Haha Poor Sgt Ballisticus, he was only doing his job

Anyways, I've done some work on the Slaaneshi sergeant of the first CSM squad, an Emperor's Children marine. This was a lot more difficult than I expected, the dreaded pink driving me slightly mad. I haven't based him yet, as I'm still debating whether or not I'm going to add pink or black flames on some of his armour panels (as the Emperor's Children like to do that for some reason). Here are some pics of the pink maniac:

The paintjob's a bit rough around the edges, but I think it works well enough. I still have a lot to learn about painting pink though, but that'll have to wait until the next Slaaneshi marine

As always, let me know what you think, and thanks for stopping by!

Did you paint pink on top of black primer? because that makes you a candidate for the medal of suicide courage second class (first class is for painting yellow)

looks good, but I'm not a fan of their post-heresy colors, why couldn't they keep their old purple and gold?

I'd say that looks pretty good, speaking as a fan of Slaanesh myself I can't really fault the pink - though I like mine purple so I really couldn't pass judgement. Perhaps building up from white is the thing to do? Or maybe use layers of red and then finally arrive at pink? See, purple is so much easier! As for flames, if you think you're up to them (and I would suggest that you are, given your works as presented here) then I would certainly give it a go! Don't do flames in isolation though, always make sure they start at the base of an armourplate (e.g. a leg greave) rather than have flames suddenly appearing in the middle of large armour plates. Other than that, go wild! Really loving the whole concept and execution of the warband here, terrific!

Good one !
But since you did really nice flames on the Nurgle termie, you could definitely try some on that one, if Slaanesh demands it...
If I had to choose I'd go with pink flames on the black parts, as your pink already pops nicely on its own...

Thanks everyone! Sorry for the extremely late reply, but I've been visiting Italy the past few days, more specifically the lovely city of Milan

I did not manage to escape the Dark Gods completely though, as Milan actually has an official GW store, which led to a small detour...

GIFTS! GIFTS FOR CHAOS!

Ahem. So anyway, I picked up a box of Cultists and Obliterators there, as well as a Horus Heresy novel named Deathfire (Salamanders! Wooh!). The Obliterators will probably see the most conversion work, mostly head swaps and maybe some arm swaps, depending on how well the Chaos Terminator arms scale up to the Obliterators massive bulk. The Cultist models look to be more of a challenge, as they're pretty detailed models to begin with, and they're partially push-fit, which makes converting the lot more difficult. The main idea I have for them is that they're an Alpha Legion-trained infiltration squad (or maybe part of a cult, Cult of the Hidden Serpent sounds pretty cool), tagging along with the Alpha Legionnaire of the second Tac squad.

Now, to answer to some of your replies...

aldo wrote:Did you paint pink on top of black primer? because that makes you a candidate for the medal of suicide courage second class (first class is for painting yellow)

- Lord Creed, I bring terrible news!

- What is it, Corporal? Has the Chaos horde breached the outer defence lines? Has the Chaos fleet managed to break through our blockade? Speak, Corporal!

- It's worse sir. It's Private Tyrius... he's... Emperor, save us....

- He's what, Corporal? Has he turned to the Ruinous Powers? Has he sabotaged our generators? By the Emperor, tell me already!

- He's painted pink sir.... on black primer.

The command room falls silent, as the words drift in the air. All officers and crewmen look to Creed in stunned silence.

Lord Castellan Creed, Defender of Cadia, slowly takes his cigar out of his mouth and stares at the tactical displays in front of him.

- Send out the Medal of Suicide Courage Second Class to his next of kin. And tell them... I'm sorry.

...so, which of you Chaos warbands has a yellow colour scheme? I like me some medals!

I agree on the colour scheme though, it's a damn shame they switched to pink and black. If I'd ever get my hands on some Forgeworld stuff, I'd definitely try to get one of those Phoenix Terminators

Matthew wrote:One thing that you could do with a future Khornate, would be to paint him in flames EVERYWHERE

Not a bad idea, actually! I'll have to dig through the Lexicanum to see if there isn't a warband with a colour scheme like that

Fifty wrote:This looks like an incredibly fun project. How big do you see the warband getting?

That's a good question, actually. I haven't really set a limit for myself in terms of size, only that I definitely wanted an army big enough to actually play the game with (if I ever get around to learning how to play the game ).

At the moment, I'm a bit conflicted about what I'm going to add to the warband next. My birthday's coming up soon, so I certainly have the opportunity to get some delicious new toys to play with. But I'm not sure if it's the best idea to buy a completely 'new' kit, as I'd probably feel obliged to use everything that's in the box, rather than mixing in the random bits I have lying around.

For example, let's say I buy myself a box of Khorne Berzerkers. Lovely kit, awesome weapons, what's not to love? But what am I going to do? Make them all standard Berzerkers with pistol and chainaxes, or do I throw in a few spare bolters? Do I swap out a few chest pieces for variety, or do I use the Khorne ones for unit coherency? I have the same problems with the Raptors and Plague Marines kits, I just don't want to end up with generic marines anyone could have put together.

There's a couple of things that are definitely taking shape on the horizon though; I've got plans to scratchbuild a light assault tank (which will count as a Rhino) and a Defiler (albeit a small one), I have an old Land Speeder I need to find some use for and I've got my Obliterators and Cultists to convert, so I think I have enough work to keep me busy for the moment

Also, a new box of Chaos Terminators is definitely at the top of my wish-list, as I've really enjoyed painting the other squad. Other than that, I'm open to suggestions, really

On a side note, I've also been thinking of making a sort of mini-index of the colour schemes I've painted, with short tutorials on what colours I used and in what order, so people can use them as a starting point to create an army of one of the lesser known warbands, without having to go through as much trial and error in getting the colour scheme right

That's all I have for now, thanks for stopping by, and if you have some suggestions for future additions to the warband, let me know!

Love the story

Hell yeah cultists ! I think that even unconverted, they have an insanely high level of coolness compared to how discardable they are. I mean they'll probably get chainsawed by a passing by havoc if he thinks he will get a steadier weapon stand using the corpse.

Regarding the Berzerker kit I would not worry about it being overkhornified, Back in the days I seem to recall buying at least one kit to assemble standard chaos marines with melee weapons. Regarding Icons on torsos, belt buckles or knees, you can easily "shave" them with a knife and get a nice area for freehand. And regarding heads you can also remove the bunny ears and if needed replace them with horns. I think the only part that would be hard to unkhornify would be the spaulder with a big khorne icon on it, but that part is worth saving for actual followers of the blood god.

I found some more time to work on The Remnants, I finally finished the Emperor's Children Sergeant

Behold his glorious pinkness!

I can tell you one thing, painting flames isn't easy; painting pink ones is even worse It worked out in the end though, although I may have lost some of my sanity doing so...
Some of you might also spot the black flames on his right leg, which also took a while to get right, especially since I couldn't really reach that part of the armour all too well. But I succeeded, with patience and one steady hand!

In other Chaos-related news, I built a little Alpha Legion Operative Cell (an ALOC?), which goes by the name of the Cult of the Hidden Serpent (even though they aren't cultists, and the cult itself doesn't actually exist). Here's some pictures and info on the group's members:

Operative 'Snake'. He's an old grumpy sergeant. Occasionally has strange hallucinations about otacons, metal gears and someone called Liquid. Currently in charge of the cell.
I only did some minor (although very tedious) conversion work on his model, I just raised his pistol arm so it looks more like he's shooting someone

Operative 'Scarecrow'. A marksman with hellish accuracy and a foul mood. He knows things are only going to get worse for him, and he's totally right. Usually hangs back with the Chef to provide covering fire and other support roles. Gets itchy around bats.

Again, only some small adjustments to the base model, I just gave him a rifle scope and a bullet belt on his back.

Operative 'Bolt'. Hailing from the Death World of Catachan, he's an excellent tracker and jungle fighter, often sent out in front of the cell's operations for recon. His nickname stems from his affinity with machinery, although some say he got it from that time he killed someone with an used bolter shell. But that's just a rumour (we hope).

'Bolt' got himself a backpack and an auspex, to set him apart as the squad's tracker. I'm painting him at the moment, I'll have some pics up soon

Operative 'Pyro'. Heavy weapons specialist and slightly mad individual. He tends to over-do it a bit with the flamethrower, which is why they usually send him in first (they still have burn marks from the last time 'Pyro' went last). Overall, a fun guy to be around.

This one was more heavily converted; I chopped off his right arm and replaced it and the other arm with some spare Cadian ones. Cutting off the arm was a bit tricky, but once the arm's out of the picture, you can pretty much slap on whatever Cadian arms you have, which is pretty neat. If I ever start a Renegade IG army, I think I'll get a bunch of this model

Operative 'Madz'. He's mad. Really, really mad. Mad enough to charge at enemy firing positions with nothing more than an improvised bat. More frightening is the fact that he manages to survive those insane charges each and every time. 'Snake' keeps him around for good luck, and because the guy makes for the best stories.

This guy got 'Pyro's' arms, as I felt that they fitted him better. He even has a crazy mask and a running pose, so why he didn't have a close combat weapon in the first place is beyond me. I had to chop the arms up a bit to have them fit, but it was the converting went pretty smoothly. I'll have to fill that gap in his chest though, damn these push-fit models...

Operative 'Chef'. Once a vox operator, he was demoted to service in the cantina for 'accidentally' sending an artillery strike on a forward position which just happened to be where the platoon's commissar was fighting. The Alpha Legion reinstated him back into his old function, although he's decided to keep his old uniform for nostalgia's sake.
DON'T EVER EAT ANYTHING HE HAS MADE, TOUCHED, OR BREATHED IN THE SAME ROOM AS. IT WILL KILL YOU.

This guy wasn't actually included in the box, as he's originally from the Dark Vengeance boxed set. I found him in one of my bits bags, where he sat for a while as I didn't have a unit to accompany him. Now that he's got some buddies, I saw fit to convert him a bit. I chopped off his arms (I'm starting to sense a theme here) and stuck a vox transmitter on his back, so he's now the unit's comms officer. Again, I'll have to fill that unsightly gap in his chest, but that's about it conversion-wise

So that's about it for now, I've started painting 'Bolt' as a test model for the others already, so expect to see that in the near future

As always, comments and suggestions are always welcome, and thanks for stopping by

So my birthday's arrived, and the Dark Powers have granted me some gifts....

BWAHAHAAHAHAHA! YES, YES! BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD! HAHAAAHAHAHAAHAH!

Ahem.

Right, so I've got a box of Khorne Berzerkers and Chaos Terminators, which is bloody (hah!) awesome

Now my plan for the Berzerkers may cause Khorne a bit of rage, as the plan is to turn 5 of the crazed Khornates into Raptors, which would leave me with 7(!) Berzerkers (for those who don't know, 7 is the sacred number of Nurgle - oops)

Alternatively, I have two old metal Raptors in my possession (although one's flying base is sadly broken), so I could turn just 3 of the Berzerkers into Raptors (12 - 3 = 9; favorite number of... Tzeentch. Feth. *sound of horrific disembowelment by angry Bloodthirsters*)

Okay, I still have to figure out what I'm going to do with them, all I know is that I want at least one Raptor with a chainaxe, because BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!

Now, in other news, I apparently forgot to show you the Obliterator I've been experimenting on last time, so here he is:

As these guys are supposedly Terminators-turned-Obliterators, I figured it'd make more sense if they actually looked a bit like Terminators. So I swapped his head out for a spare Terminator one, swapped one of his hands and added some spare spikes on his back. The arm's bothering me a bit though, as it's just so small compared to the rest of the body, which probably won't be helped by the massive shoulder pad that will cover it. On the other hand, it could be explained by the randomness of the Obliterator virus, which should allow such variations to exist...

I've also painted one of my (not-) Cultists in the mean time, namely Operative 'Bolt':

(I made the pictures a bit bigger so you don't have to zoom in that much to see the actual model)

One downside to zoomed pictures is that you start seeing all the little mistakes you didn't see before... guess I'll have to touch him up here and there

I tried some new things here, mainly the blue-greenish colour of his scarf, and the red edging on the red parts. The Alpha Legion is known for their blue-green colour scheme, so I figured that their operatives (or diversion, who knows) would wear a similar colour. I used Hawk Turquoise with a green wash over it to get to this colour, which works reasonably well in my opinion. What do you guys think? Alpha Legion-y enough?

And lastly, I'd picked up a WHFB Chaos Sorcerer recently, and he just seemed perfect for converting into a renegade psyker for The Remnants Here's how he looks at the moment:

I used various bits from my bits box to flesh him out a bit, including a sidearm, a scroll on his belt and an evil book he uses to summon daemons with. Oh, and I did a head-swap, as I found this lovely Ghoul head that looked more appropriate for this evil sorcerer

That's all I have for you now, comments and suggestions are always welcome, and thanks for stopping by!

I love that goul head on the sorcerer, he looks twisted, corrupted, and having a pretty good time unleashing the powers of the warp on people.
That operative is looking good too, hopefully his mates will join in soon ^^ !
Oh and, for the Obliterator if you are concerned about the right arm looking too small, how about adding a third arm behind it, or a weapon being morphed ? On another hand, an asymetrical design can completely suit an obliterator.

A third arm would certainly be cool, I'll see how far I get with the current set-up first though

Anyways, I got a little update for you guys, I finished another Marine from the first squad, namely the Thousand Son:

Brought along by the Sorcerer, this Rubric Marine has seen service in the Reclaimed as the personal bodyguard for the squad's sergeant. Considering how much attempts on his life the Emperor's Child has lived through, one could say the Rubric is pretty damn good at his job.

Emperor's Child: Fight harder you fools! If I have to spend another second on this god-forsaken backwater planet, I'll have you clean and polish my armour until it shines again like it did before you dropped us into a GOD-DAMNED SWAMP!

Thousand Son: *internally screaming*

I had some problems with this one, I made the mistake of using a couple of pre-painted arms, who didn't appreciate being re-primed all that much. So the shoulder pads look a bit messed up, but apart from that, I enjoyed painting this guy

I've also put together some Raptors with Khorne Berzerker bits and some scenic bases I got in one of my bits bags. Here's what they look like so far:

I'm still experimenting with weapon set-ups and poses, I'm really liking the Berzerker kit (despite the fact that it hasn't aged that well), and I've primed a couple of miniatures to paint in the coming days. So keep an eye out for updates, I'd say

That's all I have for now, thanks for stopping by!

Well, you have to play with the cards you were dealt, so considering the original layers of paint I think it turned out well, you paints were thin enough not to add thickness to the model. Besides that is a clean job on the helmet lines and that tabar works really well (it is from a loyalist kit right ? I do not remember seeing that one on the thousand son models...).
Now maybe you, or someone passing by, will tell me that I am full of and that this is poor advice, but would not "adding paint" fix "the too much paint on the shoulder" problem ? I am not thinking one more layer, but some freehand that I know you can do, to distract the viewer from the "paint artifacts" (they are, imho, now visible because of that flat area on the shoulder).
Well, that is just me theorizing and I am definitely not a genius painter, so take this remark for the not much that this is worth. That model is already a proper automated killing machine right now.

These Raptors are looking good too, do you plan on keeping on merging difference allegiance inside the squad ? I know there is this whole raptor cult, but on another hand if you are the cultist responsible for the jump packs and if a berserk asks for one to get in the killing zone more quickly, you do not have a choice do you ? Also asking because there still are some Khorne icons on two of them. Flying berserks, we're all f*cked now.

I've been thinking of a solution as well, but most of the problem stems from what happened when I'd primed the model; namely, when I checked to see if it had dried already, I noticed the shoulders being grainy and thick, the details almost completely obscured by the thick black goop. Strangely, the primer came right off when I touched it, so I scratched parts of it away until the details were more or less visible again. However, part of the original paintjob had come off as well, which lead to the paint artifacts on the shoulders.

Adding some freehand is definitely an option, maybe I'll stick a Tzeentch icon on one shoulder and a Thousand Sons one on the other (if I have the guts to try and paint those, that is)

Oh, and the tabard is from Anvil Industries by the way, I have a few of them lying around, and figured it'd fit well with the Thousand Sons' aesthetic

The Raptors are probably going to end up being a mix of Night Lords and Khornates, but I'll see if I can throw in a servant of the other gods in as well

Also, BERZERKERNADO. It's like Sharknado, only with more chainaxes!

Thank you Levi! I wish I knew where those bases came from, so I could buy some more of them for the rest of the army

I've also got another update for you guys, which consists of two fully finished miniatures: one grumpy Iron Warrior and one sneaky Alpha Legion cultist

First up is Operative 'Bolt', who finally received his basing:

And here's Iron Warrior Zhoran, tank hunter extraordinaire and general badass:

Zhoran was one of the few Iron Warriors rescued from a dying planet, where they had been locked in combat with their own Grand Company. They had been part of a mutiny which aimed to remove their commander, a Warsmith who had become possessed by a Daemon, from his station. Unfortunately, the mad Warsmith managed to gather the support of most of the Company, which led to the mutineers getting hunted down by their former comrades. Zhoran was found while he was busy eliminating his pursuers' vehicles with his Lascannon, with which he racked up an impressive kill streak. When offered induction into The Remnants, he told the operatives he still had a 'loose end' he needed to take care of, after which he took off to parts unknown.

What happened next is unclear; it is only certain that he was exfiltrated with the strike team. Reports indicate the Iron Warriors Grand Company falling into disarray and infighting after the tragic demise of their commander, who was apparently murdered from incredibly far by an unseen assassin.

When asked, Zhoran never confirms or denies having anything to do with it, he merely grins at the mere suggestion.

Now, he serves as tank hunter and occasional sniper, providing his squad with heavy firepower.

I had a blast painting this guy, the Iron Warriors are really growing on me, both fluff- and tabletopwise The only things that gave me trouble were getting the right shade of iron and painting those damned hazard stripes. Seriously, how the hell are you supposed to keep a line straight on a round surface?!

I also deviated a tiny bit from the established colour scheme, as the Iron Warriors usually have red eyes instead of the blue ones I gave him. It just seemed like a better fit with the cold, calculating nature the Legion is known for; and it also allowed me to make the blue a bit of a spot colour on the helmet and on his weapon I also did a rather small attempt at OSL on the gun, I'm not sure if it's that visible in the pics, but it's there alright

One other tiny thing I changed from the original set-up was his right shoulder pad, which I swapped with one with a skull icon from the Berzerkers kit. It looks similar enough to the IW's icon, in my opinion

That's all I have for now, comments and criticisms are always welcome, and thanks for stopping by

Thank you!

Also, I know coherency is a bit of an issue, it's mostly done by the basing at the moment. Painting one shoulder is something I've considered, but I'd only do it if I had a good icon for the warband, which is another thing I'm having trouble with...

Thank you! It took a while to get them painted, especially on such a small surface; good to see it paid off in the end

Tactical_Spam: Ezra is fighting reality right now.

War Kitten: Vanden, you just taunted the Dank Lord Ezra. Prepare for seven years of fighting reality...

Nice hazard stripes! They can be a real pain in the to paint, but they turned out straighter than a bunch of my tests went! The bezerker shoulder painted up as an iron face is a cool touch and I think it works pretty well!

I'm loving seeing this warband come together!

Cheers!
