Space Wolves don't need allies anymore, their main weakness had been anti-air, but their new fliers cover that pretty well. It's just that an Imperial Knight makes literally any list better. So you don't need it, but allies are always useful.

But in your example you had a whole army from another codex to play along side with you. Or do you play team tournaments like PP dual lists tournaments, where only one gets played. Otherwise am confused.

if he plays alongside people and thats when the tablings happen it kind of implies that space wolves do need allies.

I wish the space wolves had a way to give a unit a better fnp(other than biomancy) , everything would be a bit better

There is a nice build with Dark Angels allies:

Take a Librarian LVL2 psyker, PFG, Bike, Axe and a Ravenwing command squad:
- apothecary
- ravenwing banner (4d6 auto hit&run)
- ravenwing granade launcher

Now attach 2 iron priests - each on a TWC with 4 cyberwolves, one lvl2 rune priest on a bike (with hood). Last , but not least - add 2-3 WGBL on TWC, with SS+PF. Each WGBL should have 2 fenrissian wolves attached.

Out of the box You get 12" Scout, Auto Hit&Run (4d6!), 5+fnp. Quite powerful deathstar.

If you roll for telepathy and get Invisibility - your deathstar is OP. Yet, enfable and granade launcher is cool combo as well. And if You roll Endurance on Your Biomancy rune priest - You have a FNP 4+ eternal warrior unit.
What is even more cool - majority save in your unit is 4+ - so GravGuns will not hurt You that much.

And yes , allies make units OP

To be competitive Space Wolves do need allies, but usually it is better when the wolves are the allie themselves. All they really bring is the ability to bring un-dedicated drop pods, which cents can be put in.

Space wolves definitely need allies, either IK or tigurius and grav cents in a pod.
