Over the river, through the woods

been a while since i've updated this, or even worked on the project. with the weather as crappy as it's been recently, even if i had wanted to paint, conditions were not conducive to doing so...but i think there's still a month left in the contest, so maybe i can finish. not really knowing what to do with the SBLR is killing me. i keep working on other things--the squiggoth and now grot tanks--trying to get the creative juices flowing, but it seems like all those juices are not overflowing to this project.

will make a concerted effort to do SOMETHING on this project tonight.

@Stormwall - it's going to be a looted Leman Russ. I'm not 100% satisfied with the way it turned out, but i can't just sit on it...will add more details and rivets later, but i wanted to get a base coat down to make myself feel as if i've accomplished something on the project.

Over the river, through the woods

it's been a hectic couple of weeks. i will have WIP pics up tonight of entry 2.0....don't know if i will have it finished tonight, but i am at about 95%, just lacking some small detail work.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
WIP pics, as promised.

base beginnings:
Spoiler:
base is made with .080 (i think--it's thick enough that i couldn't cut it with scissors and ended up using tin snips instead) plasticard. 7" in diameter. then a pie tin placed upside down and smashed in the center with a jar to form the crater. (took 3 pie tins to get what i wanted, but i got a pack of 4 for $1 at dollar tree, and i can still use the other 3). hot-glued the pie tin to the base.

using joint compound (drywall 'mud'), i covered the pie tin, trying to give a grittier texture to the metal, filling in gaps, etc. in hindsight, i should have sprayed the pie tin and base with some primer before i put the joint compound on.

i then used some mixed basing material (fine sand and tiny rocks--which actually is terrarium fill i got for $1 at a thrift store) and added some detail while the joint compound was still moderately wet.

the bomb:
Spoiler:
i got some easter eggs at dollar tree (had wanted them a while ago, for the junk pile contest, but oh, well). after finally finding a tube that was almost the right size, i went to work adding details--panels, rivets, and scoring some panel lines into the body.

primed, with tail added:

Painting:
Spoiler:
didn't get as many WIP of the painting process as i wanted. but i remember what i did:
1. primer: flat black spray paint
2. random airbrushing of a dark brown, covering 75% or so of the entire piece.
3. added more rocks (made from little bits of styrofoam) around the nose of the bomb to build up the point of impact.
4.primer (with brush) the new rocks).
5. drybrush 4 times, each time using a lighter shade of brown.
6. 4 coats of matte clear acrylic spray.
7. the bomb was painted after the base. simple brush base, and drybrushing for details.
8. used some eye shadow (cheap makeup, once again from dollar tree) as a budget version of weathering powder.
9. did one wash on the bomb to this point. will do at least one more wash, and maybe 3 or 4 more.

size comparison and detail shots:
Spoiler:

as always, comments/constructive criticism welcome, and thanks for taking a look.

Great paint job.... great idea..... great execution! Really like this! Just goes to show.... you don't have to go mad with loads and loads of elements to produce a really effective and story filled piece! Good luck with the comp buddy!

Nice job indeed!

Crater looks great, and some lovely work on the bomb Leaking goo from the bomb is a nice touch.

Over the river, through the woods

@MagosBiff90 - thank you. was considering playing fallout 3 or new vegas a few weekends ago, as i haven't fired up my xbox in almost a year...was thinking about the bomb in Megaton and decided to give that a whack. turned out better than i had anticipated, being a rush job and all, but i am very pleased with the outcome. wanted to have craters for scatter terrain anyway, and i have been trying to keep everything i make usable in a game (if i ever get to play it)...craters are supposed to replace blown up vehicles in gameplay, so i figured this was good practice.

@monkeytroll - thank you. the goo was actually my girlfriend's idea. it could have been done better, with liquid effects or even PVA glue and then painted, but i wanted to finish quickly, as i knew i was up against the deadline. it's funny, but now that i have a budget for my hobbies, i am even more frugal than ever, it seems. i just LIKE making most things more than buying them outright; even though i could spend money and buy everything GW, i was poor or barely making ends meet for most of my life, and that tends to pound frugality into you. i realize that a lot of people don't have expendable income--i remember when i didn't, as it wasn't all that long ago--and if anyone wanted to try something inspired by something i have done, this way it's pretty easy for them to find the actual components instead of having to try to find a low-budget version.

Don't worry, you made a fantastic piece ( almost 2) it was a tough theme, not many people attempted to make something let alone finish one piece let alone 2.

for what it's worth you came 4th on my points table.

Over the river, through the woods

@Stormwall - the "goo" on the piece i did is just paint. blobs of 3 different shades of green (including 1 metallic) and a yellow, then worked with a toothpick. it is a hell of a lot easier on a smooth surface, so the floor of the crater was a real pain.

@Noodles - no worries. i started the crater piece because i KNEW i could finish it...just hit a brick wall with the tank. then during the contest, i won an auction on ebay in which i got everything except the main hull and turret for a leman russ (and an IG heavy weapons team) still on the sprue for $6 (including shipping! ). 4th is about where i figured i would end up (was really hoping for 3rd, though). not sure i liked the poll for voting for people's choice (as soon as there was a clear leader, that lead grew exponentially and i imagine it's because people opened the page, saw that Dr. H was in the lead, opened the spoiler for his project, and then voted for it--i could be wrong, though), but i can see that it helped bring attention to the contest.

Over the river, through the woods

a little slow on the upswing, thanks to the NHL playoffs being here (and the Rangers being in them again).

round 14 is open; link LoER 14

Ordinary objects. decided to use these:

unaltered object is the plastic lid from an order of Wendy's Ghost Fries (still wet from washing).
altered object is a piece of pool hose.
light kit runs on 2 AA batteries, and is from Dollar Tree (could also count as an unaltered item...).

WIP:
Spoiler:

hot glued lights onto a bamboo skewer in a tight cluster to fit in the tube. didn't want sharp points of light, more of an ambient glow, and this does it pretty well.

plastic latch-hook mesh (aka granny grate) for a deck to be under the plasma 'coil', and to hide the Wendy's branding on the lid. have also spray painted the inside of the lid black.

added foam to the underside to help give some rigidity. will have to hollow out a place for the battery pack and fill the rest with foam so it sits flat on the base, which will probably be made from MDF.

rough basic assembly. leaving 'coil' separate so i can airbrush it, and will then attach to the rest of the piece.

test of lighting. i have another section (hell, i have 25 more feet) of the pool hose, so i will spray some of that, stuff some different lights in it, and check to make sure the lighting effect does what i want it to do.

back to it...3 hours until the girlfriend gets home!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Spoiler:

one end. will have to sort out some kind of tubing to go in the indention. may also do some fine wire work a la Dr. H in the last contest.

the other end. didn't really like the look of this, so i boxed it out:

to look like this.

overall shot of progress so far. need to clean the superglue off of my fingertips before my lady gets home, so that's it for now, but more later tonight.

@youidiotkid - thanks, man...as for on the table pics: no, i don't. sadly, i've never actually played the game. i'd like to, but i work 55 hours a week, and i seem to start a lot of things but never finish anything except for the LoER contests... i have probably 25,000 points of orks to be assembled/painted/repainted, and half that in space marines+IG+chaos+tau....good at collecting. not so good at getting anything done with it, or so it would seem. found out today that i didn't get the job i was willing to take a pay cut for (to have more time for things, i.e., hobbies)...

as mentioned on the contest thread, some WIP photos:

first attempt at the plasma generator effect paintjob. it sucked.

decided i needed better paint. so i got

it turned out a bit better.

The plasma generator is looking pretty sharp. The bronze contrasts very nicely with the blue coils, and those bits of pipework are a solid touch. I have one question, though: where is the inordinate amount of rivets?

@ Youidiotkid - rivets will come towards the end, just before i start the weathering effects.

@Magos - thanks for the compliments...and yeah, the sprues are really useful. they are round, for the most part, not rectilinear like GW's...pretty much perfect for pipes. and no worries - i wish you well on your contest entry too...just not so much well-wishing that you beat me. got any paint on your project yet?

also a general call for feedback: i have been thinking about adding some panelling/plating/supports to the plasma generator sides, something like this:

any ideas?

Definitely glad I checked out your thread. Love seeing the thought process you've gone through. I'm not good at wiping the slate and starting with a fresh idea, so get in a two and eight and the final piece is not as good as it could be. Your tank for the last contest was cool and I loved the bomb crater. The WIP for the crater was really interesting. I had no idea it was a foil container, I thought it was moulded.

@TP - thanks, man! i got the idea for the bomb crater somewhere online (terraingenesis?)...the thing i hate about plaster (or drywall joint compound, which is what i used) is that it is not very durable, and even just moving it a few times after painting i've noticed a few little chips. but it does look pretty awesome, even with very little experience working with it.

i may still do something with the tank from the last contest...tried some weathering on it, and it looks a little better. may take it off it's base and use it as a playable, looted vehicle for my orks...

Well the crater was brilliant to my eye. I'm in agreement about plaster being difficult, finding that with mine at the moment.

The tank was so much work it would be good to give it a second life.
