magazines keep me dreaming.

Still, I'd rather buy one or two issues that are likely to be of most interest to me than take a shot in the dark. After all, if I really like the first couple I buy, I'll get them all. If I don't, then I'll probably never buy one again. So for that reason alone some kind of index is probably a useful thing. My unanswered question at the top of the page resulted in me not having bought any issues - and "just buy it anyway, tightarse" isn't really the same as an actual useful answer.

I'd try issue 6 - there's an interview with Kev White, I recall an in-depth look at a shockingly expensive 'Painting Buddha' set, and more. By that point the magazine had found more of a footing too:

Without you being a bit more specific about what you'd want, it's a hard question to answer. We have articles that cover all skill levels and scales in each issue. It doesn't really matter what type of miniature you paint or what scale; we all use the same tools and techniques so I'm pretty sure you'll find something of use and every issue (I'm not trying the hard sell, I honestly believe that).

By the way I love this feed back and I will take it on board. I'm not sure exactly how an index would work logistically, but I'll certainly put more details into the magazine descriptions in the future. Also FPM is coming up to is first Birthday, so when issue 13 is released I plan on bundling up the first 12 issues and selling them as a reduced rate.

Well, given that we're posting on what is generally a sci-fi/40k and fantasy-themed board, stuff generally along those lines. More specifically, I'm aware that many of your issues have a focus on kits of differing scales, busts, etc. While I'm completely aware that many/most techniques cross those boundaries, I prefer to start off with issues that have a higher proportion of 28mm models, and especially those i can relate to and have a connection with.

I mean, I also play some historicals, and I buy WGI on occasion, so I'm not exactly "40k or gtfo!" but "pick any one, they're all great." isn't the most useful, if you see my point.

I look for articles or how-tos on types of things.
Like, I am painting an Imperial Guard army, and need to know how to paint flesh and faces on 28mm heroic models. Anything around the same scale is good enough, and it's techniques and tricks I look for more than "here's how to paint Imperial Guard".
The same with cloth. Cloaks on my models are very basic, and look like a sheet of plastic thrown over the shoulders. Ways to blend, or get a cloth-like texture would be great.
Again for viewing ports or headlights

The trouble is that we can't tell from the cover how many articles there are in an issue, just the highlighted ones.
So, if there was an index, I would snap up any issue that listed articles that would help.

Ok, to try and explain how hard an index would be. Issue 12. We had 2 big tutorials (plus several other in other guises) The fist big tutorial was from WE7 (Sergey Chasnyk) who painted a space marine but it also explained a bit about NMM, Space Marine Armour, Painting chipped armour and Air brushing. The second big Tutorial was By Isaac Jaramillo Sama, who is painting Pegso's Vladd Dracul, but he showed how to paint horses, Raw Metallics and embroidered cloth patterns.

Like I said this isn't a hard sell but each issue does offer a lot more than one specific thing

As to the cover. I tend not to put too much text on it because I like to show off miniatures from the featured artist who's the focus of the insight interview.

If you guys are on facebook then check out the FPM page, it has loads of links tutorials that have been posted online. Also feel free to friend me personally, I'm always available to help with specific painting issues

Easy fix: Do you have a contents page for each issue? If so, put a copy of that on each issue's purchase page as a large-enough-to-read image. (larger then the current images). Voila! Problem solved!

I've been painting for more than 20 years. So I'm pretty comfortable with my ability. I'm no longer interested in competition-level painting, and I'm not really trying to learn any specifics, at the moment, either. Not to say I don't like learning new things, but whenever that happens, I can google any technique or effect and get a bunch of tutorials and youtube tutorials showing me how to do it.

I'd approach the tutorial elements of the magazine more like I do something like Finescale modeller. If something catches my eye or interest, I might try it.

Mostly, though. I'd be reading it as something to read that might inspire me.

^ That....

With a good one-line summary of the article, we can probably infer what is involved in the process.
It's usually enough to make a sale, or 12.

This is our birthday issue and we have something pretty special to celebrate this – a superb insight interview with one of my all-time favourite sculptors and painters Alfonso Giraldes. That’s not all – Alfonso has also written us an amazing tutorial about how he painted the subject of our cover, the Abyssal Warlord for scale 75! Considering this is our birthday issue, we haven’t stopped there. Polish paint studio Awaken Realms have also written us a tutorial on how they painted their recent piece “Lord of Change”.

We also have all of our usual articles, including a great “What’s on the Market” and reviews of miniatures from Sergeant BlackArt, Draconia and Romain Van den Bogaert’s as well as Hangar 18 Miniatures photo backdrops and Minitaire Paints from Badger Air-Brush Co. where 2 people will also have the chance of winning a set of 12 paints.

Just thought I'd give this thread a free bump to say thanks, as I entered the competition to win a set of Minitaire paints in a recent issue, and was lucky enough to win!

Received them today, having been notified late last week, and got the set (out of the two) I wanted, so I'm a happy bunny, and everyone who hasn't tried an issue for a measly £1 should give it a go!

Yeah, I got the ghost tints, I'm quite well catered for with regard to pretty much anything else, but I really fancied having a play with these, had almost added to cart on a couple of occasions, but, with a limited gaming budget, the prospect of £35 on paint in one go when there are so many models out there un bought kept putting me off, and I could never decide on which I wanted if I went for a few.

Problem solved!
