Can't speak to KoW, but WM/H has a very tight rules set but gets super-repetitive after a while.

I kept finding that, by the time I actually got good at a given set, I'd also gotten somewhat bored with how they ran. Also, I mostly saw the most basic "kill enemy commander" and its variants played easily 9/10 games, which got extremely repetitive across the game.

If you don't get bored, WM/H is very solid, but I do, so rarely play it any more.

I left GW for KOW. Great rules, free, easy enough to play with my 11 year old nephews. It is a very elegant versatile list. I am doing Lord of the Rings in 1/72 using the KOW rules...check out the thread http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/633915.page

That's one of the strengths of Malifaux. It's hard to have the same game twice. It keeps things fresh.

You have to play the steamroller missions, changes the whole game. I hate playing games of kill the caster and agree it gets boring.

Agreed, Valhallan- sometimes it's a little much, but it's a really strong system... then again, it's a huge part of the game's entire structure, unlike most.

Chute, I expect I'd agree, but the 3 metas in 2 states I played were, umm, conservative, so I never saw much variety. I guess I assumed it was the norm. Maybe it isn't.

I always play the steamroller missions against my opponent. I even recommend we use a death clock for added fun. You should try it. Death clock Speeds the game up and changes everything.

WMH can get a bit monodimensional if you always play the same opponents even if you play steamroller.
The death clock is fun but some players are simply not fast enough.

Chute, fair enough. Next time I actually get a WM game in, I'll try that... minus the death clock- yeah, as wuestenfux said, I'm one of those players: can do stuff with a deadline well enough, but tell me I've got an hour to do something and it isn't happening well.

Also try some of the different league play where you build up your hero. The shop I attend has a league every other month and it's a ton of fun. You can find it on the PP website under orginnized play.. Here is the link. http://privateerpress.com/organized-play/leagues

Both Malifaux and Infinity have great scenario play that really change up the game.
Some of the scenarios in PP's "No Quarter" are quite fun, I just wish more players took advantage of them. (But they are there and they're awesome!)

Also, check out my history blog: Minimum Wage Historian, a fun place to check out history that often falls between the couch cushions.

Well, I'd argue that Malifaux's scenarios are most of the point, but yeah, the system adds great variety, and I've enjoyed Infinity.

I am another disheartened ex-GW customer. I won't be buying anything else from them after 20 odd years as a committed customer. I don't really want to get into their company strategy, financials or how good or bad AoS is.

What I really want is advice from people who have tried alternatives. I have looked carefully into WMH and like what i see, but haven't really looked at Kings of War which looks like a similar game to fantasy, some would say completely copied from fantasy in terms of the armies, imagery etc! The rules look interesting as well.

So I want to hear from people that actually play these games please.

Cheers.

The other alternative is to go back and play the edition that appeals to you.

Both of your choices have their flaws, and in current company, they have the same issues that GW does, but haven't lost their common sense to Pee on their consumers shoes, yet.

an easy out though is Warmahordes.
Warmahordes of the two is the better of the two options, and lesser of two weevils.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Yeah, I've felt alienated from PP, but find can be defensive jerks and they've got the same aggressive fanboy thing that competitive games often have, rather than being the raging... whatevers... that GW is.

Nutters. I think the GW word is nutters.
