The Rhino's stripped, but still needs plenty of tidying up.
I'm waiting for a supply drop from China with a load of LEDs and other such goodies. Once I've got those (and learnt how to use them!) I can decide what I'm going to light up. Need to do that and make any holes, fixings etc before priming him. So this is at the back of the painting pile for now.

Second half of my assault squad.
And the whole squad together.
(I've also been working on getting better pics, so I hope these look better than my previous ones. Still working on getting the lighting right, but I'm much happier with the setup I have now) Automatically Appended Next Post: Next on my workbench - I've got a new Tac squad that have been primed for a while now. But I've also just primed my RT Tac squad and one of my Dev squads (with both sergeants, because they're ready but the rest of the Devs aren't). These are just before priming.
But I also want to work on my RT Rhino now my LED stuff has arrived. Decisions, decisions...

Had to take my rhino apart to drill holes and run wires for the LEDs. It's now going to have to be primed before assembly (so I don't prime the LEDs!)
I'll give you an update once it's primed and assembled. The lights should work then!

What a brilliant project!
Great to see these old sculpts getting some TLC
You should get some orks painted up and then play 'battle on the farm' from the old Rogue Trader book.
Looking forward to seeing the Rhino with the lights installed!

My bro has most (possibly all) of the original monopose 'Space Orks' box from the RT days too. I remember playing battle on the farm against them back when I started - about 1991. I'll have to get him to send me a pic (although he's out of the country at the moment). I'll post it if I get one from him.

I know right?.
I love watching people 'fix up' their old tyme RT era figgies. I had most of them, I wish I never sold them all those years ago.
Since they cost a arm and a leg, and I got a 30k army on the go ( so moneys tight), I get the next best thing I get to watch someone else give them all the time, love and commitment that they deserve.
Battle at the farm sounds fantastic, make it so Whittlesey! I would love to see pics of that

Got the Rhino primed, so assembly should start at some point this weekend. That'll include wiring him up. It's my first stab at anything electrical/electronic, but I've had it all working on a breadboard - should be fine!!

I was a PITA but the Rhino is all wired up.
LEDs glued into the back and wired up:
All the lights' wires hanging out the bottom, and they'll get wired onto the small PCB with a battery holder:
All wired up.
I've since fitted a switch to the PCB, then glued the whole thing to the hatch. The hatch is magnetised, so the whole thing is hidden away behind the hatch on the bottom of the tank. I can pop open the hatch and flick the switch to get the lights on, or take the battery out. Automatically Appended Next Post: A photo with the lights on once it gets dark...

Thanks Nevelon! I'm looking forward to getting it painted up and trying to get some decent photos of the lights working. Automatically Appended Next Post: Here are a couple of shots of it with the lights on. Not great quality photos, but hopefully shows the effect pretty well.

Finished!
This is how I access the on/off switch and the battery - it's all on a small circuit board stuck to the hatch on the bottom, which is magnetised for easy(-ish!) removal.
Just waiting for nightfall so I can take a pic with the lights in the dark. Automatically Appended Next Post: Pretty grainy, but you get the idea.

Thanks Azazelx - it was a bit of a pain to get it wired up. Probably not going to do it for many other vehicles - although I do have plans for lighting up some terrain pieces one day...
I was asked to do a tutorial for it, so if you're interested you can find it here - http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/697347.page
Next up is my tactical squad, Not oldhammer I'm afraid. Still some work to be done, but getting there -

Thanks Az. That guy's head is magnetised so he can be helmeted for a 10 man squad, or a helmetless serge for two 5 man squads. I'm really pleased with how his head's come out. I'll do some better shots once finished.
The men are now complete except for some highlights. But I left the guns too late and now they need doing and are all fiddly! :( But shouldn't be much longer...

Working on my 1st ed Devs now -
Posted some details ages ago, but...
The Serge is a regular monopose guy from the late '80s - I'm taking the thing in his hand to be a signum.
Most of the rest of the squad are from the RT era Dev box set (circa '92), one with an old RTB01 missile launcher and one with a new missile launcher from the current Tac squad box.

I love the rhino tank, and if you don't mind I am stealing the antenna idea. I mostly lurked but, I commented to just say those devastators are superb.

Thanks Stormwall.
I was really pleased with the antenna. Not sure what it is - it's from my scale model bits box, which is mostly 1:25 scale cars, but I have a feeling the antenna is an HT lead or similar from a 1:8 scale bike (long since departed). It's kind of plastic/rubber and flexible (which is how it works so well bent over like that). The small strap holding it down is actually the little stringy bit of plastic you get on clothes tags. Nice and small, but easier to work with than string or thread.
I really like the old Dev sculpts. Metal is definitely harder to work with - I don't think it's the material itself, but more that the definition of detail isn't as sharp on metal. Really noticeable when I was painting the one with the new plastic missile launcher. I could tell the difference from one brush stroke on metal to the next on plastic!

Not oldhammery, but this is what I'm working on currently for my Starks.
Vanguard Vets WIP.
I found I really liked the silver/gold/black when painting some of my other Starks, before I got onto the red. So I decided my 1st company would have less red and more gold. I like how they're going so far.
Predator WIP.
Not looking much at the moment, but it's only base coats. It's fully magnetised - see more here!
Once these are done I'm going back to hardcore oldhammer - not sure what will be next, but I've got an RT land speeder, some regular metal marines that I'm going to make into Sternguard, a couple of metal bikes (to which I'll be adding some modern plastic ones), some metal terminators and an original RT Land Raider. That still needs the old paint stripping and some work to fix it up.

Not posted here for a while. RL has taken priority for the last month or so.
My Vanguard Vets have had a little more work done on the basecoats, but neither them nor the pred has really made progress. Currently I'm working on my Rogue Trader Land Raider instead!
As with loads of the stuff I've been working on, this is a few decades old and looked like crap! This was a little worse than some of the others as it had 'battle damage' created by me (with a hammer and matches ).
This is how it started -
So first step was to strip the paint -
And next was to fix up the damaged track. I decided to leave all the other damage. This tank's supposed to be a few thousand years old, so will have a few scrapes! But the track needed to be fixed so it would look like it could at least move! I basically just had to remake that front corner of the tank from plasticard.
So now we're ready for the primer! There's a lot of battle damage. There's also a lot of messy gluing, pieces that don't quite fit etc, but it's too well glued to take apart and try to fix, so I'll just have to make sure it all looks like it's intentional
I'm probably going to be working on this until it's done, whilst working on the Vets when I need a break. I'll get back to the Pred once one of the others is complete.

Land Raider finished!
I'd never airbrushed before doing the base coat on this. Still need some practice, but I think it turned out fine for a base coat.
I'd also never used weathering pigments before. I think the end result looks okay, but I learned a lot along the way. Mostly that this stuff will always end up rubbing off, no matter what you do! So maybe next time I'll go a little lighter for a model I intend to use in games!!
Anyway, here he is:

After them we'll get back to some old metal
